You're 1000% correct in that statement. You absolutely need to reevaluate your parenting technique and probably revive it. As a childhood competitive dance who did it for 13 years I have to say I don't think it's just the moms. Dance teachers can be toxic as hell and when your at the studio literally 40 hours a week you see them more then your parents at times. Obviously they're then going to have a ton of influence on you and (especially as a child) you want to appease them. Pitting students against eachother is something a lot of coaches or instructors do in competitive environments as a way to push them and it creates huge problems for adulthood. By doing that your basically creating a personality thats going to go on to have major self esteem issues, or atleast that was my expirience and that's all I can really comment on. It's incredibly toxic and this whole show honestly bring back big points of trauma for myself. When I started watching it here and there in 2017 maybe It made me realize how dysfunctional my own expirience was in the dance world. This show was a mix of a lot of toxic things together; competition, show business, reality television ect and then sprinkled on these poor impressionable and innocent children on top of it to endure it all. It really does bother me.

Going though all the seasons was like watching your own kids grow up, and when you go back to the early seasons and saw them still young and happy and had dreams to become dancers, and it hurts you knowing the outcome. Like you said, this show really have impact on people, especially watching as a parent who has young kids to raise. Yeah, I used to do gymnastics for fun. Because obviously I was a little kid I didn’t wanna be professional or anything. I can barely remember the time I spent there, but I remember a lot of yelling and bellittlement towards me, and also banning me from coming to the group for being ‘rude’ (which was really just questioning them, because people in authority are often so full of themselves they think they can’t be wrong apparently, and autistic traits). They told me off for not being flexible, rather than asking why I couldn’t bend that far. Which I now know was likely tightened muscles due to hyper mobility. Not that they ever asked *why* I couldn’t get into the splits, just telling me off because ‘everyone else could do it’. They also told me off for trying to make friends. I think I was probably 5-7 yrs old. Luckily, they’re now getting less people going to their group. People have come out about the teachers pushing their children into splits and abusive language. I’m glad I stopped going there, I can’t count how many times I cried to my mum about it (though she didn’t listen to me)

I cry when Im angry and can't express how I feel properly (Im 31 and just now am able to stand up for myself without lashing out, and still cry). So when you're 12 can't stand up to the adults because you're 12 and will be shut down to stop being a brat. Constantly being compared to your peers. Going through biological changes that come with puberty, under such stress and pressure, not to mention your physical body changing on national television(and being shamed for it). No wonder these girls were crying all the time. I cried all the time without a monster dance coach, stage mom and being on tv.

Kenzie won that one fair and square. Yes, Abby had her looking like a little kid but the tricks she did in that routine were AMAZING. It was nonstop and she hit on everything. Maddie did a tap routine in that competition and tap doesn't usually win against dances that have more bells and whistles--and Kenzie's routine was nothing but bells and whistles. In addition, Abby plopped her hair piece on top of Maddie's head and it looked terrible and was horribly distracting during the dance. Kenzie deserved the win.

Everyone hates on Jess & JoJo mainly because their rocky relationship with Ashlee & Brynn or the fact they’re still friends with Abby, but I will say, they were the only ones who stood up for Holly & Nia in Season 5 & 6. Jess also stood up for Mackenzie & Kalani against Abby and their mothers and she tried to help the team when Abby stormed out having a tantrum. I feel like with Jess, people either love her or hate her (similar to Christi) and I’d love to hear your thoughts on moms like Jess, Kira, Camille, Jaime, Kristie Ray, Christ-y, the mini moms, the season 8 moms, etc in a part 3!

