For years I've said that that the secret to dressing like a Pokemon trainer is at least one major piece that cannot be described using clothing words that the average dad would know. "Pants", "shirt" and "skirt" are too easy. Show me a sleeveless jacket with suspender straps hanging from the bottom. Biker shorts that are also a unitard. Make a shirt that goes over too many sections of the body to clearly categorize, make the colors high constrast, and then cut the shoulders out and you're good to go.

Since I've cosplayed Cynthia before, I can confirm that the 'why' of her hair baubles is "the absolute whimsy of it bouncing when you move your head". It's a fun acessory to fidget with when you sit down or something. Only con is that it was SUCH an ordeal to find out how to attach it. I came up with a whole plan to attach them to hair clips, only for them to be too heavy. Eventually I just sewed them into my wig. I also think they actually defy the design expectation with that choice, because many people have thought 'she must have an umbreon' when seeing Cynthia, so that's a fun misdirect.

AHH the gen 6 girl player design was an absolute obsession for my budding fashion designer brain, she's so perfectly on trend and polished for SPECIFICALLY the early 2010s. I desperately wanted to make her skirt. The entire thing of trainers being forced to always wear hats until gen 8 I think was also one of the defining traits of the Pokemon aesthetic, because maybe I just wasn't very sporty, but I knew no one who would ever wear a hat if they werent forced to at school. Yet the game said absolutely not, find a hat you like and wear it! Then gen 9...personally I actually really ended up liking gen 9 but ooof the uniforms are almost exactly like the ones I grew up with and hated, and kind of drained the outfit potential from all student characters/trainer npcs, luckily absolutely carried by Team Star and the gym leaders. Even Arven and Nemona, don't quite get to express with clothing that you don't just get to wear an exact duplicate of immediately. What is their taste in outfits outside of school? Is Nemona into sportswear with bright and cheery motifs? Did Arven have any space to develop a sense of fashion between a lot of depression and speedrunning survival skill development? (I like to think he's a socks and birkenstocks type, a combo strictly banned at school)

Seeing this cosplay come together over such an extended timeframe is weirdly reassuring to me. Like we all know making costumes takes a ton of time, but sometimes professional cosplay content makes me feel discouraged over the lack of time I can dedicate to my projects bc of my life and full-time non-cosplay job. The way you present your process feels so relatable, right down to the late night, last minute “I really should be packing” final touches. Even with the generations' professors, their designs tell you what their personality is like from the first look you have of them. Oak is classic, he's the baseline. You don't find out much about him but he's professional and put together, without being too rigid Elm looks a bit more erratic, which makes sense as baby Pokémon were introduced in that gen, so he has to keep up with all the baby Pokémon in his lab, like a tired parent Birch, in both the original RSE and ORAS, you can tell he's pretty laid back when he's not being attacked by a wild poochyena just by the cargo shorts Rowan is the first one to not wear a white lab coat. He's well dressed and put together, but there's something about him that makes you curious every time he's talking to your character. Juniper has the same vibes as Birch, while also maintaining her absolute girlboss nature with that pencil skirt Sycamore (my beloved) looks like he's been through some stuff. His hair is wild and fluffy, his shirt's slightly undone, but it's tasteful. He's a cafe-loving goofball; but depending on sources he's simultaneously a workaholic with a coffee addiction. Kukui is even MORE laid back than Birch or Juniper. No shirt at all. But despite that he still knows what has to get done since he makes himself your final challenge to become Alola's first champion (honorable mention to Burnett, another athletic girlboss) Magnolia has this wise lady look to her, she's been at this for a long time- and her look reflects that, with her lab coat reaching her ankles with her dress. Sonia on the other hand, she JUST finally became the regional professor in place of Magnolia, so she's still wearing what she is when we first see her. She's a well known researcher in galar, but when it comes to being a professor, she's still got things left to learn. Sada and Turo are.... obvious. They got so absorbed into their respective time periods (past and future respectively) that they lost sight over everything else in their lives. Their AIs wearing what the humans that built them thought was appropriate for whatever time they were researching. I just think that's fun ^-^ Some more honorable mentions: Laventon; like our player character, isn't from hisui. But unlike us he's still from that time period, and his clothes reflect that. They also look well worn, since he follows the player to every galaxy base camp while they help him complete the first ever Pokédex. Director Clavell, our stand in professor since Sada and Turo are absent, also wears the same color palette as the students. He doesn't have to wear the uniform like them but seeing him with it makes him seem approachable. Though the fur collar around his neck (similar to a certain trauma inducing champion from Sinnoh 😆) tells us that he's probably hiding something, but we won't find out until later. Bonus points for his glasses doing the Anime Thing. Lemme know if I missed anyone!!

