Easier said then done. Many that buy a car aren't online and many get so excited to have it now than wait that they'll pay whatever it takes to get it. Dealers would have to stop markups if people didn't pay them, but since they haven't stopped markups, at least some percentage of people are still paying them. The better question is would you pay a dollar over MSRP to get the car you want first? If yes, there's almost certainly someone that would pay $1.01 and that's where the markup comes from.

Automatic transmissions are more reliable than manual trannies, a manual is only cheaper to service/replace and requires skill to operate, the automatic takes no skill to function properly. Even the CEO of the company said "Anyone who buys a brand new MB or BMW is a complete idiot, those are only good for leasing when new." Out of all the cars listed, only the Kia is the kind of a car that's okay to buy brand new, as it doesn't depreciate in value the same way the other cars do, after a year or two of ownership and 5-10k miles driven. Meanwhile makes like Opel will lose 70% of their value the minute you sign the paper.

The amount of people that walk into a car dealership and kneecap their own future...on the daily...is WILD.
@noahmcdaniel4920

Nothing under 60k is kneecapping anyone's future. If you're so broke that the opportunity cost of depreciation vs investing is making a significant difference you didn't have much of a future to begin with. I mean, it all comes down to knowing what you're getting into and whether or not it's worth it to you. Many don't, and are surprised at the costs. People are blowing just as much money on eating out, vacationing, golfing, etc as you do buying a new car every 3-4 years.

@emb647 lol whatever you say bud. You don't have to explain anything. I'll say it again. If a car depreciating 20-30k over 4 or 5 years ruined your financial future, you didn't have one to begin with. Especially when any reasonably reliable used car would have depreciated upwards of $10k anyway. Like I said, if investing as much as you possibly can is more important to you than having a nice car, or your income is low enough that you're worried about monthly expenses or even being able to retire, get the used prius. But an extra $10-20k of depreciation over a half decade isn't kneecapping anyone unless they were already on pace for a late, uncomfortable retirement or never retiring to begin with, and you can blow just as much money on any number of other unnecessary things. An extra $250/mo on eating out will hit you just as hard over the long term as buying a new car instead of a used one. If you're such a frugal head, be as passionate about people eating out a few times a week instead of eating rice and chicken every meal as you are about not buying new cars.

With interest, a $20k car will end up costing $40k, and by the time its paid off, will be worth $10k. So, a $40k investment for a $10k vehicle is the definition of stupid.

I agree wholeheartedly. My car from the 2010s has 3 garage buttons, recently I was looking at some newer cars and realized almost none of them had garage buttons anymore. I figured out later that it was because the garage features were being integrated with everything else into the screen! Such a cheap method for car companies to skimp out. In 2005 I went shopping for a nice little sports car. Of all the cars I test drove, hands down the best was the Audi TT 3.2L Quattro DSG. It was one of only 2 cars made with the dual clutch gearbox, which just smoked every other marque’s auto shift manual tech at the time. Sticker price in 2005 was $65k. I asked the dealer, “ Does Audi Lease these cars?” He said yes. I said, “See you in TWO YEARS”. 2 years later I found one returned from lease in the most sought after color that had been leased by a young woman with only 14k miles on it. She hadn’t raced it, but like most young women, had simply driven it at a high rate of speed everywhere she went- which is the perfect break in profile for that engine/trans combo. $32k. Half price. 18 years later, Its still my daily driver. Don’t EVER buy a ‘NEW’ expensive car. 2 years later they are JUST as good and half as much.

Cars keep getting more features too; base models now include things that used to be options we had to pay for. Many car makers have been floundering in terms of profits, and they don't profit much on cars that sell for $35,000 new, so there's little for them to sell affordable vehicles.

I learned my lesson on cars back in 2009. My lease on my 06 Ram was up, and I was about to get married so I was looking for something more practical. Bought a brand new 2009 Ford Edge Limited. This was the first year of the Microsoft Connect feature. You couldn't get another option on this thing. So as I'm signing the papers I asked the dealer what's the difference between this and the Lincoln version??? He said badging and $15,000 more. They're just cars, nothing more. I can understand a classic, rare, or exotic, but after that, they're pretty much all the same. Having worked as an electrician for 5 years in a major assembly plant, I used to get a laugh out of downplaying when coworkers would buy a new Ram or Charger. Oh you got a new Ram??? Wow just like thousands of other a$$holes, you're not special and neither is your overpriced truck.
