Here is the problem with picking OKC over Boston… OKC has the talent, but lacks the experience. They are very similar to how Boston was a few years ago, talented enough but had no seasoning. OKC is still very young, and they don’t have the playoff experience of a team like Boston. They haven’t built up their playoff scar tissue yet. They’re a few years away from title contention. Let them get past Round 2 before you anoint them title winners.

@justap7164

Can’t forget about Dallas. When it comes to the playoffs, I think Dallas will keep beating them there in the end to get to the next round. Both teams got better this offseason, but I think Dallas is still the overall better team and already found good replacements for the guys they lost this offseason. Picking OKC over Dallas to go to the finals and beat Boston there seems extremely unrealistic, and I think Dallas has more of a better chance on going back to the finals and getting revenge on Boston for losing the finals against them last season since they found better shooters this offseason which they lacked in the finals and lost the series in the end, more than their defense. I think both teams will finish as the 1 and 2 and meet each other in the WCF, but I think Dallas will win again in another close 6 game series. OKC needs more playoff experience to get to where the Mavs are now to be talking about having a chance at winning a title and so far they’re nowhere near that level and I think the media and fans are getting way too ahead of themselves there when discussing who’s gonna win the title in that conversation by picking OKC. They do have a promising future, but they’ll need to keep losing in the playoffs to have more experience to get to the final stage like Boston and Dallas to win it all. Scary team for next season in the regular season without a doubt, but still lacks experience that sets them back. As a Mavs fan, they shouldn’t be underestimated, and they’ll be better than last season if fully healthy.
@LucianoCantabruel

@@justap7164 people forgot that Mavs beat Boston 84 - 122 in the fourth game, because that day they actually shoot threes. Mavs was the only team in the post season that kept Boston to a close match in offrtg and defrtg, and they did that without Naji, without Grimes and this year they’ll have a Lively not a rookie anymore, after being the main reason why Dallas had such a superb defensive rating the last four months including the playoffs
@justap7164
4 күн бұрын
@@LucianoCantabruel yeah. Still don’t buy what people said that Boston lost on purpose that game to win at home, because logically it would make more sense to make sure the other team doesn’t come out that series winning one game and get the series over with sooner by sweeping them that same series to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy. From a logical standpoint that loss on Boston was because they let their guard down that game and it ended up allowing Dallas to get the upper hand and win just that game, but Boston would learn from mistake and close out the series in 5 games by playing better defense and offense the next game. Lack of shooter hurt Dallas more significantly than defense that series, but they already found replacements in DJJ, THJ, and Green with Naji, Klay, and Grimes this offseason and brought back Dinwiddie who played a key role in getting Dallas to the WCF in 2022 against Golden State where they would lose the series in the end. I think Dallas may have better chances to possibly face Boston in the finals now if both make it back there and face each other, and could possibly win in a 7 game series if they play more better offensively and defensively. I think they’ll put up more of a fight against Boston than OKC will just because they’re already experienced to the kind of team Boston was in the finals and them bringing back that whole core could help Dallas find more ways to get the upper hand on them than OKC will and I think people don’t seem to realize that and believe OKC can beat them in the end when the lack of playoff experience for them just doesn’t seem very likely

@@justap7164 So there’s no basketball argument against OKC? The only thing yall said is they don’t have experience. That’s a cop out if we’re being honest bc on the court & paper they clearly have the best team in the West. They don’t have to keep losing before they win 😂 There’s no set requirement on how much experience a team needs before they can win. And they are clearly better than the Mavs. If PJ shot normally like he always has before OKC wins that series even with OKC shooting well below their average. They added 2 HIGH quality role players that fit their scheme and got rid of a clear negative without losing any assets. So for BASKETBALL reasons please explain why OKC can’t win?