I love this analysis, and may I ask; I consider Jacq the true professor role of gen 9; he introduces and guides the player and evaluates your Pokedex, and he even follows the tree name tradition. But honestly, all I get from his design is "quirky purple man, got a lotta books!"

Personally, my method of adding challenge to pokemon games is to run them where I only use what I call “gift pokemon” - that is, pokemon that game practically hands to you. So yes, your starter and any other pokemon that are literally given to the player, but also things like trades, fossils, and set encounters (such as the Snorlax that like to block your path, or the Gimmighoul that sit on top of the watchtowers in Paldea). I also try to rely on found items as much as possible, rather than buying them, though that’s not exactly a new concept to pokemon challenges. I find it very fun, as it forces me to not only use pokemon I normally wouldn’t (see: Snorlax!), but also to just deal with type disadvantages and lack of coverage that, on my own, I would have never let be an issue. For example, I’m in the early part of my scarlet run rn, and my only three pokemon are Sprigatito, Snom, and the aforementioned Gimmighoul. The fire/flying struggle is REAL, I actually lost to the bug gym on my first attempt, and Gimmighoul is frankly a struggle to make work at the moment. I’m having a lot of fun! :D

I'm watching the long form videos on this project way out of order and I've seen your reels in passing for ages but in the past couple of days I've finally watched several of your long videos while working on my own little craft project and it's been a real pleasure. The time spent on the video subjects (e.g. the primary: sewing/project work and the secondary: movie analysis/convention stories/etc) is incredibly well balanced, the transitions between subjects is smooth and allows for you to build your discussion in a way that's dynamic and engaging but not disruptive, and your vibes are just immaculate. I love cosplay, I never broached it to the extent you have, but we come from the same late '00s/early '10s cosplay era and your approach to the craft resonates with me deeply. I remember doing a somewhat thrown together Cowgirl Trainer cosplay at Colossalcon way back in 2013 and unfortunately it didn't read as Pokemon so much as a MLP character 🥲 This video lowkey makes me want to reimagine that cosplay because I stand-by that it was a great idea for a low-key, final-con-day, cosplay LOL Anyway, thank you for sharing your creation/development process through these videos. They're really cool and it's very fun to follow along while exploring topics like The First Movie or the unhinged fashion of the Pokemon world!!

I had no idea that the world had gotten so big. To be truthful I stopped paying attention long before the kids stopped watching. It's funny that the grandson found all the old dvds and vhs to start following. The next gen is hooked! Your take on things makes me think and I love the care and attention you put into your creations!

Uniforms in g9 is a backtrack, but I feel like it's partially a stepping stone for how much customization we got for the character. Im hoping they bring back the wardrobe of outfits AND the player customization for g10! (I was also salty about the uniforms but the dlc adds some more which is nice, but still hoping for wardrobe comeback)

i love this long-term commitment to a project series, as a testament to how it's okay if things take time. it's okay to give yourself a little break. big thoughts take big time. it's not about churning out "content" - it's about figuring things out and being kind to yourself and allowing space for designs to change and grow as you do (and the occasionally very chaotic late-night rush when the inspiration hits). that's what makes your videos so wholesome to watch! 💖

