The mom in the episode actually stood up for the daughter when she found out who the father really was. She even said she didn’t care about the show and she would testify. She did this without speaking to her husband at all. Seemed unrealistic to me.

This is why child abuse is so rampant and often ignored. The abusers look for situations where they have power and control over victims and the family/friends will either look the other way or won't believe anything is happening because they trust the abuser. People often think abusers are like some guy in a bush who pops out to grab kids. The vast, VAST majority are the people who are the most trusted in the child's life. Family, friends of family, and religious leaders.

I grew up in a Christian church. This was in the 70s. I never realized untill years later that it was abusive. My mom was really into it. We had really long church services so almost all of Sunday was at the church and 5 hrs on Wednesday. This church did alot of casting out of demons from people and this would take hrs of a prayer circle. Any thing was a demon like migraine headaches, disobedience, being a teenager ect. I was like 7 at the time. The pastor would preach that you should give everything to the church. People even sold property and such. My mom always gave alot. This church imploded by 1979 but untill she died she would go without and not pay her bills to give to the church on t.v we had to take her checking account away later in life. I have come to realize I have trauma from all this. When the 8 passenger stuff came out it brought back the memories.. I still believe in god but not religion. God doesn't need my house or all my money. The pastor doesn't need a 5 million dollar house.

Sometimes the hardest part of being a fundamental Baptist kid at the time whose parents weren't "No pants, no TV, homeschool is the way" levels of crazy was seeing fellow teenage girls trapped in this type of environment with a controlling Dad or church leader (or both combined in one!) and wanting to somehow show them reality but being powerless because you're only fourteen. Fortunately, in the case of girls I saw most controlled, they began finding ways to stand up to the dad. They wound up being able to wear some makeup (although one who didn't marry until we were in our 30s because of Dad's controllingness got kicked out of the family Airbnb the morning of the wedding for too much makeup, and I was so proud of her). One girl refused to court the much older man who had first asked about dating her when she was a teenager. Their only son wound up marrying a girl who wore pants and wasn't as strict, but that "scandalously" ended in divorce because he'd picked up some of his dad's controlling tendencies. As far as I know, none of them were sexually abused, but who knows? If they were, would they have been able to tell us? After all, my family had to hide certain typically innocuous movies and items when this family came over so they wouldn't be "offended." Today, I would walk right up to that man wearing a pair of pants and a face full of makeup and, if I had enough warning, painted nails. I have no idea what I'd say to him, but the general demeanor would be that I no longer allow men like you who have no place to have authority over me to dictate my life, even in your presence. I have every respect for Christian women who choose to wear skirts or avoid makeup or jewelry; I work alongside them every day. The Bible makes it quite clear each one of us has self-determination in how we live holy lives, including in matters of food, dress, and entertainment, as long as we can do it with a right heart. However, the "right heart" is why I cannot respect anyone who seeks to control others' relationships with God by dictating their food intake, the clothes on their backs, or the entertainment they enjoy. We are to live free, not in bondage.

Since everyone is bringing up the Purity ball-those were initiated by Randy Wilson, who IS a director of the FRC. So little shifts like that are deliberate on the part of the writers in a two-fold way: 1) avoiding a lawsuit (ie, these stories are inspired by headlines but we’ve changed enough that no one can empirically declare they are based on real people); and 2) making connections between similar groups. These variations from the “real story” are deliberate, not sloppy.

My only issue with this episode was that they didn't differentiate enough the duggers religion (borderline cultish) and Christianity as a whole. I remember this episode made a lot of people turn on Christian's and look at them in a bad light. I wish the differentiated it more, like I'm Christian, we never had a purity ball or anything like that. Even with the duggers most people would just know then as Christian so when all the stuff came out about josh...people couldn't separate the two in their head. Don't get me wrong, I loved the duggers, and even now, they do still value more conservative values, but when it comes to crimes, not everything can be fixed with prayer. God didn't always just fix things. Sometimes you need the cold hard truth and punishment for what you did. They did NOT handle it well.

TW: Discussion of SA & gay conversion therapy. I've been watching SVU since I was a kid, they have a lot of "ripped from the headlines" episodes and several episodes on religious cults and religious abuse. I remember one of their episodes from a few years ago (season 18 episode 19 "Conversion") had to do with a teen girl who was on a trip to NY with her church group and one of the boys in the church group ends up raping her (though he didn't think that's what he did) because their youth pastor told him to in order to "save her soul" cause the teen girl is a lesbian. So the rape was their version of conversion therapy to make her straight. 🤢🤮 I don't think that particular episode was a "ripped from the headlines" one, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if this kind of thing actual happens in abusive religious groups/cults. And the fact that they tried to make it seem like the rape was a good thing that "god" approved of is even more 🚩🚩🚩Seriously, how are these people allowed to be free and have so much power? 🤨
