you know how light leaves a spot on your eye for a few minutes? could that be why deer freeze? could their eyes be more sensitive and the spot lasts longer and they just simply cant see so they dont move?
@Accrovideogames
5 ай бұрын
Yes, that's exactly it. Deer eyes are extremely sensitive to light and take forever to adjust. They freeze because it's safer to stay in place than risk moving while blind. Unfortunately, this instinct backfires when cars are involved. When they hear a car approaching, they look in the direction of the sound and get blinded by headlights. They don't know that it's safer to move out of the way in this situation. It's not something that happens naturally in their habitat, so they didn't learn the correct behavior. Obviously, this doesn't happen during daytime. Since they don't get blinded by headlights, they're able to see the car as a threat and move out of the way. If cars weren't such a rare occurrence in their habitat, they would learn to avoid the road during nighttime. If that wasn't an option, they would at the very least stop looking in the direction of the car when crossing the road and quickly move out of the way. In the event that they accidentally get blinded by headlights, they would know that staying there is dangerous, so they would totally risk getting a minor injury by running away from the road. It's best to trip on a bump or run headfirst into a tree when the only alternative is to almost surely get hit by a large and fast moving heavy object.
@gamma_centauri

@@AccrovideogamesAdding a minor tidbit to this for anyone interested, but I believe deer eyes have two light absorbing layers within, and when light enters, it bounces around between the layers before settling. So if this turning the sharks upside down stuns them perhaps it could help someone who’s under attack from one?.
