It's not just Shien, pretty much all fast fashion and lots of designer brands are quilty of this. Plenty of documentaries on KZitem about these issues. I'd recommend a book Slow Death by a Rubber Duck about harmful products surrounding us. I made lots of changes within my home after reading it. I very rarely buy from high street fast fashion brands, always go for natural fibers and preferably organic. I also try to buy from brands that carry Oeko Tex certificate which guarantees the use of non toxic materials.

In California I’ve seen prop 65 warnings on anything from: cars (saw a sticker on a Nissan Sentra once), makeup (titanium dioxide), Asian canned drinks (for the container) and so on. Unfortunately just about everything has something from that list. Asian shopping marketplaces like Yesstyle also have the warnings on various products.

I ordered two silk blouses from Lilly Silk because I had seen their things on so many influencers. Even though I generally don’t buy from these manufacturers, I gave it a try. Awful. One sleeve was nearly two inches narrower than the other. The quality was so bad but the return policy was worse. Not all countries have the same quality controls. But worse are the ingredients. I’m allergic to formaldehyde which is unfortunately used by many manufacturers of inexpensive clothes to set the dyes. I had serious rashes from just trying them on. Be careful.

Oh wow, you may have just answered an issue with a pair of shorts I made a number of years ago. I broke out something awful and assumed it was something they treated the fabric with but never thought of formaldehyde! I washed them several times and still had an issue and ended up giving them away. Very interesting.

Really? Wow. I used to buy from LilySilk a year+ ago and never had these issues (TBF I am not allergic) aside from 1 time a woven top came apart after 1 wash - emailed them and they refunded me completely. Either the quality went downhill (unfortunately tends to happen when brands get popular & greedy) or maybe you were unlucky? Have you tried emailing them? (They should list potential allergens!)

I’m from California but I live in Georgia now. I still keep up with what’s going on because my family has a house there and I do the property management for it. So most stuff in person you don’t notice the cancer warnings, online it’s something you notice because you have to read more about the item, such as material and sizing info so you’re more likely to notice than shopping in person. In person you we and touch so you’re less likely to read a warning. People say California is crazy but it’s not. It’s full of regular people who are just trying to survive like everyone else but on occasion they’re like, hey this is dangerous can we do something about it and help the masses? As far as fast fashion I try to avoid it but I don’t end up buying fast fashion from Amazon or local shops. I’m plus size so finding something that fits, it’s my style and a price I can afford sometimes quality ends up last on the list because I need something but I do try to find quality first so I’m not buying new clothes every few months.

Even though both Zara and H&M are fast fashion brands, I find the quality of Zara items is higher than at H&M. What's worse is that we don't know where fibers come from, to make the fabric for the garments. Most likely, it's the fibers and maybe the fabric that are treated with harmful substances. These treatments are one of the reasons for the low prices that some brands afford to put on their clothes. or this is what i heard some time ago..

@@r.a5765 Yea, I know and understand. And you're not missing out on anything. Good for you! I'm proud of you. Personally, i refuse to buy items under the Nestle brand, due to the child slavery for their cocoa items, them NOT caring about the health of their customers (not that other companies care, I'm aware of this), or their complete disregard for nature with the Nespresso machine and the plastic pods that must be used with the machine. I know other coffee brands copied the idea and the situation got worse. But for a "fair" market, imitating Nestle was a bit of a necessity, i think. [a bit of a brag] in 2019 i managed not to buy any clothes or stuff that wasn't essential, REALLY liked, or i forgot. At first it was a bit weird to pass by a shop and not want to go in. In about a month, i was able to ignore the window displays of the shop. I'm a beginners sewist, so i should put more energy into making my own clothes. This is the plan starting the 2nd half of the year, and going onwards.