@givenchauke3125 One of the main reasons we lost to Dallas is that we had no shot creators. So adding Randle and div in those non ant gives us a better and more dynamic offense. Div has proven himself in the playoff, Rudy is rudy, and mcdaniels has proven rise in the playoffs in which he has averaged over 40% from three on 4 attempts per game. So those if those three attempts increases he can make himself a threat. Plus he has multiple 20+ p games in playoffs easily replacing the production from kat. Then randle who is not a great shooter can easily create for himself and other off his drives alone. He has worked with other non spacing bigs who are just as bad or even worst the rudy on offense. Plus he can unlock ant off ball offense making the the game easier for ant. And randle has worked with chis finch before, so that Transition to work could be shorter the kat and rudy combination.

Despite being a Mavs fan, I feel like Mavs at 4 below the Knicks is a pretty fair placement for one key reason: whoever is going to win is probably going to have to beat Boston to do it, and I think the Knicks are better placed to do that than the Mavs. Boston were a matchup nightmare for us in the Finals, and I don't think that's changed. The fact that Boston can play five-out offence, undermining the biggest strength of our defensive scheme, without creating any clear defensive liabilities for Luka and Kyrie to hunt, means that the Mavs have to play against Boston in a fundamentally different way to basically every other team in the league - most teams have to put at least one significantly below average defender on the floor to play five out. This then puts pressure on other Mavs to be able to create shots, which we really don't have the personnel for, and puts a lot of defensive pressure on Luka and Kyrie who, while not cones (despite Luka's reputation from early in his career), are league average defenders at best. Boston highlights Dallas's shortcomings and diminishes their strengths. The Knicks, on the other hand, have the personnel to at least make things awkward for Boston, assuming that Thibs can extract passable defence from KAT. If it's Knicks vs Mavs in the Finals, I'd pick the Mavs to win, both on depth and with the confidence that Luka and Kyrie could hunt KAT off the floor and then smother the Knicks defensively once they can't play five-out, or that the Mavs would win the offensive shoot-out if they left him in. However, I think that ranking based on ability to beat Boston is the more important criterion, because any contender is probably going to have to do so.
@christopherforrest5713

Knicks are going to struggle against teams with a strong interior offensive presence (ie OKC) and despite Mavs new additions Knicks are flat out the better defensive team. I don’t know can Mavs close out games with Klay Kyrie and Luka all sharing the floor. That said obviously Mavs have the best player (and arguably the 3rd best) in the series. It would definitely go to 6 for either team
@ryanmuller9497
2 сағат бұрын
@@christopherforrest5713 I think that, by the end of the season, the Mavs' will be closing games with Klay on the bench against all but the flimsiest offences. I like Klay as an upgrade over THJ in a sixth man role, but I think we'll end up closing with Lively, PJ, one of Naji or Grimes, Kyrie (or, maybe Klay in very specific matchups), and Luka - basically the way we closed last year with Naji or Grimes taking DJJ's place and occasionally Klay in Kyrie's place. The Knicks might have better defensive personnel, but with that structure last year the Mavs were still a lethal defensive team against pretty much anyone not from Boston (and still managed to hold Boston below their season ORtg in the Finals, our ORtg was just far, far worse), so I don't think it's fair to say the Knicks are flat out defensively better. Mavs made the playoff run built on being an elite defensive team with just enough pure offence from Luka and Kyrie to win more games than not. As for a hypothetical series between the Knicks and the Mavs and the Knicks, I'd fairly comfortably pick Mavs in 5 or 6. Maybe that's just my Mavs fan bias coming through, but I don't see the Knicks matching up well against the Mavs. Apart from Lively, Gafford, and Luka meaning that the Mavs are a team with fairly strong interior offensive presence, I just can't see a team with KAT and Brunson on the floor not being an absolute feast for Luka and Kyrie attacking in general.

If going into March, the clippers look better than the Warriors, they might shut Steph down.

I think the Celtics and Thunder are both exceptional to the rule in terms of being able to repeat in the modern NBA. The Celtics have been able to retain all their players rather than having their roster gutted in FA. The Thunder have the draft capital to continue to retool/improve, so even if they lose an important piece in FA they can the draft capital to trade for a replacement.

