Your brain will go even more haywire when you're there as English is so commonly used. When I lived in Netherlands for a bit, people would randomly switch to English and back to Dutch in a conversation, especially the younger generation.

that’s because afrikaans was made out of dutch and a few other languages. afrikaans used to be a dutch dialect but when the netherlands stopped interfering with the slaves in afrika they gave up the dutch dialect title as well. which is when they started to call it afrikaans.

they generally speak english there!! but it’s not a hard language to learn, it’s very similar to english and german. i was fluent within 6 months.

english will do just fine. Almost everybody speaks english to a certain degree, some with really thick accents, but they speak it. If you're gonna live here it might be useful to learn dutch, but it's not like you can't make yourself understandable with english.

@@guff9567 WE DID NOT! We fought them with all we had and they had great trouble as they expected no resistance at all, since we were neutral in WW1. When the Germans realised we were going to fight back, they didn’t like it because their blitzkrieg-tactics were dependant on speed. So they decided the best option was to bomb Rotterdam to rubble. They threatened to do the same with all the big cities everywhere including Amsterdam and Den Haag/The Hague. So that’s why our government fled and capitulated so more civilians deaths were stopped. DONT TALK ABOUT STUFF YOU NO NOTHING ABOUT.

"Ik ben niet de jongste meer" is natuurlijk ironisch, maar eerlijk. Ik herken het wel een beetje. Maar dat ligt ook vooral aan mijn eigen leercapaciteit. Talen vind ik gwn moeilijk om op te pakken, dus of ik dan de energie en motivatie voor kan vinden om daar echt in te investeren is nog maar zeer de vraag. Als ik veel eerder regelmatig met andere talen bezig zou zijn geweest zou het natuurlijk een heel stuk makkelijker zijn...
