Much work to do by the next CDS. I’m a 3rd generation member of my family to have worn the uniform. 1967-96. My take is that both our traditional governing parties have diminished our military capabilities. In the 1960s we were a nation of 20 million (?) in 2024 now 40 million (?). Both parties have: 1) reduced the size of our military; 2) failed to replace worn out equipment in a timely fashion; 3) fix a broken procurement process; 4) constantly cut & claw back DND budgets; & 5) treated veterans poorly. I cannot recall when the status of the Canadian military was ever a Canadian voting priority. I cannot recall when either of our 2 traditional governing parties ever connected the dots of Trade with the EU & America to the dots of military alliances NATO & NORAD. Indeed the next CDS has much to, as does the Canadian voter & our traditional governing parties when it come to restoring our military.

Or 3) the Canadian voting public clearly states it has no interest in a modern military & NATO & NORAD. The choice for CDS will do nothing about changing the 'challenging times' for the military. The military has already undergone a transition from which it is most likely to never recover. With organizations such as DEI and 'cultural evolution' firmly entrenched within the military, any new CDS will just roll with it. More often than not, the CDS is a spokesperson of Government imposing the edicts to the troops as opposed to someone firmly standing up for the troops within government. Until the general public understands why a strong military is necessary, nothing beneficial will be done for the military. Sending troops to support NATO or other foreign countries means absolutely nothing to the majority of people in Canada. I am not advocating for it, but, IMHO, a conflict on our soil where Canadian civilians, their way of life, and anything they may value are directly threatened is probably the only way in which the support for our military will grow (ask the Ukrainians, Estonians, or the Moldovans). Of course, at that point in time there will be a massive hue and cry lamenting the lack of military resources, but unfortunately, it may also be too little, too late.

Depending who’s numbers you believe, between 400 to 4000 soldiers left the army immediately after. 458 of those are in lawsuits alleging abuse of authority. The “external” military grievance committee has reported the directive was unreasonable, arbitrary and unlawful. DEI and slacking standards have pissed off the senior members of all ranks and baffled our comrades in NATO. Our equipment procurement is the worst in NATO and the PM running his mouth has led to our reputation and thus our morale are in tatters.

@@1anre There is a long-standing opportunity for Canadians to attend either the US Army Ranger or SF Q Crse (like other foreign students). There appear to be more vacancies on Ranger than the SF Crse. I have met a few offrs who served in the 70s who managed to get on both (very few... usually they were also serving in the Airborne Regt at the time). Off the top of my head I know 2 others who attended the Q Crse from my generation (aside from Gen Eyre). Likely there were more. Of the other 2, neither of them served in a CANSOF capacity. One of them was killed in the middle East when Israel dropped a bomb on his OP o/a 2006 (?). The Canadian equivalent to the Ranger Crse is the Patrol Pathfinder Crse. I have many friends who've done both and say that the Canadian crse is better. Wayne has the medals he has because he has been put into many high-profile positions where he performed well. I'd have to scrutinize his rack again but he has medals for service in Cyprus (which automatically earns one another medal: Peacekeeping Svc medal), some tours in Yugoslvia (which would also earn the CPSM if not already earned elsewhere), Afghanistan, Meritorious Service Medal and Meritorious Service Cross, likely a few Queen's commemorative medals. He also has several foreign medals at the far right of his rack beyond the CAF Decoration (CD). He has more of these than the normal soldier given his service with allies.

@lib556 This is a wealth of good info. Hearing folks state that the Canadian Patrol Pathfinder course is better than the US' Ranger course? Wow. The Americans won't take that sitting down as they praise their Ranger school as being the best leadership and small unit tactics school in their entire army. One would wonder why folks who aren't acting in a special forces capacity like CANSOF would be sent to attend the US' Q course, except eyre was in a recce unit or recce comoany commander etc. But I guess there weren't any special operations regiment during the era when your mates(eyre et al), were taking these specialized courses except say the Airborne Regiment which was maybe stood up around that time. I thought the ribbons(racks of rows) were different from the medals they wear on their no2 uniform and conveyed different things, too, so thought maybe a new policy prevents younger service members while deployed in the last 6-10yrs from weewring their ribbons cause you rarely see it on their uniform, mostly only medals they were when on dinner events and all

You were the anomaly though). I saw men and women promoted because of somebody’s political agenda only to fall on their faces for a lack of skills and experience. The results were as to be expected; division and enmity between former comrades because of perceived special treatment. It is the fault of those ignorant politicians who gave direction not the poor folks who suffered the humility of the fall. It has gotten so annoying to hear constant complaining about change in dress code. Sometimes makes me think that people with similar thinking want to keep the Canadian military an exclusive club instead of a reflection of the Canadian society. Our society is where we will get recruits from if we do not make policies to be inclusive to Canadians we would be left with a very small section of Canada to select recruits from. Even though I vehemently disagree with the tone and tanner and the implicated suggestion of this video, I still appreciate the many videos published by this channel.

@ssrb653 It appears that you don't know and understand the principles and thought processes of the military. Yes -- it is an exclusive job, very exclusive. It is expected that in certain situations the individual is going to be told to conduct certain actions in certain locations that may cost them their life. (Kill or be killed). That is an 'exclusive society'. It is not expected that at that moment one can decide that they don't want to do the task and quit or go home and come back another day because they are stressed. The lives of those working with them will depend on each and every one. This has nothing to do with inclusivity, or diversity or any other buzzword. One would expect that everyone in a military unit, in combat, will work as 'one'. No individuals. A uniform, uniform appearance, uniform response to instruction would probably be an integral part of survival. As for a 'reflection of Canadian society', it depends on how you want to define it. Personally, I think that our government is trying to reflect Canadian society, and that is why our military is in a 'death spiral'.

