I’ve really noticed that at small time Gun shows. Any small gun show is gun carnie land. They have one or two nice guns at ridiculous prices, then have some weird plastic shit looking hand gun from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, etc, that probably only cost $10 even then, that shoots some weird fuckin ammo that doesn’t even exist anymore, and a bunch of cheap trinkets like bullets that fold out into a cheesy knife. Then they load all their shit up into their beat to shit Vandura conversion van and travel from small gun show to small gun show and probably only make $27.48 at each show. I’ve noticed the larger gun shows that take place in the big cities at a convention center usually have way more quality stuff.

That fucking happened to me with a Mosin 91/30 a year ago, the thing costed $700. I have no idea if that was a good price but whatever. I could have paid for the whole thing myself and still have had $300 left. However, my Mom and Dad both said no for no good apparent reason. In the store my Mom said "You should have brought your money" even though she actively discourages me from carrying even $300 with me to antique stores. She decided to also say that she just wanted me get the right gun for reenacting since I want to get started on that. I think it was just a garbage excuse. Now I am trying to get a nicely sporterized Norwegian Krag-Jørgensen specifically to use for hunting, even though the Mosin would have done just fine for both reenacting and hunting. But apparently I don't need it even though the gun I currently use for hunting is a really shitty sporter Springfield 1903 with the worst sights imaginable, a horrible stock with file marks and space between the wood and metal in important places , along with nowhere to attach a strap. It would be nice for once if I could just use a nice rifle in somewhat original condition instead of ugly sporterized garbage. Unfortunately my Dad doesn't have an eye for much else in terms of older firearms and my Mom only ever says no regardless of how much money it would cost. What makes it all sting more and make this paragraph a long one is that I saw a Mosin bayonet a day ago that I probably could have bought, but I am trying to save as as much as possible for other things.

I've been to one gun show and it was an awesome learning experience. Me and my brother had a table selling homemade pork jerky, when we sold out my brother bought himself a Stevens 77C pump action for $150(CAD) Upon further inspection of my brother's gun he didn't realize how crappy the condition actually was. Like the guy selling it didn't do a thing to it and obviously didn't give a shit. (I can see the why some people don't go to gun shows) The stock was cracked, the fore end was chipped, everything inside was covered in gunk, the firing pin was damaged, my brother didn't give the gun a closer look when he bought it but he's also not into guns as much so he didn't really know what to look for. But me and my dad took it apart, scraped and cleaned the crap out of it, glued the stock together, fixed the firing pin, now it's a beautiful unit.

The only thing I may go to a gun show for is to buy hazardous material, it's still cheaper than shipping it. I think a smart vendor should give you your admission fee back on a larger purchase. I did see something I wanted on a table and showed the vendor what I could buy it for online and he matched the price. :-)

Dad started taking me to gun shows when I was very young back in the mid 70's. I'll never forget the stacks of Vietnam era surplus, the crates of WW2 ammo, the German Officer hats, SS helmets all so very affordable back in those days. I quit going to gun shows in the mid 90's when prices got crazy on everything. Good video Mike.

You know when I last went to the gunshow with my dad there was a vietnam war veteran selling some fantastic stuff and surprisingly had good deals but my dad being my dad didn't bring a lot of money, I hope that m1d garand got a good home. Also there was a guy that had a fascist youth training carcano carbine that was fully functional for either 250 or 350 don't know if it would've been a good deal or not.

I still go to gun shows but it is an all day event. I keep an eye out for people bringing firearms in to sell. They usually have decent prices because they came to sell and don't want to take it home. Also by taking your time and looking at everything you can still find deals. I don't mind paying $10 - they have to rent and pay for security. Just have the mindset to only buy if you find what you want at a price you are willing to pay. Chocolate chip.

Used to go to gun shows very regularly. I’ve found there’s about 3 reasons to go (and deals on milsurps isn’t one of them): 1. For fun. There is a bit of a thrill of the hunt aspect, but it’s a bit like metal detecting or panning for gold. Kinda fun if you’re into it but anyone living the real world should be aware that it usually isn’t worth the trouble from a dollars and cents standpoint. 2. Deals on modern stuff. If you’re after modern firearms, since there are usually no illusions about collectibility, they can be competitively priced... especially since there will likely be 5 other vendors with the exact same model. I’ve never actually bought a milsurp at a gun show (never seen ANY I wanted enough to pay the price they were asking) but modern stuff I’ve purchased many times. 3. You’re after something very niche and aren’t super concerned about the price. If your collection needs something rather specific and uncommon, you never know what might turn up as a used gun with various vendors. It may not be a good deal but if you have to have it, it may be there.

