Do you think getting bodied is good or bad for you?
@thetrueinsaniac
2 жыл бұрын
Definitely bad. I got bodied one time by this really good player at my school, like literally three stocked, and when I got home I started playing so bad on quickplay, I must have lost like two million GSP just from being so demoralized. Conversely when you win against someone who's very good, especially if you beat them quite badly, then your confidence goes up and your fundies improve significantly.

One of the things I do after a long sets, tourney, or practice session is to play some random fun ruleset I find or create. Helps cool you down and bring you down a notch while reminding yourself this game can be really fun

I completely gave up playing smash, no matter how many hours I sink into the game I just can’t improve. Beginners beat me, and I get bodied by tryhards. It’s rare if I get a win. I’m tired of never improving. Tried and tried for years. Done with this frustration. Glad you make this video

Really late...but the issue here is super clear; you only have one. The issue is that you don't know what you're doing wrong. And if you don't know what you're doing wrong, you'll never improve beyond reflexes, and you'll only get frustrated. Also, don't use GSP as a marker. There are people at two or three million GSP that are better than people at 8 or 9 million GSP. It's an average, but not really much better than that.

"Getting bodied is a mindset"--well said. I think some people are able to get more out of constant losses because they can get dopamine out of smaller goals--taking someone consistently better than you to the last stock, or taking a single stock off of a really tough opponent, or making it visibly harder for them to get away with the same thing they did to you last time. But others can't help but feel frustrated if the final screen doesn't show them winning sometimes. If you've got this problem with the buddies you play with most often, try using the game's in-built damage handicap. The stronger player will have to play tighter, and the weaker player will get enough dopamine to have fun and keep playing.

My advice: If you find yourself never winning a single match out of the past twenty, take a break from the game to refresh your mindset. I tried it and saw better in-game results. How about you?

Came here after watching the recent video. I grew up playing fighting games with jerks who pushed me to keep challenging them over and over again in order to get better. I was trolled, heckled, and bullied...no fun. Eventually lost interest in competitive altogether. This encouraged me to give fighting games another go.
@trebmal587

So I have a few things to say about that. Even, if losing can be frustrating, as long as you don't get totaly bodied, you still learn more than by winning. Winning a match tells you that what you are already doing is working, at least against your current opponent. Losing a match tells you that what you are doing is insufficient, it show you the flaws in your game plan, what kind of archetypes you're struggling against, etc... As long as you're trying to put your ego aside and to acknowledge your short comings, they're is definitely more to learn there. But yeah, of course, if you get way too tilted, you won't be able to keep that analytic view of the game. I use to get tilted a lot playing Smash in the past, but in the last 6 months, since I joined my local competitive scene and realised there are people way over my league, my mentality changed. I accepted that as long as I will be playing Smash, I will lose sometimes, there is nothing that can be done about it. Doing what you can to not get tilted by it is the best way to progress IMO, and it provide a healthier mindset for everyone involved. And when despite that I feel the salt rushing through my body after getting eliminated from a bracket, I just say to myself "It's okay. Some players might judge me for it, but whatever. In the long run, loses get you further than wins. So... what did I do wrong ?". An other thing to considere is the mentality of the person who is bodying you. In my local scene, there are a lot of talented players that are... way too cocky and condescending about it. Not only will they beat you, but they will start spamming the same moves over and over when they see that you're getting tilted, they will taunt, Tbag, etc... On the other hand there are also equally talented players who will try their best to help you realise your mistakes, give you tips to improve, congratulate you whenever you start getting better on an aspect of the game, etc... Even tho they are destroying you just as hard, the mood they are setting is way better to help you progress. If you play with someone way below your level, be that kind of guy, you were there at some point. Anyway, if you're someone who gets tilted thinking being harsh with yourself is how you're supposed to act to progress, don't, it's not.

I think.... I legitimately needed to hear this... I consider myself trash at Ultimate a lot due to getting beat out a LOT in ways where as you said, cortizol is being pumped out a lot... Its like my life with this game at this point. So i see now that I need to stop playing with my friend. He actually suggested putting me in a server with people around my level and I turned him down thinking if I keep going vs him I can beat him... Our last match together... I played the most campy defensive style I could and I won... I felt relief but.... It wasn't fun....This video seriously put it into perspective... I get it now... Thanks.

I feel like it makes sense to try new characters against the cpus first anyway. It gives us more time to relax and experiment with what works and what doesn't. Plus the way I see it, if you can't consistently win against a predictable cpu how much sense does it make to simply let yourself get bodied online?

I feel like this just... Isn't true. At least, to a certain extent. I agree with you, if it's the case you mentioned of "If they trap you in a combo the entire game and don't let you play neutral" , the. Yeah, if it's that extreme, then you won't get anything out of it. But it's okay to train against people you can't take a game off of. Hell, against people you can't take a stock off of. But, it has to always be somebody you can talk to about the game. At lower level, it's exponentially easier to get better compared to higher levels. Learning 1 interaction can make you double the player. So if the player you're talking to can explain to you how they are exploiting and reading you like a book, you can get so much better that way. Or if you watch your vods afterward. Save replays, and see if you can find anything consistent about how they are beating your ass

Nothing better than not being able to do anything due to the other using the same move over and over again and due to your character, you can't counter it. There's no skill to smash, either mash or you'll lose

There was a Core-A gaming video that puts this into perspective, there are 2 thing you need to do to get good, practice getting bodied, and practice bodying other people, both have great benefits, mainly getting bodied forces you to work of stuff like disadvantage, neutral, obvious habits, and just general stuff like that, bodying teaches you advantage state, and tests what level your autopilot is at, if you want to get good, the this game works, both are required, playing people your skill level is good, but it doesn’t help strengthen these 2 areas as much

Usually I get pretty damn violent when stuff like this happens.. I remember when this happened irl in a soccer game: We were losing 20-3, and I’ve noticed that the opposite team were not only scoring like hell but also physically pushing down my teammates, as if the score wasn’t enough to pop my cap. When the play was stopped I was so pissed that I motioned a roundhouse kick to land straight on my opponent’s chest, the same opponent who was the roughest on my teammates. The kick didn’t connect, but the intent was real. After that, I’ve been full bodychecking their team down during the last minutes of the game. We weren’t gonna win anyway, but I’ll count that as a win in my book. I’ve got no regrets!
