Humans are fundamentally motivated to both seek pleasure and avoid pain. Many people get into fitness to first avoid pain. They want to “fix” something about their body or they want to avoid a negative consequence like getting fat or sick.
Fear-based motivation is a great short-term way to get going, but it’s a terrible long-term motivation tool. It’s much more productive to seek good things rather than avoiding bad things in both life and fitness.
