I used to get moldy mud, but it was because I was putting used mud back into the same bucket as the new, unused mud. When you put mud that was put on a wall and scrapped of it has tiny pieces of paper in the mud from the wall and the tape, that paper is food for mold and fungus to grow. I always now only put used mud into a separate bucket and I've never had the issue since, i always try to use the old mud first and discard any used left over. I would rather throw away a pan worth of mud, rather than an entire bucket.

SS still has carbon in it, but the chromium in SS helps keep the steel from rusting. So it's not the carbon. Rust is iron oxide, so there is no carbon in the corrosion. So carbon isn't the issue. Gypsum is Calcium Sulfate, CaSO4. You're stinky mud is coming from the sulphur in there. You're probably right about the rust reacting with the mud, but it has nothing to do with the carbon. An iron knife, with no carbon, would probably still make things stinky.
@andriyshapovalov8886
3 жыл бұрын
I think you are right. The steel rusting process creates hydrogen, wich bonds with sulfur, the one in CaSO⁴ or even with sulfur dissolved in carbon steel (always there as an impurity) and as a result H²S the rotten eggs smell. I would think that's the reason.
@scubaseppy
3 жыл бұрын
There is not much carbon in ss. I don't know what that blade is made of but for example, 304 is .08% carbon and hardened steel is around .50% also if the carbon steel blades are carrying in the mud leaving material; it's most likely reacting with the mud much more than a ss blade.

What makes the mud go bad in the first place? When I buy a premixed mud there isn't anything wrong with it. But after I use it and put it away for few months it goes moldy. Any stainless steel will corrode with the absence of oxygen. So if you leave your tools dirty between coats and overnight, the weekend etc. You will get this problem. Also not keeping your tools and buckets clean will contribute to the hitchhikers that ruin your skin coat and create more work or a less desirable finish. I found the non- stainless more flexible to work with than the stainless, but like you, I've always reverted back to the stainless. When one of my favorite knives or trowels gets a nick or gouge it always hurts. It's like losing a trusted friend. Presanding the knife before use was a great tip to share (was a trade secret). I have had really good luck with Wal-board brand stainless knives.. except the 6inch which says it is stainless but rusts like carbon steel. I Can't stand the one piece stainless knives with the stainless handles because the handles are hollow and you cant hit nails with them without them denting the handle. I have had the rotten mud problem and I think it is from the water we use to thin the mud or from paper particles scraped off the drywall then put back in the bucket. I will not put mud back in the bucket from my pan anymore, I trash the last scoops in my pan.

From a biology standpoint I would guess that more iron leaches off the steel blades than the chromium iron alloy (aka Stainless steel) blades. Germs need trace iron to live. The advice for chlorine to kill germs and the water on top to exclude oxygen would reasonably mitigate bacterial growth. I’m a homeowner who needs to repair some horizontal outside corners and will also be removing a mid-ceiling kitchen soffit, so I’m looking forward to using what I’m learning here. I like how you show exactly where in the process you have to be fussy to achieve a great result with a minimum of effort.
@ergohack

I think you are correct. Drywall mud already has plenty of carbon to feed growth in the form of PVA. He mentioned somewhere else in the commwnts that taping mud is worse; I'm pretty sure taping mud has more PVA. Its possible that iron availability is the limiting factor for growth, and using carbon steel knives significantly increases iron availability in the mud.
@NickRgibbs

Interesting idea. It would be cool if you can test it in a small container or something just scrape you blades into a yogurt tub and check the 2 samples every week. Or take the mud out at play with it for a couple minutes and put it back in each week. I too had a thing of mud go bad under a thin layer of water after just 5 weeks. Gypsum has a fair amount of sulfur in it _(calcium sulphate dihydrate),_ so there's plenty there for whatever's growing in the mud to make some nasty smelling sulfur compounds.
