Carl Sagan was more of a mouthpiece of scientific understanding than an actual scientist imagine how much smarter actual scientists are and more importantly they could communicate if they have the verbal capabilities of a Media personality charismatic intelligence is definitely something to encourage

He wasn't wrong. This interview reminds me of his famous warning: "I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness... The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance" Source: Carl Sagan, 'The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark'

Regrettably, I wasted the best years of my life as a well-intentioned Roman Catholic priest. (A faithful one, I might add, who never “buggered”, as the Brits say, any children. It was the female secretary who was always my biggest temptation; 2 to be exact.) I entered seminary in 1995, JUST before the dawn of the availability of the information we now have. If I had only heard, in the seminary, of the “arguments against” I would, I’m sure, have a wife, children and family of my own. Instead, I feel like “Brooks” in Shawshank Redemption upon his departure from prison. Carl Sagan WAS known to me around 1978, but I was but a child and concentrated mostly on the way he spoke not what he was saying. As an aside, it was the late and inimitable Christopher Hitchens who was, for me, irreconcilable. (If you feel the need, insert your critique of Hitchens here.)
