As far as the floors being so different, I'd put my vote in for putting steps everywhere, it'd be the easiest, and probably most accurate option to the original.

Yes, in the construction date of the Chatêau, it was normal (and expected) to have some rooms higher than others, not just for "status", but also for views from the balconies or just for fun to confuse your guests. The modern tendency of "everything at the same level" is good for visitors (even more if they need a wheelchair) but anachronistic to the building itself.

Dan: Haven't read any comments, but if that tub still holds water, you can use it as a pool for the kids this summer. Years ago, I put one in my patio garden, ran a black hose on the roof for hot, solar water, and used it to relax in. I made a trough from the drain to use the water to water the plants I planted around it. It was really a neat, cool idea. And very nice on a hot summer day/evening! You can use some stones and/or wood beams as steps to get in/out of it!

Depends on what was done and whether it required permission. The new septic system probably did but moving the kitchen from the basement into an existing ground floor room very likely didn't, so while there might be a plan of the septic system somewhere on file, it might not show any of the interior. Besides, late 60s/early 70s is exactly the time period when France transitioned to a national system of permissions, so it's not entirely sure there is actually anything on file if those alterations were done early in Mironnets ownership, i.e. 1967 or 1968. I seem to remember reading the system of the permis de construire was introduced in 1967 but not fully established until well into the 1970s.

The original architectural plans - if there indeed were any - would not be of much use now. The fenestration has clearly been altered, rather drastically, in several places, and major additions added. I believe that the art nouveau decor was part of a major remodeling of an originally Neo-Grec design. Nevertheless architectural renderings should be done at some point as a reference. I would strongly consider moving the main stair; perhaps have a smaller, safer fireproof steel stair in another area. That way you won't have to jump off the balcony in event of another fire. The stair needlessly took up much of the foyer and rebuilding it as it was could very easily cost 250,000 Euro.

Hello and thank you for undertaking this massive project. Growing up in a 200 year old home I understand your journey. I love the fact you are of a restoration mindset versus gut and modernize, so many people want what is new and shiny instead of the lost craftsmanship of old. Your discovery of it being an actual historical site must give you a great deal of food for thought. Again, I totally understand the historical aspect of having such a home. I do have a a question on your original bathroom fixtures. I think they can be restored and they should be. You just cant find those whole very often these days and you are bringing back a small window of the past. We had an old cast iron stove oven and had to finally fix one of the stove top panels, we just took it to a machine shop and had them reweld it and buff the seam. Your tub could be blasted down and resurfaced. Not sure where you could find a place for that but there has to be somewhere. And I agree with another here, if possible to contact a group that specializes is historical restoration they would be an invaluable resource for any questions you may have. Your local historical society might be a good place to start. Sorry for the wall of text, I don't usually comment often but decided to put my two cents in the pot. I so enjoy watching all you are doing and have done. Dont lose heart, you are doing a fantastic job and one well worth doing. Dan, old buildings often had higher ceilings in bigger rooms on the main floor than in smaller ones, so as to keep in proportion. So obviously the floor above would be at different heights with steps between one room and another. It would seem to me a very bad idea not to respect the original heights in your restoration, you’re likely to find windows at the wrong levels otherwise.

True. The White House was built that way. The ceiling of the East room is a foot or two higher than the rest of the ceilings on the State Floor, resulting in the floors for the rooms above it being that much higher than the rest of the second floor. those rooms were accessed via a small set of steps until a ramp was installed for Franklin Roosevelt.

Could it be that the floor levels are off because the chateau was added on to at one point? That would make sense that the floors would have been leveled differently. Also, from what I have read and worked at in regards to construction of hospitals between 1850 to the mid-1920's (Victorian Era), people that built on to standing stone structures, often had "cubby holed hallways" meaning they were at different heights, turned weird corners and rooms slotted at different levels - not sure why, just that it made for interesting navigation in hospitals (and hotels). This was a nightmare for the staff! Me included! I'd suggest that, as much as you can, level all of them straight as you can. You'll pat yourself on the back once it's all one level.

Changing those levels now would be almost impossible without changing window heights and balconies on the outside, which Dan apparently isn't allowed to do.

You may need a temporary platform at ground level to make loading and unloading more practical and I believe height ability(number of floors up) is more important than horizontal movement as it should stay in one spot for quite a while. After all having a "service lift" would make your job a fair bit quicker would it not? perhaps setting it up in the stairwell. That is unless you are able to get a actual scaffold elevator at a cost you can live with.

Dan, check the levels downstairs. Take a random row of bricks and check whether they are at the same level. If it is the case, then there was probably in the past a couple of stairs down or up here and there between the front and the back of the chateau. If on the other side the row of bricks is tilting (like the Pisa Tower) then you have a much serious problem of subsidence. If this is the case, stop all works and contact a structural engineer.

I'm sure a substantial part of that height difference is intentional. You can get a glimpse of it in the videos where Dan climbs across the water tanks down onto the little balconies, the balcony floor is quite a bit lower than the hallway floor by the water tank and all these bits are still in reasonable shape. Also note that the lower floors are fairly level, if the top floor wasn't, the brickwork would need to have collapsed into itself and that's almost impossible, a brick wall can't compress by half a metre without completely falling apart. If the ground floor where Dan removed all those lovely tiles was completely out of whack too, then I'd be slightly worried but it clearly isn't.