If OKC win it this year I think they could definitely repeat, and be even more likely than even Boston could this year. OKC is just so young all around and in another year their core will be even better with SGA being 27, JDub being 24 and Chet at 23 gives them so much time to improve (which is really scary). Plus all of their players are under contract for years to come with the only exception being AC who will probably be extended if they win this year. With all that being said I actually don't know how I feel about them winning it all this year, I still think experience could hurt them especially against Boston. I feel very confidently though, that in 2026 they will win the title & potentially another one before the 2020's are done.

Not even a Celtics fan (i am just a basketball fan with no favourite team), but the only think stopping them from repeating are themselfs. If you gotta rank the best team in the NBA, Boston is 1st by a large margin and then you run down the list. I mean i don't think i gotta say anything about their starting 5. They literally looked liked the best team in the NBA without KP as well. Then if you look at the bench you have Pritchard you can go for 30 any given night and other really good role players. People saying they are not repeating, cause this haven't happened in a long time which btw is a stupid way to approach this, cause it doesnt work like that. You can't convince me that if you had to bet everything you have on the 2025 champs right now that you wouldn't go with Boston.

Absolutely not. I would say they're the most complete roster, but they're not first "by a large margin". The problem with them repeating is that EVERY. SINGLE. TEAM that they played had their best player injured. Even Luka, who was the only #1 option who actually played the majority of his series against the Celtics, was clearly hurt. We genuinely haven't seen them play against a contender-level team yet.

He's almost certainly a significant upgrade on THJ, which is the roster spot he's filling (with Naji replacing DJJ and Grimes replacing Green). THJ would go on the occasional hot shooting stretch, but by and large made a lot of bad decisions with the ball, was often a defensive liability, and heaved up far too many bricks. If Klay comes in and shoots league average from 3 most nights and every few games catches fire, defends league average, and carries over his GSW system knowledge of making the right pass, he's already a huge upgrade on THJ. Anything better than that is a nice bonus. I'm not sure that Klay will still be starting by the end of the season, depending largely on exactly how shaky the defence gets without a lockdown perimeter defender in the starting five, but as someone you can bring on the floor to feed off wide open looks created by Luka and/or Kyrie, he should be a valuable weapon.

The reason you didn't put Boston at number 1 in power ranking, seems to mostly be a logical error. There is no contradiction between thinking Boston likely won't repeat and also thinking Boston is the most likely team to win in power ranking. One is comparing the odd of Boston against odds of non-Boston (Thunder, 76ser, Bucks, Denvor, Mav, and so on all combined). The other is comparing Boston with any individual team. Kobe & Shaq lakers was so above competitions that their chance can be better than all the rest combined. They likely repeat. However, if there is one team that is better than everyone else, but is not close to be better than all the rest's odd combined, then they are not likely to repeat despite being the best team. The modern NBA is so talented that the power difference of the top teams are not as drastic as the old days, like the MJ bulls or Kobe Shaq lakers (when there is a lot of something, things tend to average out more). 73-win warriors+KD is one pathologically exception.

If it's true that the Wolves are starting Randle instead of Naz, then I can see why you're skeptical about the Wolves. If they start Naz Reid instead, then you are absolutely wrong for putting them as the 9th best contender. If Naz starts they are the top team in the west and 2nd best contender.

@ryanmuller9497
4 күн бұрын
Any contender will be lower ranked without their best player, but some top level contenders would still be contenders without their best player. The most obvious example here is Boston, who could lose Tatum (or Brown, if you happen to be in the Brown>Tatum camp for whatever reason) and would still be not just a contender, but a fairly strong one. Similarly, I think you could replace SGA with a league average point guard and the Thunder would still be a contender, albeit probably bottom of this list level. So, even if you think most contenders would fall out of contention by losing their best player, it's still meaningful to point out that a supposed high level contender depends so much on their best player that they clearly wouldn't contend without him.
