Hello! @Doberman Planet First - I am a recent subscriber and I love all of your videos! Not only is your content great and informative, but the way you deliver it is engaging and obviously well thought out/planned. I also love that you give us links to more information! While I currently don’t have a Doberman, I am planning on getting one when I know I can provide the best lifestyle/environment. When that time comes I’ll definitely be relying on these videos and your website! Second - From this video It seems as if they are more health risks than benefits involved with neutering but it’s still done to avoid more aggressive behaviors. Some people in the comments below mentioned that it’s better for the dog to not do it at all, especially if someone is a more experienced owner and has more control over their dog. From a physiological standpoint this makes sense especially since hormones are used for many processes in the body even after the majority of growth is done. But at the same time the environment the dog is in is also a big factor. For example, you have your young kids to worry about. Lastly - You mentioned in the video you post earlier today that Arlo is only 15 weeks old so you still have lots of time to decide, but I’m wondering if you’re considering not neutering him? Your obviously very experienced and could probably deal well with any behavior differences that you might see. (But then again this wouldn’t just affect you but also your family and also the dogs Arlo interacts with.) I’d be very curious to see how many behavioral differences you experience.

I really wish I had this channel when I got my two dobermans. While it is good to listen to your vet, a vet that barely passes veterinarian school is still a veterinarian. I had both a female and a male, brother and sister. My male passed due to bone cancer at 7 years of age and my female had incontinence since she was neutered. We had to give her prion her entire life and she still leaked quite often. I was finally able to find a qualified vet, whom knew dobermans and her advice was exactly the same as yours. Females, neuter close to 2 years and by a professional not a college student and males just don’t neuter due to the increase of problems. I didn’t know anything about this and having been a member of Doberman rescue out of MN the amount of males that suffer from bone cancer is truly alarming. It can take a dog in as little as 3 weeks like mine. If I were to ever share advice on dobermans and Rottweiler is if you have a male just don’t neuter, it’s not worth the risk of bone cancer. My next doberman, I will not fix regardless of male or female. Thanks again for all your research! I stumbled on your channel as I’ve been itching to get another dobe.

I think this needs to be mitigated by some practical issues also for some owners. My dog goes to daycare (outdoor, on acreage) and non desexed dogs aren't allowed. Some also find it tricky having a male / female pair not desexed - and not wanting to breed. It's certainly not a black and white issue. I'd like to see more large number studies doe on the benefits / risks, and on various sized dogs.

I was thinking the question should be why not when? I think a male doberman should only be neutered if it’s a serious health problem not because of aggressive or protective behaviour because that’s what Doberman’s were breed for, my female Doberman who lived to 15 wasn’t done and when she was 10 her womb got infected so because it was a serious health problem it got removed to save her life , so I’m saying that I personally think you should only do them things if it’s absolutely necessary, thanks again for the great content I watch all your videos and learn a lot for when I get a chance to have another Doberman one day

I'd very much like to know your thoughts as to what Doberman Planet asked as well please! I have an 11 month old working line, Euro bred boy I got for Search and Rescue. My first dobie and first working dog. EVERYONE recommended to NOT neuter until at least 18 months, even 24, if at all. This list includes a retired vet who leads our SAR group, a local trainer that works with working dogs for both protection and SAR, and a retired K-9 police woman who is part of our SAR group, plus my last vet who has hunting dogs that he actually hunts. So far Argo is just a big goober for the most part. However, I did just get a 3 1/2 month old dobie/lab mix as a companion animal and I do have concerns about them as they grow up... They are great pals so far! This is also the first time in my life I've had more than 1 dog at once.

@@DobermanPlanet Same sex aggression is common at least in EU lines, but most have no problem with working/walking with other males. I would never let them play with other males to (especially other dobies) as the risk is to big. I'm guessing that it's a side effect when breeding for protectiondogs (dogs that never should back down from a fight and have a short temper) and there has never been a reason for the breed to get along with other dogs (like bc or retrievers needs for work). As Americans lines seem to have less aggression and courage overall mb the problem is less? We dont have many american dobies here so..

Thank you very much for your videos. We made the decision to get a Doberman based on your informative channel. In regards to neutering, it seems to me that the only reason to do it is for behavioral reasons. But if you care about your dog, you'll wait until it's about two years old. By then, the behaviors would've become habits and neutering won't do much to change them. So neutering at that time will not bring the desired benefits...

