I always thought of the height in Sekiro to be more metaphorical than literal; like Owl isn't literally big enough to eat Sekiro, but in game he looks almost the same size relative to you as he did in the cutscene when you were a child, solidifying this idea that Sekiro still sees him as a dominating father figure. Isshin is much taller than Sekiro but incredibly thin, meaning that even though he may not look particular physically dangerous, his demeanour is such that he still looks down on Sekiro. Genichiro on the other hand is essentially your rival throughout the game (albeit one you've thoroughly beaten by the end) and as such he is closer to your size; but even then in his early stage his outfit makes him look significantly larger, whereas once Sekiro has "killed" him he changes to a much thinner and smaller vision of Genichiro.

The place owl finds him doesn’t really look like a town, just a regular battlefield since there aren’t many structures and none of them look like houses. Also wolf is carrying two swords on his back and taking a third off a corpse, presumably so he can sell them since swords are worth quite a bit during war. I think the natural conclusion is that he was following the battlefield to scavenge swords and such to sell for food, and he does seem to be starving since he’s called “starving wolf” by owl. So yeah, we don’t know how long he spent as a refugee exactly, but long enough that owl called him starving and that he’d resort to stealing weapons off the dead in order to survive

Oh my god thank you. This confirms something that was actually kind of bugging me in Elden Ring. I was noticing that when I was trying to farm certain weapons based on what the enemies had equipped I was getting weapons "one size too small." Like the footsoldiers who were seemingly using short swords were dropping daggers and the ones seemingly using longswords were dropping short swords and I was super confused. But then I noticed that with enemies, the weapon models were just . . . larger. Similarly, those Exile soliders in Stormveil seemed to have a unique longsword but then I noticed that it was just the fact that they have some sort of "briar" effect on any weapon they hold and they just had regular longswords by the model, but larger. Then it hit me that the player character model is just short. All the enemies seem bigger not because they're gigantic, but because the player character is a lil' wee guy. Also, this makes the Zweihander being classified as a Colossal Sword make way more sense, because for a 6'2" Norseman fighting with one it'd just be a greatsword, but for a 5'5" Souls protag that thing'd be enormous! Which does kind of make me wish there was a height slider in these games or maybe a new element of adding traits like in other RPGs so you could play as a taller character.

You're definitely right about the camera angle thing. There's another issue too--perspective. Enemies are nearly always farther away from the camera than the player, making them seem smaller. This is really noticeable in the Zelda games, where Ganondorf towers over Link in a way that's rather unrealistic in order to still look intimidating at a distance. Compare how he looks in his intro cutscene in the Twilight Princess fight to when he and Link are in the bind. It's even more pronounced in Ocarina of Time, where he's primarily fought at a distance. His model is over twice Link's height.

As other may have already stated, it's quite believable to have such height difference between characters given the worlds in which the games take place. In Sekiro you have ogres, undead monsters, giant animals, "normal" humans who are 80 years old but still stronger than you and people who have become immortal due to some spooky-magic-water. Very tall people aren't anything special if you ask me. In Bloodborne it also makes sense that Yharnamites are bigger than the average human because of the infected blood that is slowly turning them into beasts. I imagine that most of the citizens you see in Central Yharnam will become various types of beasts and werewolves if given enough time, and we can see first-hand that the werewolves are very tall, when they stand on two legs for their grab attack you can see they're like 2 and a half times your height.

This is actually the main* reason why Emma from Sekiro gives me more trouble than any other boss. She's shorter than Sekiro, so it's very easy for Sekiro to block view of her. FromSoft helped with this by making her movements very flowing and have her arms extend from her body, but it's still a significant visibility problem for me. *The other reason she gives me trouble is that she walks the way Isshin moves, at the same speed (might be a tad bit faster, but that could just be my imagination) with the same animation. Problem is, she's significantly shorter, so as she walks she just sorta slides across the floor. Makes it weird AF to track her movement.

An alternative solution to something like this would be to change how lock-on positions the camera. I.e. Instead of making it look directly at the lock-on point (Which tends to be somewhere like the centre of mass or the head) it could take a slightly elevated angle allowing you to look over the top of the PC. I'd kind of prefer it this way, since having humans look like _humans_ can be significant to create a proper distinction between non-human entities (I.e. I didn't realize until recently that the Silver/Black Knights in DS weren't actually human because of janky sizes means that these "Large humanoids" weren't visually distinct from Plebby McPleb Hollow from the tutorial areas)

It’s also generally useful from a narrative perspective because having a character smaller than most other enemies portrays them as small and weak, and the larger an enemy gets the more powerful they are. It also tends to work in favor of human characters because the compounds with the fact that you know a human is generally X size. So seeing a human even slightly bigger portrays them as something of great power because they clearly have some sort of monstrous element to them that makes them tower over you. And when you set that standard, it also makes reversing that effect and making a creature smaller comparatively make them MORE dangerous, because now the player underestimates them. It’s why The Orphan of Kos is so hated. Because it’s this awful emaciated thing with it’s own umbilical cord to throw at you like a club, and yet compared to all the other monsters in that dlc it’s Tiny. And then it runs up to you and flails it’s arms screaming and you’re a bloody spot in the dirt, or a stain in the water.
