You're dead right about Macs running routine maintenance tasks during idle periods. Leaving them turned on does no harm, unless you're worried about your electricity bill. With that in mind, I bought an iMac from Apple's Refurbishment and Clearance Store for significantly less than the usual Apple Store price, which ran almost 24/7/365 for over ten years without any serious issues apart from a little more dust inside the case. In that time it was turned off fully no more than a few dozen times. Intentional reboots were done only when a new OS version was installed, and on only 5 occasions when a third party app caused a problem. There were also about 3 power outages during that period. It was used for many purposes, including work, TV via a USB dongle (we never had a TV), running SDR apps, testing beta software, Virtual Machines running XP, Linux, BSD and more, plus working for several years as a multimedia server. It was then given to a friend who ran an unsupported version of MacOS until a few days ago.The computer will come back to me soon, and then it will be used to run Linux for a few more years. It might even outlast me! So it has been worked hard throughout its life with no worries whatsoever. Use your Mac, and use it hard. It can take it.

It's the same as with all lithium-ion battery powered devices. Charges lower than 20% and higher than 80% (as a rule of thumb) cause chemical reactions that cannot be undone in the battery, causing a lower lifetime. Therefore, a lot of devices (such as my HP laptop) have a setting to make charging stop at 80% so you can leave it on the charger while working. That is ultimately the perfect option because it also eliminates the charging/discharging between 20 and 80 percent, although this causes less degradation than the aforementioned chemical reactions. I think there might be software available for Macs that also makes charging stop around 80%. I'm quite surprised that Apple doesn't include that option natively.

If you use it for long times without charging and briefly charge it in between, it will quick charge the battery to make sure you won't run out of power. Maybe it will reduce the maximum charge if it learns that you never need it for long without plugging it in, but I'm not sure.

For newer macs, sure. As a DJ, I have an old 2011 MBP that I only use during gigs, so it doesn't make sense for me to leave it on sleep mode since it will go several days to a week without being used and by the time I turn it on, there's no battery power left (battery was changed a couple years ago). It's better for me to shut it down and turn it on later where I would still have 99% battery life when I start the next gig. Though in the first 5-6 years I rarely shut that thing down and it was used daily.

The advice is reasonable and applies as well to Win and Linux based systems. A shutdown is unnecessary unless a system reset is required because of an error. However, you should watch out for one specific scenario. As mentioned, unless a system is shutdown it will perform various maintenance tasks. Nothing special here, unless the machine is both unplugged (as recommended by this video) AND a system update is initialized. If the computer is short on battery power and unable to complete the whole update process, then the system may get ruined and become unrecoverable. If there is not enough battery power to complete other maintenance tasks, such as file re-indexing, the system will detect the situation, close all files to prevent damage to file system and only then shut down. In other words, always make sure the battery can sustain a system update before you put it to sleep. Or turn off the automatic update in system set-up.

Best to plug it in overnight. Then it’s fully charged when you need to make an unexpected trip. Used to be that the battery was only good for a set number of ‘cycles’ so allowing it to deplete was wearing it unnecessarily. Don’t know how the newer batteries work, though - they may be different. If the battery dies while in sleep mode you may lose any unsaved data, though I believe newer OSs have auto-save features that should prevent that.

@@sirrathersplendid4825 the comment is old, but: The battery's want to be used. Used as in decharged(used) and charged. If you want your devices to live as long as possible, you'll use them fairly regularly and charge them from ~10-90%. Electric battery's also have that limit. You can't fully charge their battery and you can't fully drain them, even if it's shown as full or empty. That prolongues their life.

This is coming from a either a sleep setting that was unchecked called something like “allow hard drive to sleep’ you can find this in the power management settings make sure the box is checked or the issue comes from background apps such as the ones that live in your Mac toolbar. Like a CPU monitoring app or system apps you have added to your Mac that add extra functionality. Try quitting some of those apps one at a time until you find the culprit. Also Google Chrome will absolutely drain your battery during sleep since it is always running in the background so if you use chrome look for an alternative such as Vivaldi or Brave. I hope this helps.

I did the test myself and I'd recommend you guys do too. Shutting down frees up so much RAM. You don't have to shut it down everyday but I'd say every third day. On my test putting it to sleep it'd always boot up at 7.47GB utility versus when I shut it down where it'd boot up at 5.68GB. In all scenarios I changed nothing. The same apps (Chrome, Windows & Excel) were open. Laptop was also plugged in both scenarios. One thing I noticed though when I didn't shut down there were some stubborn bugs. For example, Chrome would not open a window to attach a document

I tried leaving my macbook air in sleep mode instead of fully shutting down for a while. However I'm now going back to shutting the machine down after use. There have been a few times when the battery completely discharged, which has made an impact to battery health. I sometimes don't start the laptop for a week or two, so this could have been too long in sleep mode, which also might draw extra charge if any background processes are running. For me, the disadvantage of possibly completely discharging the battery far outweigh the smaller benefits of leaving the machine on.

When I've finished using my M2 MacBook Air, I plug in the charger, when light is green, I unplug then go to bed. I have the fast charger, and so far when I go back on the Mac next evening, it's fully charged. So, far in sleep mode, I'm not loosing battery life. When I shut down the laptop, messed up KZitem, with blank boxes with no text. Had to do a restart on my Mac. I guess for me, I don't used it as long as you do, to have the battery completely drain.

Since they use only SSDs, I think it's better just to put it to sleep instead of hibernating, because hibernating writes data on the SSD and sleeping writes it in the RAM, What's the difference? That unlike RAM a Hard Drive and an SSD have a writing limit, and hibernating too often will mean no more writing wich in a SSD will mean you'll lose everything

Thanks for the video! Two things: 1. Could you touch on tools like AlDente to limit the maximum charge of your battery? I'm using my MBA with a USB-C monitor that also charges it, so in order to not have it on 100% all the time, I'm running AlDente to keep it at max of 70%. 2. I don't shut down or restart my MacBook Air except for system updates and that's been perfectly fine. However, I have been shutting down my work iMac each day since I'm working from home and have to pay for electricity myself. But I just looked at sleep power consumption of the iMac 5K and it seems negligible, so I might as well put it to sleep instead and save some time each morning when I start work. 🤔 It might even go as far as saving electricity since the booting and shutting it down every day might take more electricity than having it sleep. 😂

I only restart my systems when installing updates, or when there’s a system glitch. Otherwise, I generally do not shutdown my computers, ever. Three things come to mind if anyone questions whether they should or not: One… Banks never seem to shut down their machines, they always seem like they are on screen saver mode, and what is more important a system to be concerned about then the worlds monetary system. Two… iPads technically never really shuts down, it just goes into a deep sleep mode. Three… So does your iPhone… …
