I'm currently re-playing GW2 on an alt with a friend who's playing it for the first time. Trying to get out of my comfort zone and playing a Heal Warrior while leveling is rough 😅 We were barely able to beat the lvl 60 dungeon even with other players joining. But it's been fun re-experiencing the game with a fresh account that doesn't have the account wide buffs that I've earned on my main account.

To me, "leveling" has such a different meaning and purpose in FFXIV vs GW2 that it's like comparing apples to oranges. How you do it, why you do it, what it means for your character progression vs account progression, what type of gameplay is involved, what happens when you reach "max level"... it's like night and day. One could argue GW2 and FFXIV aren't even in the same genre, really.

There are a lot more features in XIV, than MSQ or the hunting log, to help you level up, that you're still yet to find out. That said, you can't do shait without the MSQ so.... there's that😅 In that regard i strongly agree with you. GW2 leveling process is a lot more fun. It really falls to SE to find ways to make the MSQ more fun (and you'll find out some new things in the MSQ as you go throughout the different expansions) but, they're still miles away to turn MSQ into more than story experience and blend it with a fun gaming experience. In the end, I love XIV gameplay (we have a bit of a different opinion there😅)but, it is as if, the gaming experience is all outside the MSQ that is little more than an interactive story sometimes.... Granted, GW2 story is nothing that can be compared to XIV, thus, making it easier to give freedom to the player, I suppose. Still, GW2 makes for a more enjoyable leveling, for sure.

That's exactly my point of view also. I like GW2 very much for the whole "coherent" gameplay experience offered. FF14 MSQ, apart from the writing, is just a chore to go through honestly. The gameplay experience is not fun when you're doing MSQ. Like, really not. I stopped definitively some 20/30 hours in HW. After taking a massive 2 months break just after reaching HW when I got to one of the first quest where you have to run through sentinels and watch towers just to hear meaningless reports... "Wait it will get so good when you reach HW !". Waow, yes. I'm impressed. I couldn't force myself after that. I just wondered "Why am I doing this ? Better read a book at this point. Or watch a movie". GW2 story writing is nowhere near FF14. Yet, I had more fun going through it and unlocking the next parts. I had more fun unlocking maps, exploring it, doing meta events. Puzzles. Challenges. Finding mounts. Doing some achievements. You know : actually playing my game. All this while I was going through the MSQ. Which, sadly, is lacking in FF14.

@@mimmim13aiv that's why I also said "...the gaming experience is all outside the MSQ...". It is, and it's a lot of fun. The MSQ is important (and regardless of the bland gameplay in it, I find it compelling enough) but the gameplay of XIV is outside of the MSQ. The various types of raids are great, the huge amount of dungeons are great, exploration areas are great, the crafting/gathering and fishing systems are great, the housing system, the tribes, the hunts, the treasures maps, the boss trials, the Gold Saucer, the job system, including the limited jobs and everything Im forgetting about...the gameplay in XIV is great, is just not found in MSQ... unfortunately. Still, never crossed my mind to give up mid story, Heavenward being my favourite one at that ☺️, I think the story is compelling enough to get you going. @@sophiastorm8616 I agree with most of what you say. But locking most of all you quote behind the MSQ is an error. I mean, good for you for going through MSQ. I just couldn't when most of what you do is just be an errand boy for NPC. Only cool stuff is the dungeons and story in between those long corridor in which you walk and tp. Story is top notch. Gameplay is almost absent during it. Thus everything you quote is endgame, so not really in the debate about leveling experience. Maybe you're right, GW2 has less endgame. I'd say most of what you point is one way or another present in GW2. Fishing, gathering, meta... Only thing lacking is as good raiding/dungeons experience as FF, that's for sure. But due to GW2 hybrid tab target, you'll never get the same feeling as FF or WoW during raids. I had so much fun just with the story dungeons and first raid in ARR. Or just unlocking new classes. They are really well done. But to get there, you have to eat how many hundred of hours doing MSQ ? Or buy a skip... It bothers me a bit that I should buy a skip for me to enjoy raids and what not. GW2 did leveling better and its leveling system allows you to actually reach the endgame very fast IF you want to. Or just casually play while leveling. Or just PvP. Or just explore. I played GW2 on release and do return once every couple of years. GW2 and ESO do "leveling" better if leveling is the only objective. Like you say, FFXIV is more story-driven. Some will claim that GW2 does have a story, but it's not that great and has never been a reason for me to return. I often return because I enjoy their events in-game. The problem with GW2 is obviously the character limitation and the inability to just make more characters on another server without a whole separate account. I've found myself deleting some characters if I just want to try a different class. That makes me kind of sad.