Honestly, I’m kind of on and off about Melissa. On one hand, I completely understand where you’re coming from about her. Yes, a lot of her actions do come off as ‘stage-mom’ ish and there are some things that can’t be scripted/that heavily edited. However, on the other hand, Mackenzie said herself in her book (which had no read through or anything from Melissa) that Melissa always treated them equally and understood that they were different people and shouldn’t be compared, and claimed that Melissa was the one to comfort her whenever she got upset because of the comparisons and told her that she had her own accomplishments and not to worry about anyone else’s. There have also been speculations that the statement Melissa said about Mackenzie not deserving to beat Maddie was actually only a part of what she said - that apparently she also mentioned a part about the choreography and how Maddie’s choreography was more advanced compared to Mackenzie’s childish acro choreography. This makes sense and ties in to a bit of what she said. And while I agree that Melissa should’ve defended both of her kids more, I feel like she didn’t defend them to protect them, if that makes sense. Notice how all of the moms who defend their kids, they are kids get the most abused? For example, Christi was the most outspoken mother and always spoke out for Chloe and Chloe was undoubtedly treated the worst. I think that Melissa kept quiet to avoid Abby‘s rage falling upon her children. Abby has a terrible habit of taking her anger on the moms out on the kids and Melissa knew that. There have been some times when Melissa tried to stand up for her kids, but her kids told her to be quiet because they knew that if Melissa spoke out for them, then they would get yelled at even more. That was seen when she stood up for Mackenzie in Season 5 and Mackenzie told her to be quiet and looked scared. I have a feeling that Melissa thought she was doing the right thing by staying quiet and obedient to Abby. She knew that she was trapped under Abby because of the contract, and like most abused children, in order to stop from from getting the blunt of the abuse, she stayed silent and took advantage of the situation, and then started to speak back and threw Abby out of her life when they were no longer trapped under her and Abby had no control over them anymore. Unfortunately, by doing that, Melissa didn’t realize that she was exposing her kids to emotional manipulation. By trying to take her kids out of one frying pan, she put them into another. I don’t think she had bad intentions as a mother, although I agree that she definitely made some mistakes, instead I think that she just didn’t really know what to do and went with her gut instinct.

Abby refused to do anything to promote or further Nia's career. So rather than just accept it, Holly used her connections and got Nia's song and video produced and it ended up being better than Kendall's. The whole attitude from Jill and Abby was despicable. They were legit pressed because Nia managed to succeed DESPITE the roadblock Abby tried to create. Not only did she succeed, she excelled. More importantly she did it without any help from Abby which was a further kick in the crotch to Abby. Also, Nia and Holly had control over her music whereas Jill and Kendall were at Abby's mercy. Abby supposedly had a lot more music for Kendall that she refused to release for the longest time--IDK if she ever released it. That whole situation was messed up. Remember Nia did a performance somewhere and the only people who showed up were Jojo and her mom? So messed up...

I think part of the reason they ended up so well adjusted is similar to my own abuse. My father was similar to Abby, he yelled just to yell. It was glaringly obvious even at a young age to me that my behaviour had nothing to do with it. I learned instead how to avoid getting in trouble by assessing his mood and hiding when he was upset/irritable and only asking for things when I knew he was in a great mood. It caused a bunch of other issues for me, but I didn’t like go off the rails or anything. If anything I actively knew what was happening was wrong and fought the narrative that I’d have a breakdown or do drugs or some shit, I basically became the perfect teen in an attempt to leverage my way out of my own situation.

I recently graduated university and have been re-watching the show as someone who has lived in the professional performing arts world for a few years. I have super mixed feelings about the show, I have always thought that it was horrible for the children so that hasn’t changed. Abby... I might be giving her too much slack because I had lymphoma around the same time that Abby did, and seeing her contour her life post cancer is kind of inspiring to me, because I have had a lot of physical set backs, but I’m also someone who is trying to establish a career in the arts. When re-watching the show, I actually find myself agreeing with some of her tough-love, grow a thick skin method BUT i only think it’s a good way to deal with adults in the field, and is HORRIBLE for young children. I think that the producers and editors did a ton of shit, but there are things that are just inexcusable. This thought process of “why can’t you let them chill on dancing” doesn’t fit this narrative. If you don’t want your kid to have dance be a focus or make it a career, do dance classes. Don’t put them on a competition team. That is a complete different environment. That was what frustrated me with Holly, Christy, and Kelly when it came to how they handled solos or criticism. Not everyone is made to be in a competition atmosphere.

you make a great point!! Even though Abby was awful majority of the time, I think she made was honest when they weren't take corrections/weren't keeping up. Most of the moms on that show were stage moms, so they really wanted their kids to get ahead at the expense of their children's mental health.