One the other hand, constant complaining (if you are a surviving member) about a code which has be promulgated by the Chain of Command is indiscipline. I would also like to state that one of our three ethical principle is for us to obey and support lawful authority. The changes to the dress code is being handed down by lawful authority. @@edp8592 I could make the same argument you are making by saying word "Exclusive" is just such much a buzz word as "Inclusive", or "Anti Woke" as much as "Woke". It is a very noble cause to serve your country and one should not put restrictions in order to serve ones country in uniform. Having a bread or not, having nail polish or long hair does not prevent one from being killed or be killed. You may look at plenty of militaries through out history that grew hair and kept beards. You can even look at recent examples in Afghanistan where many NATO troops grew beards. It did not stop them from their operations. Even if we were to say beards prevent a person from their operations the current dress code mandates that they shave it if it becomes an issue to operations. Our military is not in a death spiral because of the past 8 years of the current government. It is the attitude of the public towards the military which has put our military in the current situation. As we are a military that serve a democratic country it is the public through their mandate which would decide how much funding we get and it would be the public at large and their interest that would decide many recruits we would get. Therefore, it is imperative that we reflect the society we defend and we represent the country we guard.

If a simple aptitude test "stresses" out the applicants then imagine what a live fire demo will do. Never mind the possibility of combat. We would be better served by a small number of elite units with superior personnel than wasting time and resources baby sitting a bunch of marginal recruits chosen for their "diversity".

Doing something different is what got this military in a worst state…. cross dressing? Really? Are we looking for a polite military or a military that can fight? Going back to what worked in the old days…..say qualified and skilled soldiers and military personnel is what worked. There is over a thousand years of experience that proves this fact. The only thing I would do differently is PAY THEM, give them real benefits and not the token crap I got when I was in. Canada could look to the US for this and quit asking the ‘woke’ on how they imagine their fashionably ideal military would look like.

There is over a thousand years of experience that proves this fact. The only thing I would do differently is PAY " *The highly effective army of Ukraine proves you wrong.* The Ukraine army is what the CAF must become. There is no other choice. The demographic that has made up soldiers from "the good old days" is done, finished, dwindling into irrelevance.. and any army that relies on them for recruitment will forever be weak and understaffed. That is the NEW reality. Demographics is the ultimate decider and no amount of money will make any long-term difference. Sorry, the last "thousand years of experience" is just not relevant in the demographics of today's world. The CAF has to change. The CAF must align with the demographics of Canadians to remain relevant in the future. Look at what Ukraine's army is made up of... all the people so derided in these comments. Yet, they fight and they fight well. Ukraine had no choice... their demographics are far worse than Canada's. They stopped the historic nonsense, took ALL the people willing to fight, made the best of it, and they are doing far better than anyone expected of them. Yes, the CAF is full of people that don't like this, don't want to be a part of this, and have no intention of staying through the transition, but that transition must happen. It's going to be very ugly. But, if you want qualified people IN the CAF, then you're going to have to substantially widen the demographics being welcomed into it. Get over it.

@@1anre I mean that there are multiple interviews of Ukrainian solders well into the alphabet that are *just soldiers* nobody cares so long as they fight. Obviously gay women leading squads of soldiers, men included. Respected leaders. Obviously overweight solders, old soldiers, geek soldiers... anyone willing to fight. Nobody cares. And, other than being forced into it via invasion, the only way that's going to happen in something like the CAF is that a whole lot of traditions, traditions that only appeal to the traditional CAF recruitment demographic, are going to have to change. This change will, of course, alienate both existing CAF members and the CAF's traditional demographic pool of recruits. Immigrants are only a small part of it. It's the vast majority of Canadians that are so put off by the current CAF traditions that they don't bother even considering enlisting. This is a problem in a lot of countries. Armies are drawing recruits from a shrinking demographic. There are a lot of people that would sign up for the positives if the stupid negatives were tossed, negatives like being told how to cut their toenails. That CAF isn't ready because they don't have the people to maintain their equipment. The plane is sitting in the hanger for lack of a tech when there are plenty of crazy people that would love to work on something cool like a fighter jet, but the purple hair and tats come first. So, the plane sits. No one to deploy with it to Romania or wherever. No mission. Why even bother buying new planes?

Archer shoot and scoot artillery was also recommended, as is the need to manufacture Leopard 2 tanks in Canada much like the LAVs. hover craft once used by the coast guard need to be re introduced to help resupply northern bases and aid in flood situations. As far as a female CDS goes, the men have been messing it up for a long time. Hell, go for it. Can it get any worse? Changing short hair for pink hair will not help with CAF numbers. Retention and picking the right CMs that LISTENS to the members goals will go a long way. Finally, take care of the veterans. Positive word of mouth from a veteran will help the CAF.

Veterans travails have been an issue unlike in the US and I believe part of that is because basic Canadians don’t really care or respect their military. I don’t understand the backlash over abolishing the CFAT for some occupations. I applied for Signal Officer, I have a Master’s Degree in Computer Science Management. It felt weird for me to do a Grade 8 level exam. I got 59/60, not even a close call. So many occupations, even more those receiving CFAT exemption, require some level of academic achievement. I feel CFAT lose relevance as those enroled have largely demonstrated those abilities. While skipping CFAT for « stress » is not a good sign, skipping it for bureaucratic relevance is, in my opinion. Could still be applied voluntarily for career orientation purposes. Can anyone guide me understand?
