Great advice, you're not the first to say to get a steam page up as soon as possible but it's great that you explain the process and the reason why! The Gauntlet of Power is such a great subtitle!!

Awesome. This video is inspiring me to set up the Steam page for my game, which is long overdue (though I have been marketing on KZitem and Gamejolt).

There is something you want to keep in mind, while it’s true that having a store page as soon as possible means you can begin collecting wishlists. Not all wishlists are created equal. The older the wishlist is, the less of an impact it will have on the steam recommendation algorithm. So a game with 100k wishlists might be lower on the list of recommended new titles on launch than a game with just 30k wishlists if the majority of the 100k are over a year old, while all of the ones from the 30k game are only a couple of months old.

Funny that this video came out just a couple of days after I finally managed to put up the Steam page for my first game... It took me a couple of week to set everything up and yes, some things were a bit boring to do but I felt necessary to do everything myself because in the end the Steam page is a reflection of the game itself and to an extent it was a bit like working on the game, even if in some weird ways... I'm going to improve it over time for sure! Anyway, Whishlisted Heroes of Loot :)

If you get like into half of the development time and you're way away from those 7k wishlists, is it a good idea to ditch the game? Or is it even a good idea to ditch development based on amount of wishlists you've got over some period of time, i.e. the rate you got them?
@orangepixelgames
Жыл бұрын
No I don't think wishlists should dictate your development. But it does tell you if you maybe should improve the marketing of the game (that also includes trying different screenshots,or different descriptions, etc) or perhaps improve the game itself? Are people not getting it yet? And it's still possible to do decent sales even with less wishlists!

IMHO it makes only sense if you keep updating the page with news.

Sure! Doesn't have to be every day or even week, but do keep people updated. Those updates are comparable to a newsletter, they show up in people's Steam dashboard and keep reminding them of your game

Hey, someone PLEASE help me! I followed this "early page" advice, but I didn't have TIME to work on my game for almost a year, so the game has been sitting there with bad images and descriptions. Do you think it will be "stained" or something like that, even if I improve the images later/when I have time? Thanks!!
@orangepixelgames

Shouldn't matter :) Just keep improving the page when you can, it's an ongoing process anyway.

I've heard this same advice from other devs as well and I definitely see the wisdom in it! Having no intentions to go against this advice (whenever I do get around to making a commercial game that is), I do have a question. I heard from somewhere that had suggested that it is beneficial to put out a Steam page as soon as possible; however, you do want to factor just how early it is. If you put out a Steam page but then the game takes you 4 years to make they had said a lot of the hype would have died down around the game and many of those wishlists won't translate over to sales since many already moved on. Does this seem to be legitimate advice or, in the end, does this not really matter?
@orangepixelgames

There is such a thing as quality of wishlists. But I think that if you keep people informed throughout development with regular posts and updates, they will stick around if they still like what they see every time. So those wishlists should still be valuable in the end
