I bought a bottle of McCarthy’s a year or two ago and it was delicious. Dirt cheap too. I think it was $39. Very peaty and delicious. It was a thick, meaty peat which I love.

Oregon whiskey represent! Whenever I see Oregon mentioned, I *have* to shill Bull Run Oregon Single Malt. It's not the easiest to get a hold of, but it's amazing! My wife was just visiting Oregon and got me a bottle of their 8 Year Oregon Single Malt Madeira Finish! I've not opened it yet... but will be this weekend!

Hood River is about 50 min drive from Portland. But it's through the Columbia River Gorge as it cuts through the Cascades. The Cascades block much of the clouds and humidity from escaping the Portland side, so the Hood River side is much dryer. Portland is also home to Black Butte malt whiskey (made from stout mash without hops), Westward Whiskey which is also noted for malt, as is Westland a few hours north in Seattle.

I was curious about American single malts and gambled on a couple of McCarthy’s offerings. I’m really happy I did and I’m also very happy on the education about regions.

I'm about to do the EWA cert. Looking forward to it. Didn't realize Daniel had a hand in it. As a Scot, what's funny to me is that geopolitically speaking, EVERY scotch is a Highland, except for Lowlands. And the Islands should probably be their own 6th 'region', but whatever. I like the region partitioning of Scotch. It's somehow comforting. I don't know why.

That's Awesome. I totally agree and understand. In Colorado there are so many Distilleries that dividing by region is better just for traveling. But has NO bearing on the taste. Oh idea: It would be if you could talk about the difference in On the grain vs Off the grain for whiskey Distilling. Super nerdy, but I'd like it. Thank you for another great conversation 🥃😉

Hey Daniel, not sure if you are aware, but Oregon Oak is Garryana, which Westland promotes, as you know. I did not know McCarthy used those barrels. No wonder I love what they put out too!

Ok hear me out, I’ve thought about this a lot because I also love wine and have pushed around the idea of whiskey being more like Champagne, with cuvées (could be NAS or aged to a certain age) and single year vintages. Simultaneously I agree that the current region system is broken and it works better for wine because they are more tied to local land and traditional processes. I’d love to see a variation of the “single” “malt” style of wording to breakout location (as a proxy for climate in aging), ingredients, and traditional process. I haven’t thought of this wording yet but for example Port Charlotte with a vast majority of their barley being local, being in islay, and having a traditionally islay peated style (even though it’s highland peat) would acquire all three designation terms while Bruichladdich would only have 2 (not peated and therefor not traditional islay process). I think it’d encourage more Terrior experimentation and more clearly define to the consumer what the flavor profile will generally be at a glance. Then maybe as regions experiment with new processing they can adopt those into different style designation. *steps off soap box*

Tourism and marketing gymnastics aside, I can see some value to whiskey regions if they were based on climate and inputs, but this would limit creativity. The only regions I need to know about though are whiskey-free regions so I know where not to be.

I also believe regions are utilized for organization purposes. Organizing these distilleries in sectional regions, so it isn’t too confusing or overwhelming for individuals to comprehend.

Ireland has historic provinces, if the "whiskey" regions don't follow this map it's erroneous: Leinster, Ulster, Munster, and Connacht. If they went with a 5th you might be able to say Meath, but that's now just a county in Leinster.

Absolutely disagree. When I go to a store and am looking for a whiskey I have never tried before, I'm absolutely looking for where it's distilled if it's a scotch. If it's Islay, I'm not buying it. While regions are not 100% accurate, they're more than accurate enough to be useful most of the time.

I feel like the regions of Scotland and Ireland as a single region, were developed in the past, when the goal was to make whiskey primarily for the local market. Communication wasn't as great, and while exporting whiskey was a thing, for the most part, people weren't getting so many exotic spirits, unless they were quite worldly. Part of the influence was the tools and methods available in a region, but local preferences were incredibly important. In the US, we have Kentucky Bourbon which has about as narrow a flavor profile as Irish Whiskey. Tennessee Whiskey, also has a fairly narrow profile, and it's not far from Kentucky Bourbon. Those, again, were developed in isolation. Times have changed, though. People are looking to replicate other styles, or they look for inspiration from other styles. The range of the market has expanded, and many regions don't have a clear, established identity. They're further, no longer constrained by local preferences, as shipping and exporting are more accessible than they've ever been. They don't have to appeal to the local market, they just have to appeal to A market, which may, in fact, be distributed all over the country, or the world. So, in 1810, two distilleries next door to each other were likely producing a very similar product, where two neighboring distilleries now might be producing four or five distinct styles, with little to no overlap between the two.
