Having a supportive care-giver is crucial. I'm so glad that you're updating about this Tiff, I don't think people realize just how important and meaningful a partner's contributions are to the entire process. It is a lot of hard work, and we so greatly appreciate you.

I'm really surprised that the doctor let him out of the hospital so soon! BUT there is a huge emphasis on discharging patients ASAP as the hospital is a prime location to contract medically resistent infections. Last time I was in one was for prostrate removal and the gentleman in the next room was scheduled to be in hospital for 5 days and it had been 5 weeks and he still wasn't well enough to go home....all because of his contracting one of those medically resistent infections. Thanks Tiff for the update and so glad to hear the surgery went well and Dade is recovering nicely. I've had MANY surgeries, mostly major and it ain't no fun. Give my best to Dade.

Tiffany, first of all, you are doing marvelously. In any sort of major surgery like this, I think it is as hard or harder on the main caregiver as on the patient. My sister has been a nurse at a major hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for nearly 40 years and has been in tears after sending a patient home when she feels it is too early to do so but the hospital is forced to follow the insurance guidelines. So, Tiffany, you are doing very well here. It is very good to hear that Dade is doing well. He is soooo fortunate to have you and Zane there as a loving support system for him, I believe that is vitally important. He is a fighter as are you, and you both will get through this to the other side just fine. My positive thoughts, energy, and healing grace are sent daily! I am so proud of all of you and admire you so much! Kudos.

so so happy all went well! Ginger is amazing for nausea. maybe make Dade some weak iced tea and add some ginger even a few shreds of it. tea is better than water has better hydration properties and antioxidants waters so blah. might as well serve a purpose as well ginger rocks gas, tummy problems, helps with it all just remember to much of anything can be dangerous. Whooo Hoo Dade! so happy for you and Tiff you rock and Zane she's just about one of the most beautiful creature's and so smart! keep talking cate of each other I'm just ecstatic that he is safe and no infection. I honestly hope it doesn't sound silly but you are such beautiful people and I'm so thrilled with all the good positive news. Dade, wishing you as fast as a realistically possible recovery.. end of summer as I don't know but just so happy for all of you, bravery and tenacity true fighter to achieve happiness in life can't ask for more than that. all my bestB-) Jen

I had my surgery day before Dade here in Belgrade and my recovery experience could not have been more different. I was im the hospital for 3 days with round the clock nursing care. I don't think I got our of bed until late the day after surgery. Back at the apartment I have had a visit from a doctor every single day. My folks have been sightseeing during the day, I absolutely did not need constant attention. It seems really risky to just send a patient home right after surgery. I would be very scared to have surgery in the US after hearing about the system there. Hang in there and have a safe trip home!

Hello, my friend. This is Dade. I also, did not need constant attention, and actually was able to walk up three flights of stairs to our apartment right after surgery. This surgery was different for Tiff in that she needed to bring me food and water, which is not some she has not had to do for me before. This was a particular challenge because she is trying to care for out little daughter. Tiff has been out sightseeing as well, every day. Just to be clear, my surgery experience was amazing with Dr. Crane, and I opted to not stay in the hospital because I do not have insurance. In any case, congratulations on your surgery! I am very happy for you:)

ElectricDade Good to hear from you, and I am happy that you are doing fine. It just sounds really scary to me, not staying at the hospital. You are much tougher than I am, for sure. I would absolutely not have been able to walk anywhere the first 3 days. I am also self-pay, but the Belgrade experience is all inclusive. I've seen results from Dr. Crane and he is a great surgeon. I opted for Dr. Miro because it's only two hour plane trip and it is much cheaper for me than going overseas. Dr. Miro is amazing. Really, all the doctors here have been so great. Sounds like you have had a similar positive experience. This really is a miracle of modern science that this is even possible and I am so very grateful that I have this opportunity, because so many transmen just simply don't.
@ElectricDade

nielsjansendk I completely agree, my friend. We are very fortunate. I know what you mean about travel... that's one of the reasons I chose Crane over Miro. I'm just a six hour drive from Crane. I hope you are recovering well!

ElectricDade I'm having problems with infection, but other that that I think I am making good progress. I'm documenting everything on my KZitem channel (I think you can get to it by clicking on my username but who knows with all this Google+ stuff). There is a playlist called metoidioplasty where I collect all my videos. I think it is very important to spread information about this surgery in the community. So many people that talk about it have not gone through it themselves, and so many that have gone through it choose to be silent. But I also vlog because it is therapeutic for me, so it's not all about being altruistic.

Wow, it seems very strange to me to send someone home like that after major surgery. You'd need help with everything - from monitoring vital parameters to hygiene to mobilisation - everything. Which you guys are experiencing, but medical staff ought to know and inform you about in detail, at the very least. But I guess your systeme is different - here (- in Sweden, with pretty much free healthcare) it would have been a hospital stay for sure. Have you any medication for the nausea? If not, try to get hold of some metoclopramide - wiki says it's trade name in the US is Reglan. If he's this nauseated after surgery, he's likely to be again if ever he has surgery again, so remember to tell the staff then that he suffers from severe post-operative nausea, as it can be largely prevented with the right drugs and other actions if known of beforehand. People are likely to have that reaction if they suffer from motion-sickness, migraines, bad pregnancy nausea etc. - for other people who may be reading this. Best of luck to Dade with the recovery, and to you with nursing him back to full health. :)

Well, hi there! I've been following your videos four over a year now and I really love your experiences. You always seem so happy and luck seems to be almost always on your side. I've got to admit, that I'm somewhat jealous ;) But why did you leave the hospital so early? Wasn't that dangerous? As well as I know, in Germany they make you stay in hospital for at least a week after a surgery like that... Wouldn't the risk of infektion increase to much by going home? And what would you have done, if there weren't a possibility to get a free period? ó.ò But no matter what: I'm so happy for you, that everything went so well. All best wishes and Dade, get well soon! :) Dean

I am absolutely no on one...there is no reason to listen to me. That said. Nortriptyline, for chronic issues. Pain, nausea, longer term healing. It will initially help with anxiety too... (all which would be totally reasonable). Ask for something to counter the negative effects of pain meds ie nausea, there are simply too many to mention. And obviously, anything and everything that will keep the "works" moving. (Im pretty sure you have figured out the ramifications of constipation commonly associated with....just about everything you are encountering right now...pain meds, dehydration, lack of mobility. Just thought I would add my 2 cents. Thoughts and prayers to the 3 of you!