Chocolate Chip I've been to only one gun show out here in WA, and it was terrible. It was mostly a couple corporate booths for scope and suppressor manufacturers, then like two tables for two gun shops from out of town selling incredibly beautiful chromed, gold inlaid, platinum plated, pearl handled antique revolver replicas that STARTED at $6K each (these were more commemorative jewelry than firearms, IMHO), then a bunch of tables with poorly cared for trinkets and military patches, a booth with range brass that looks like it was scooped off the range that morning, and finally, one table with an ancient old guy selling WWII rifles in terrible condition that he claims he captured from the enemy himself. Mostly Arisaka rifles, but also a couple of Mosins, a Caracano, and one K98. ALL in terrible condition with cracked stocks, chipped muzzle crowns, one had a completely smooth bore, I think one was missing some parts, and the K98 actually had MOLD growing in one of the cracks in the stock. $500... A little sign sitting there saying, "$500." I asked him if that was the price for the entire dozen-or-so rifles (still would have been a rip-off as these rifles barely qualified as parts guns), and he scoffed as if I'd greatly insulted him, and he replied in a gruff voice, "No, EACH!" I was stunned, then laughed and told him good luck with that. I was still super new to shooting, only having bought my first gun about a month earlier, and even I knew he was full of shit. Haven't gone to a gun show since. That really soured my experience.

Are you talking about the shows in Puyallup? Gone there off and on since the 90s. It used to be a big deal for me to go but seems like 25% of the tables are non-shooting related. Hot sauce, painted saw blades, knitted socks, etc. Also too many "high-society" dealers. If you're not smart like them they tend to treat you condecendingly.

Forget gun shows now... They have been going down hill for so long that it's become a total waste of money and time. You pay a ton of money to park in a lot far away so you have to walk a while and then get in line to get wanded by a wannabe guard with an attitude and then you got in to see the long line of commercial vendors trying to sell you such great gun related items like: Camping gear Beef jerky Anti-fog wipes for glasses Timeshares Jacuzzis Worthless costume jewelry Various plasticky or made in China "tactical" crap like flashlights or knives Then you have tables of junk and rusty stuff that people try to hawk at inflated prices. Worthless. Waste of time. I'll shop online from Gun Broker or other places. (Chocolate Chip)

My gun shows still have alot of good deals. I found a $400 double holster belt for my revolvers, bought for $30. I got a '57 Ruger Standard for $200 last January, a 10/22 for $150 and an Argentine Mauser for $200 the year before. Your advice on doing research is very important when going to a gun show. Prices will never be what they were so its best to know what’s fair. I go to gun auctions when l can. It’s so easy to get auction fever so know what you want, know the market and don’t over bid or over buy. There will always be another gun to buy. If you see a fair price be on an item be ready to buy it. Never ever impulse buy, you might get lucky but chances are you will get screwed. Enjoy the process.

I'm barely younger than Mike and so I also saw the tail end of the "good years" of gun shows. Going to the gun shows with Dad was how he and I spent time together after I got sick of garage sale hopping with him. I remember the tables full of milsurps, tons of parts kits, mountains of ammo, an entire corner of various sizes of ammo cans, and racks upon racks of hunting shotguns. It was at one of these shows that I bought my first bayonet, a CETME C bayonet, for $5. Mom was mad that he "let me buy a knife", little did she know he wanted to buy a .22LR bolt gun before I convinced him to buy more 5.56 ammo instead. By the time 2013 rolled around, there were only a few tables of milsurps, maybe one table had parts kits, the ammo was in single layers, there were only a few stacks of ammo cans, and the rest of the tables were shotguns, new production hunting rifles, AR parts, and a smattering of conspiracy theorist tables. By the time I started going to shows by myself (2017), I was lucky to find more than three tables that had more milsurps than a K98k, a 91/30, and a South American mauser. There's still one milsurp vendor with an impressive layout and at least seven or eight deals per show. There's still at least one smaller vendor with a variety of milsurps and at least one with a layout of cheap surplus ammo to dig through. There's still a few vendors that you can negotiate with for a better price, that's how I got a few of my rifles. I got my MAS36 for a steal because I talked with the seller for a while and he liked that I knew so much about it. Of course there's also the worst types of vendors, including the guy that'll offer you $100 for the $500 rifle you're carrying around or the guy that has his 9x19 reloads priced at $1.20 per round. That all said, I'll still go to shows until it gets to the day I walk out without scoring a single deal. Chocolate chip

They’re just showing off their average pistol collection but wanting 2-3k for them A little grace in the modern gun show is 3-4 times every year one large group puts on shows that bring >500 people and I’ve only gone to one since they all canceled since of COVID but I saw a bunch of clean looking Turkish mausers for 200 came with bayonet too, couple SKS’s, one that had a Slavic country’s metal honor guard crest on the stock for 220. I’ve only been to one of them before they got canceled but they seen to make good shows. none of the bullshit show offs or vendors with no gun related stuff, but a fun show to go to.

Literally walk around with a basket that says "ask me about my basket of crap" full of magazines I don't need anymore, random parts, etc. Swapping and trading and making some money. Have sold every gun I've walked around a show with as well here in Texas. Sell one then go get another out of the car. Gets around having to get a table, haha. When you're undercutting the table dealers by %10 or more for the same damn thing with no overhead besides the entry fee and the gas to get there, you're guaranteed to make a sale.