On the fourth side, beginning in the entrance to a master suite,it dropped down two or three stairs and was level with the terrace/balcony . It was kind of like the shape of a U . On three sides every room had a large windows so each had a beautiful view. The master suite took up ,beginning in about the mid point, the center portion of that level with the steps down. She had chairs, small table, some hooks for clothes and shoe racks there. Then it opened into a full length room ,in a rectangle shape, with, lots of big windows on all sides, french doors to balcony , beautiful, big master bath. The entire room was shaped like a short letter T. I know that took a bit, I show things better than I explain them. Lols. I'm trying to say maybe the rooms had that kind of thing going on. 1:24 Ok so the reason there are so many different levels is that ceiling height on the lower floor was the primary consideration and the 4th floor was a utility floor/attic. No one cares whether your floor jogs up and down in the attic because it's just extra storage space. As a lifelong student of older architecture and having designed things like older buildings I have some really janky transitions in the non primary spaces as the are just in service to the spaces below. (Side note also make sure the floor was were you think it was for sure) Keep it the way it is or it's not going to work right anymore.

The house probably had mezzanine flooring in the rooms. Big old Victorian Houses like that one normally had them to give it some variation. I would guess the floor dropped down into the turret so that the balconies could be accessed and have a nice clean view. There were probably steps leading down from the corridor where you have put the floor. Once you start to assess where to put the new floors, the original layout should become a bit clearer :) hopefully.

That might have been a design choice to line them up with the windows in the turret (note that all the lower windows are at landing height rather than the same as the windows of the rooms either side) and make the turret taller. The stair well didn't need high ceilings so they could get by with lowering that room but not the hallway.

Suggestion for the apparent height differences. Since it’s going to involve a lot of extra work to make them the same level, just create a step down towards the the back and a step up to the front. That’s or a small ramped hallway, but the step up and down would be cheapest. I look forward to the progress!

I think it's the other way round, the front above the main stairs is the lowest and the back bedroom the highest and that also had the highest roof, much higher than the hallway. Absolutely agree with you though, put in stairs, changing the floor heights would be a proper nightmare.

Such a perfect bricklaying...the meter difference is about a half flight of stairs, kind of odd. Nice distraction. We're back at our burned out rural property and got the power turned on. Hope to get the plumbing sorted out because my pool survived, but I put the pump and hoses inside for winter. See ya, tomorra.

It’s normal practice in design to have a step down into a balcony or open terrace, to control and avoid rain to flow into the covered spaces. Great job, you have a lot of positive energy.

Dan you should consider asking for a volunteer to help you and be the "bottom floor person" - loading the winch, moving material, cleaning up, etc. Imagine what you could do if you weren't climbing ladders all day.

With regards to the different levels, the first arch looks as though it were put in originally to create a feature for 2 or 3 stairs in your a hallway or somewhere, I think even if that were not so, you should add these for architectural personality, small landings with stairways are always interesting.

I like your problem solving techniques Dan…..you almost had the bathtub sliding down the ladder and metal beam. I was just glad it didn’t pull you with it! And Nick’s idea of a “bathroom” in the woods is hysterical. Keep up the great work….it’s fun watching the chateau change bit by bit. 👍🏻😉🙏

I saw the cutest bathtub planter. It had dirt & flowers, but at the end it had one of those planters that looks like a ladies head. They had plants planted in the head & it looked just like a lady was in the bathtub taking a 🛀. I had a bathtub planter once & planted white plumbago in it & it looked like the tub had a big bubble bath inside.

It's nice having steps everywhere. It's like Castle ten Berghe. It makes a grander entrance to a room. I think their dining room has an elevated section to see out the windows, so that the windows on the outside are uniform. Otherwise, the windows aren't in the right place on the interior. And it might have made higher ceilings on the floor below or been a path for ductwork or plumbing. Or maybe the elevated side had a better view, or to be seen better from below.

Keep in mind we're talking about the third floor here. I think most of these rooms were originally meant for servants. The grand rooms on the lower floors all seem to be on the same level throughout. I wonder if the different levels up there are the consequence of the crazy roof line or vice versa.

Love that very quick barbecue lunch. Is that what you do every day? Looked very cheffy and nutritious to give you all that energy you're expending! And really curious as to what happened to your camera, Dan. It looked like it was a write-off in the pic you shared. Did it just need a spit and polish and all good to go again? We love your vlogs and watching you progress with such efficiency and enthusiasm. Thank you for sharing the ride with us. Very happy to be a patreon too, but with KZitem, is it true that we need to watch the entire advertisement in order for you to get payments? Does it limit payment for you if we click the Skip Ad button?

From an AI chat: For example, skippable video ads are the most common type of ads on KZitem. They allow viewers to skip the ad after five seconds. If the viewer skips the ad before 30 seconds (or before the end of the video if it’s shorter than 30 seconds), then the creator does not get paid for that view. However, if the viewer watches the entire ad or clicks on it, then the creator gets paid for that view