Interesting topic considering I'm waiting for my newly adopted red Doberman to get neutered at the shelter. He's 3 years old or so. They said sometime this week and can't give specifics. I'm going crazy not knowing when I can take him home. I visited him today though. He said he was ready to come home. There's also the psychological aspect of not neutering. I've heard of intact males going nuts in their homes when females in the neighborhood were in heat. All those hormones and no outlet. That can't be pleasant. I believe a lot of dogs end up getting lost/escaping because of this. Some dogs can even injure themselves trying to get at a female. The first male dog my family had was neutered already when we got him at 3 months old from a shelter. We believe it messed him up; he didn't even get to mature properly, after all. My mom and I decided to neuter our second male at 6 months along with his sister, although nowadays I wouldn't before a year. There's so much information and pros and cons that it's a tough decision to make, not only on doing it, but when.
@AkashaWingates

A normal male doesnt get crazy if there are bitches in heat in their neighborhood.. If a male is that over sexual it's either bad breeding or bad training. If ppl are neutering their dogs before they are grown up its impossible for breeders to know if they have a problem with over sexuality in their lines. Mine doesnt even get crazy when he's in the same house or car as a bitch in heat. Yeah, he whines but nothing more. No problems with training or eating or resting. This is what good breeding does.

Sorry I got more confused after watching the video. Based on the pros and cons you listed, it is not clear to me if neutering is needed or not. It's true that health-wise there really isn't very strong evidence as to why you should neuter the dog. I think the biggest reasons to neuter would be behavior reasons and preventing unwanted pregnancies. But if you are to neuter I'd say wait until at least 18 months personally. This topic is so involved it's insane. Even veterinarian professionals disagree on what all this means so don't stress too much. The studies that are released also all have their own approach to gauging their results which makes it worse (some compare dogs who are neutered vs. not neutered, others compare dogs neutered at 6 months vs. 18 months, etc).

I'd really like him to develop an athletic and muscular physique. I'm assuming neutering him would cause less muscle and bone development due to lack of testosterone, would this be true? Why would you spay/neuter a dog that has no problem? Also, we have a huge problem with dcm in the breed and neutering dogs will severely shrink the breedingbase. If everyone does it we will not have any dogs to breed anymore. We do not know which dogs who will live a long and healthy live and these dogs are important in breeding. In Europe we do not spay/neuter dogs routine-like and its not a problem. Train your dog instead ;) Same-sex aggression is a thing in the breed and you just have to accept that as a dobermannowner. If you want a dog that works with all dogs, get another breed.

Interesting! So the point you're making is it reduces the potential gene pool by getting all of these dogs neutered and if a few of these dogs would live to a ripe old age (say 14+) then their genes might be important to the breeding base. That's a solid point actually!

Unfortunately our breeder contractually requires us to neuter. He is currently 18 months old and we are about to see the vet about the process. I will say he is perfectly fine and really the only thing I wish would go away a bit is his being very territorial the older he is getting the worse it is, oh and the fact the marked both me and my son...but has not marked any in the house...i guess he is saying we both belong to him. At 18 months and 93 lbs i am not worried at this point of it having an effect on his muscle mass, size. I would skip it if the breeder didn't mandate it for her litters. Unless i wanted to pay an extra several thousand dollars and have her dictate when he could breed, and also have the process done only in her home. I guess it is good some breeders are very selective in this as it does keep down backyard breeding/bad breeding prospects.

I can testify that you shouldn't get your female doberman neutered before 18 months or they have almost a 40% chance of developing "spay incontinence". My girl was spayed at about 10 months and she was good for two years then started leaking. She would literally just drip urine starting about 2 hours after her last pee outdoors. They are the 2nd most likely dogs to develop this. Boxers are number one. She was started on Proin which worked for about 8 months now we're on our way to the vet today to see about other meds..

Excellent question, Dr Karen Brecker has a video on this exact topic. Look it up. 😎

Wow Amanda, I didn't even consider this. Like a vasectomy for dogs! I mean it makes sense that they could do this but I really don't know about this. On the surface, I'd assume it would probably solve a lot of those health issues. Uh oh, you're sending me off down a rabbit hole I have a feeling. I need to look into this!

The data for females is VERY different. Although at the beginning you said spayed or neutered it was 100% male information. DO NOT follow the advice of this video if you have, or are getting a female.

Please provide data for behavior benefits of neutering. The only proven benefit is reduced marking. The reduced aggression is actually a myth. All studies that I am aware of have shown neutering increases aggression, reactivity, and shyness in dogs. If I missed a study that contradicts this please let me know.

If your a responsible person you never spay or neuter your pets! It’s terrible for their health.

Why would you even neuter/spay a dog that is healthy? I have a female dobermann and wouldn't consider spaying her... I mean I wouldn't do that to myself either. Never had fixed dogs and they were all healthy and better behaved than neutered dogs 😊

My chihuahua got spayed at three - we waited too long and she developed cancer that we had to get removed while she was under for her spay . Be careful and always checks for bumps on her lower belly bc cancer is so common if you don’t spray females early on

I looked into this myself and talked with people that own only Dobermans and they recommend not to get your Doberman Neutered...so I'm not getting my Doberman Fixed and the vet said this is fine as long as you're responsible and not letting your Doberman run the neighborhood looking for dogs in heat...lol

dogs can get diabetes but that has to do with diet. if dogs are neuter/spay they have health problems they won't be able to have puppies which is the whole point of the practice, and they can die.

My Doberman turned 2 this year. I worry’s everyday of one day I’ll lose him. I’m doing research almost everyday to see how I can make him live longer. 🥲