Leveling Up wih the MSQ vs GW2 open world, I think the main difference (beyond the preference) is which one is more ALT friendly, and GW2 wins by far, in FFXIV you can do sidequest ,hunts, fates, farming and crafting, Dungeons, Roullettes, even PVP to level up, but like you said the biggest chunk of exp. comes from the MSQ, so only your main job will be at level , granted GW2 is "freely" and personally I mix the leveling, story + events + openworld and it is so fast that there is no competition, and because we don't play only one class or one job. Hey there, CaffDad. If you don't mind, I'll make one correction about the thing you said about the Elder Scrolls Online's level-scaling at around 7:12. However, I'll admit that this is basically just nitpicking and you may very well have known it on your own and just used it as a shorthand example for Guild Wars 2. It's not so much that you're scaled down to the zone's level, but more like the mobs sync up to yours. It kind of makes it just a tiny bit confusing, because Guild Wars 2 has the simplicity of simply bringing down the character to the zone's effective level, so every character in that zone is effectively at a similar range of power. But for ESO's technical systems, it scales to the level of the players individually. If you're a level 50 character, the mob's level will be 50. If you're a level 15 character, the mob's level will be 15. And somehow this is still in effect even if you (level 50) and your friend (level 15) are hitting the same mob. It's complex, even if it pretty much just accomplishes the same thing. But, interesting how they managed to pull that off all the same. In any case, the only difference you and your friend would have in that scenario is you having better gear, more skills to choose from and the like. Speaking as someone who's played all three (GW2, FFXIV and ESO-even WoW) concerning the contents of the video, I have to agree with your assessment that Guild Wars 2 wins out, particularly with regard to boosting your character. What you may not have mentioned is the fact that the tomes and scrolls of leveling that you get can be earned directly in-game, rather than bought at a cash shop like you have to with FFXIV. This also ties into another win that Guild Wars 2 has over FFXIV, which is the fact that most everything is account-bound-which GW2 lends itself well with being alt-friendly. Everything you've earned on your main, you have it forever. There's no regrinding, farming, and there's no having to go through everything again. While FFXIV respects your time as opposed to a particular MMORPG of its type (ahem WoW ahem), Guild Wars 2 (and ESO) have it beat in that regard.

lol, level cap increase is not done for "retention", it's done because it's an RPG, and in RPGs your character getting stronger is pretty much the single thing all RPGs have in common, and this does play a part in the story in the kinds of enemies we face throughout the expansions. A level 50 adventurer should never be able to deal with some of the later bosses for obvious reasons if you've done the story. The actual retention is the story content and the raids. And there's no "gear chasing" in FF unless you're in a race to world first team and even then getting all BiS gear is infinitely easier and faster than wow and even GW2.

FFXIV bozja is designed so close to what GW2 leveling experience is and a lot of FFXIV loves that kind of leveling experience. That's all you really have to know. For instance, they added a feature called beast tribe quests that gives tons of exp for your alt job -- but you can only do 3 quests a day -- wtf? This limit doesn't do anything other than to keep players on their subscription model. Also your character movement speed prior to owning a mount (and even after owning a mount) is designed to slowdown players in order to keep them subscribed for a long time. If you remove all these limitations that are tied to their business model, the player's leveling experience will greatly improve. FFXIV has so much potential locked behind corporate greed.