Hi Sophie, I know that I am always harping on Eco friendly and sustainability in fashion. We have to remember that in the beginning of mass fashion, production chemicals were being invented, and added to pure materials to create new luxe ways of having fabric fall nicely, and create a certain look. So since then, that’s been the norm to continue finding ways of making a material such as rayon that falls, a certain way to create the garment. I can assure you, and this is my opinion these fast fashion companies have not turned around the issue of proposition 65. We have to get to the root of these manufacturers, What chemicals are being added to the materials, and I know this is big and long, but the way people are treated in the factories and the people that come and visit the factories to make sure that they’re running correctly. This is such a long chain to get to the actual garment. Companies like Shein buy the cheapest fabrics so that they can create fast fashion. A fast turnaround on a new silhouette, a new look. We have to constantly now be in vigilance. For instance, Levi’s is now marketing that they are creating more sustainable denim fabrics. And other companies are joining in. The issue is who is looking to see what they’re doing. And in denims issue-is water, sources and chemicals that are added to water and even the amount of water is important for the consumer to consider. There’s so many minutia regarding this subject. The bottom line is it’s very difficult for companies to get beyond the fact that they are going to have to self regulate and have a futuristic thought process about the reality of sustainability and Eco preservation. Finally, and I do apologize this is been so long. Finally, there is a bill that has been passed in one of the houses in France regarding charges to be taxed on manufactures and companies who are buying these materials. So each garment will be charged somewhere like a three dollar Levy to help create a consciousness in those manufactures so that they start participating in this chemical warfare. I believe it’s at the stage where it is going to be passed as a law in France and my next point is who’s going to regulate this law now. It’s a great step forward and I really can’t wait to see how it’s handled. Sorry this has been so long.

Funnily enough I have a dress from Dolce and Gabbana that is made of polyester and lace isn't great at all, it's baggy in weird areas around the arms. 😂 I would take what the company who wrote against shein with a pinch of salt too. When we are living in a world where we are in a cost of living crisis some people can't afford to buy more expensive clothing. Look at the labels inside most clothing...Next etc....most of it is made in China! Ebay and vinted are my favourite though. Thank you, Sophie. At least a lot of people know what Shein quality is like and how problematic it is, and can opt not to shop there. What concerns me, is that I see the very same exact clothes/items that are sold on Shein, Temu, AliBaba, DHgate, etc., listed for sale on Amazon, Etsy, etc., (for a much higher price, too) and even in some brick&mortar stores. Most people would probably not think that items sold there have harmful chemicals in them. As to the quality of clothes... This is also sad, but when I go to a regular mall, and look at clothes, their quality is either very similar or not that much better than Shein's (depending on the store), but they charge A LOT more.

Hello from California's capitol! Born and raised here. Prop 65 is a good thing imo. We grow food for most of the country and several international locations as well. The soil here is really prone to floods and runoff so avoiding damage is vital. You can't even have hedgehogs and ferrets here as pets in case they get loose and reproduce. It's pretty interesting. My hometown actually was able to sue the city in a class action over carcinogens in our water supply. Some CSU (California State University) students found lead in schools around the time that Mari Copeny (Little Miss Flint) found lead in the water in Michigan. It has made it so effectively every place has an environmental control process and FOIA requests mean this data is public. Unfortunately it also has kind of killed the garment industry here. Which...to me says more about the way things are being made. Even some luxury goods get an added tag here because of some chemical or other is on things. I'm getting more into making my ow things. My mother used to make my clothes when I was little and now I'm an adult and a weird size so it's a good reason to learn to sew. IDK it's just part of life here? I don't really think about it unless the store has a sign on the shelf which is required. In general anything cheaply made will end up to this category. It's made me a pretty discerning shopper and when I was a kiddo we often would get ecology lessons in school. It's just part of daily life. Doing anything takes ages because of it and other factors but in general I'm grateful for it as my family are prone to cancers. It's probably kept me alive longer.

As a small business artist, my biggest frustration is shipping costs. It's roughly $25 to send overseas. So how does a fast fashion company afford free shipping when the garments are $2? I heard they have special deals with either countries or shipping companies to have discounted shipping. But also I know it heavily relies on mass amounts of orders to make up for it. I can barely afford to keep items at a reasonable price. Let alone send letters and packages to family for fun. But big companies can still make money even with returns (think of it as double shipping). Ah, it makes me feel trapped

I used to live in California, but am now in Arizona. The Prop 65 has been a blessing and a curse, in my opinion. Obviously it's super helpful to know there could be a dangerous chemical present, but as you noted, it might just be in the packaging. There are also things like aloe vera and aspirin that are on the warning list, and some chemicals the EU has banned aren't listed. It would be great for the US to have a consistent process like the EU has.

This honestly inspired me to buy linen, I got so sick of cheap clothes and decided to buy from Quince since their stuff is more affordable than other sustainable places. I could only afford 2 pieces but that was worth more than 20 Shein items.
