Why is it that no one ever compares a monophonic synth to any other monophonic instrument such as a sax, or flute or even Miles Davis’ trumpet? One note does not limit, but invites the ultimate creativity.

If you're talking about affordable monophonic synths, I don't think that you can do much better than the Arturia Microbrute and Minibrute (and later versions). It's got an aggressive yet highly sculptable sound that punches way above the price point.

Meh...me, personally, I don't like semi modular synths. I prefer a synth like the bass station II where all the sound design can easily be done on the panel. The minibrute is fine but you really get the most out of it when using the patch bay, something I'm not a fan of.

Hmmm... why a monosynth and how to decide which one NOT here. There are 3 primary reasons and 1 secondary to get a mono/para. A comparable build quality and voice architecture in a poly will cost more; often a LOT more. There are MANY desirable patches in all types of music which are inherently mono in nature. Gain staging in a mono tends to be easier to design & use and can offer patching options difficult or impossible on a poly. (Models with high quality opamps, even discrete on a rare few, can provide musically very useful feedback and overdrive/saturation patching rarely as accessible or manageable if even present on a poly) Finally, simplicity though this is less clear as there are modern complicated mono synths and modern "classic" style relatively straightforward poly synths. The first thing to decide with any synth is budget. Then decide how important to you are patch storage, onboard effects, paraphony, knob-per-function vs. menu diving, desktop/rack or keybed (number of octaves, quality, aftertouch, key size), onboard arp and/or sequencer (and ease of use if present), and how much you care if it is analog or digital or hybrid. Fix the budget and rank each of those then go comparison shopping.

Something to keep in mind as well is that there are a ton of samplers (whether they are plugins or hardware like the MPC). It is fairly easy to turn a monosynth into a polysynth. So if you have a concern about polyphony, there are ways around it. They aren’t absolutely perfect but they are good hybrid options. This is also a good way to get “presets” when the synth doesn’t have any

I'm happy with the Korg Monologue. It has a sequencer that you can program live and erase on the fly. Perfect for improve techno jams.

Why??? He failed to explain why buy a monosynth when we can use almost any polysynth in mono mode. Is it just price? There are cheap and expensive mono and poly synths. So, the good question remains: why? What are the advantages of a monosynth in this day and age?

A monophonic synthesizer has a richer sound.

The Pro 3 is probably your best option in terms of long term investment in your music. While the price might seem prohibitive to newcomers, it is going to give you the widest scope of sounds and features that were distilled from five decades of Dave Smith’s experience and customer input and want lists. You aren’t going to use it for a few months and find yourself limited by creative options with such an extensive tool box.

I own 10 synths, most of which are polyphonic but my Roland/Studio Electronics SE02 monophonic is an absolute joy to play. Sound designing a la Moog (sort of) is half the enjoyment. And being able to save presets is something I wished my MiniMoog had (years ago which I stupidly sold)

I think all the different recommendations given here shows that there's plenty of good choices, but for me the Bass Station 2 has been really hard to beat just for features (and it sounds great too!) It has even been so flexible that I several years later can't justify having another analogue mono, it just kinda does it all.

I like that my Microfreak has the option to play in 4-note paraphony but I spend a lot of time jamming in monophonic mode because the sound is much richer. It makes me feel like I'm doing a sweet lead guitar solo.

I love my monosynths, but the video and title seemed mismatched: The video didn't really answer the question of why to get a monosynth, and didn't really provide a guide for choosing one.

Almost every KZitem video of this kind that has questionmark in the title results in dissapointment, I find. We barely ever get a decent answer to it... I suppose it gets extra clicks though, as we expect it to answer something that was on our mind, however fleeting.
@Borey567

The answer is there, maybe not pronounced well. In monosynth several oscillators form the sound. Wich is rare for polysynth.

Usually poly analog synths thin the sound out to prevent it from becoming muddy, but that makes it weaker for single note bass and lead lines. There's a few exceptions, but the complexity and price is usually out of reach.
@ToyKeeper

@@s.gharavi1614 Yeah, that's similar to how I usually explain it. Mono synths are built so one note fills the spectrum, while poly synths are built so several notes share the spectrum. But each can sort of fill the role of the other.
@s.gharavi1614

@@ToyKeeper I've layered monos, but honestly it ends up sounding too muddy. And I've tried using the mono settings on poly synths and they're still too thin. If enough of an overlap was engineered, then one would cannibalize the other and we wouldn't have both options. I didn't think that will happen. As it is even my SE-02 and Matriarch, both which are mono analogs, can't replicate each other, let alone a poly. But some people don't really hear the difference between any of this. At that level, even vst plugins are pretty close.
