What year is your XR? Great bikes! Be safe out there and practice in open areas devoid of vehicles.

It is 1994. Yes, it is a great bike, very simple and reliable. Of course, play it safe :)

Awesome to hear from another 2002. What a bike! How long have you had it? I still have a lot of learning to do before being skilled enough to make a video, but I'll certainly put that on the list of vids to make. Thanks for leaving a comment and remember to be wheelie safe out there.

Gustavo Valdez learn to cover your rear brake. Before you learn to pop wheelies. Best advice.

"All the gear , All the time ". So smart. Only times I really hurt myself are the days I forget a gear.

RaNdoM- -ThoUghTs gear is cumbersome and takes time to put on, so I understand the lure of riding without. When I was 17 and began riding it was tank tops and shorts and even a 3/4 helmet, and the wind felt so good on my body. That’s the one thing I miss. Now with full leather gear and boots, the only wind I feel is through the perforations. Knowing that I can ride as hard as I want, and that I won’t have to feel pain if I crash is enough to sacrifice that feeling of wind. I think. Cheers and peace.

How old are you now ? And a few hours of wind euphoria , is not worth a life time of injury . I've split my shin down to bone twice the days I didn't wear motocross boots. You think you'll be fine. And life plays cards. The thing with riding is you could wear sneakers expecting a safe street ride. But unexpected find a new trail , on a beautiful day. Next thing you know your in mud in sneakers. Hey John! Yeah, I'm hoping to master the technique of long slow wheelies eventually. Instead of starting in 2nd and going into 3rd I'll try to stay in second and practice with the rear brake. Have you perfected the art yourself?

Hi, i wish! Never got it right. Key indeed is to get comfortable with the rear brake. I always hit it way too hard.

I have a similar issue. I'm hoping my foot eventually sensitizes to the pedal. Take it easy, John.

you make good videos, i have watched many videos of your channel! but on this i can say you will fall bad. especially when you continue shifting without clutch. please for you and your bike: learn how to use the rear brake before you are going further to the balance point. once you can control the rear brake and drive about 300-500 meters in the balance point you can take on the shifting with clutch. its much safer to do it this way. learning the rear brake is very easy. just pop some wheelies and immediatly press the brake pedal. i can promise that you won't press the brake pedal when you are in the balance point, i can say this from my own experience! it will take 4-6 months (depends how fast you can learn), than you will be a balance point master! greets from a fan! :)

Hi Tomah4wk! Thanks for your comment about my wheelie practice, and you're SO right. A few weeks ago I was riding a wheelie and accidentally shifted into third and almost went over backward, so lately I have been keeping my left foot away from the shifter and paying more attention to keeping a slow wheelie in second while learning brake control. I was shifting into third because it is nice to carry a wheelie out in that gear, but my brake control is terrible so eventually it would have ended badly. I will take your advice and try to learn balance point before gaining to much speed through the gears. My goal has always been to learn slow and controlled wheelies, so its great to get advice from someone that knows more about wheelies than I. I appreciate the time you took to help me out. Also, I do always use the clutch when shifting, but it might be difficult to tell in my videos because they are 30fps. I'll update with a better video once I get my technique down. Big Thanks! And please ride safe and take it easy out there.

thanks that you accept my opinion! i knew that feeling to carry the bike a longer distance, but i had to find out that this hurts really much twice. one time you hurt yourself and second time you hurt your bike, these feelings aren't that nice. so it's good that you changed your mind! but it probably would be best to learn the foot brake directly. i dont really spend "much" time on doing comments to help people out like you. it honests me when you answer my comment. i just want to help people, and this time is good investet i think! this could be, i just thought that you shift without. anyway, if you need tips for shifting or anything else just contact me! i like it to see progress from people when they can use tips from me. no problem! anyway you also ride safe! (edit: if you have facebook or so you can add me if you want more detailed tips) greets!

This is great that you like to help people. It's wonderful that you sacrifice your precious time to share expertise and most likely prevent me from having an accident. I'm sorry to hear that you looped your bike at one point, but thankful that you can pass on your knowledge to us beginners. My problem is that I don't practice often enough due to school, but I will get out there this weekend and make sure the rear brake mastery is my focus. That's really cool of you to share tips and go above and beyond to help a stranger. I really do appreciate it. I also want to help other people out, and will eventually be a teacher (of biology). If I can get good enough at wheelies then I also want to make an instructional video and I will include your tips and give you a shoutout in the video (if I ever get to that point of skill). I might try to add you on facebook. I usually only add people that I've hung out with and know personally, but your help and care makes me want to be a friend. Chat with you later. And many thanks. My bike, body, and gear will thank you every time I do a wheelie and don't crash. If I get the rear brake down, I will post another video for you to constructively criticize. All the best and take care!

that is what i want, if i can help people being hurt by themselves (it sounds a bit weird i know) i will give them tips. i've not even one time looped my bike, but if we add us in facebook or so i can tell you the mistakes that can happen during wheelies. i know this problem, but practice makes you better, it just might take longer, but it helps alot to practice the brake! i can think that you want to help people, otherwise you wouldn't take videos of taking an engine apart on youtube, right? it's great to hear that nowadays people want to be a teacher, i appreciate that! if you really want to do good wheelies, you can do it. because if you see success in wheelies it goes automaticly faster and it's more and more interesting. doing wheelies is very versatile if you once control the balance point with the real brake, i promise! i've never got shoutout, this would be great! it really honests me. i know this, i also don't add people i don't know, but in this case it's an exception. are you in a propper facebook group like in one of the xr650l groups? i would be happy if you would do such a video! have a nice weekend and ride safe!