I'm gonna put it out there that if someone had a shawl from the 1860s and chose to wear it in the 1890s, that is frugal, not anachronistic. As Bernadette Banner says, "There's nothing wrong with wearing an old favorite." (Also if you wanna talk about timeline accuracy, Anne of Green Gables was written about 1900 meant to take place in the 1890s. Montgomery revisited Anne Shirley periodically writing sequels as they occurred to her and then going back and filling in holes. This is why Anne of Windy Poplars references characters from Anne of Avonlea, but Anne of the Island doesn't. Rilla of Ingleside was written before Rainbow Valley and Anne of Ingleside, which make the chronology of the earlier books weird. Anne's children need to be grown by the time Canada enters WWI, but if Anne is 11 in the first book and that takes place in 1893 and she marries at 26, there is no way her sons would be old enough to serve or her daughters old enough to join the nurses. )

loved this video. about the team star bosses, i want to point out that (in the game's story) their outfits are designed by the poison boss Atticus. he is a young fashion designer. various things about the team star boss style are made by their team and all of them are rebelling against school in their teens. i think its a cool way to show what a character is about and it explains the experimental art and outfits they go with. i'd also like to add that if pokemon fashion is what you consider unhinged, i'd love to see your reaction to jojo's bizarre adventure fashion. it makes pokemon outfits look like something you'd find in the local clothing store chain by comparison.

We come to admire the delicate and by the book hand sewing, basting, and pinning. We stay for when you decide "yeah actually I NEED to hand make FIFTY fabric pokeballs as a fun little design element for this skirt"

i am literally atticus's #1 fan, and i've been wanting to make his outfit ever since i saw him. Whoever designed him must have gotten a pay raise because dear lord, they made a sludge covered ninja uniform look good. The thing is, in his model, he actually has seams that don't even connect to the hems of his uniform, making it almost impossible to sew a cosplay of him as accurate as possible. Not only that, but the amount of time it would take to create the asymmetrical shells (if you would even want to call them shells) on the tails of his uniform would drive me insane, and his sleeves would be absolute hell to perfect as well. god damn it atticus why do you have to be so complicated

I loved this whole video, and the fact you mentioned Plasma's outfits being ridiculous made me laugh, because they're literally dressed like Pokémon crusaders due to the nature of their evil team. Pokémon Black was my first game and holds a special spot in my heart even though a lot of people Muk on Gen V. They had a thought-provoking (although of course ill-intentioned) goal and the character development you see in N and his interactions with you as a Trainer makes for a beautifully crafted story that always hits me in the feels. I think all of the games have had the ability to create stories like this, but BW actually did a lot better than people give it credit for. I literally tell anyone who asks me that even though it's nearly five generations ago by now, it still holds up. It actually led me to write up my _own_ character based off of the adventures I had in game, especially involving the Entralink and its interdimensional properties 'cause I really enjoyed that game function. Also, this video has inspired me to someday make the outfit I wrote up for him. I took a lot of time designing it, including his bag and accessories. It feels very put together and it's an outfit I would actually wear if I were a Trainer, so it fits. If you really take the time to explore any of these games, there's often many details that will resonate heavily with each individual. BW being set in a region inspired mainly by the New York area was nostalgic for me, as I was born there but moved away when I was young. That whole game felt like home to me and it will always be my favorite installation in the series.

TL;DW Flamboyance drift is the phenomenon in which character designs in a long running franchise become increasingly absurd and impractical. Causes of this include improved graphics beings able to show more detail, the desire to market merchandise for said franchise with similar items in-universe, increasingly complex themes requiring more nuance to be communicated through an outfit, and the need of the franchise to keep pace with and stand out from the most creative people's fanart, cosplay, and OCs. The result is that in a franchise like Pokemon, Gen I gym leaders look like people you'd see on the street, while Gen IX gym leaders now look like...Pokemon gym leaders.
