WHY LINKEDIN DOESN’T WORK
In Part 2 of this conversation, we talk about why LinkedIn doesn’t work. Even though LinkedIn seems abundant in professional opportunities, we explain why this simply isn’t the case. We explain why LinkedIn isn’t helpful for finding a job, and we fail to justify why you need LinkedIn.
LINKEDIN IS NOT HELPFUL
LinkedIn is promotes itself as a place where business professionals can connect for career opportunities. In my experience, this is very far from the truth. The reason why LinkedIn doesn’t work is because it doesn’t change or improve the professional network experience at all.
LINKEDIN IS A WASTE OF TIME
LinkedIn is a waste of time. You post up your resume and headshots, then try to engage with as many people as you can. You assume that your Linkedin connections are people that want to give you opportunities. You spend time liking post that showcase other people’s work accomplishments. What is the point of all this? You’ve spent a lot of time crafting your image and sharing your work history, only to get in a long line for the same jobs that thousands of people are trying to get. All the while, LinkedIn isn’t actively trying to improve your career.
USING LINKEDIN FOR JOBS
Many fail to realize that companies already have established hiring practices, and don’t go out of their way to search social networks to fill positions. Also, LinkedIn doesn’t work to help you build your connections on a deeper level. Instead, Linkedin puts up barriers to connect with others, and does not provide any real reward for making connections through LinkedIn. Are you rewarded for interacting with a connection? Nope. Does LinkedIn incentivise specific people to connect in order to fulfill a job need? Nope. Does LinkedIn provide its users with activities to do in real life in order to strengthen the actual professional connection? Nope.
LINKEDIN PROBLEMS
LinkedIn is not helpful because it only provides a place for people to be. LinkedIn doesn’t work to develop collaborations between its users. LinkedIn doesn’t offer new solutions to your career dilemma. It’s just FaceBook but people talk about work. They aren’t actively working on LinkedIn, and LinkedIn doesn’t put much effort into fostering growth between users. If it’s entirely up to the user’s cunning ability to seek out and jump through the hurdles to make connections, then what is the point of LinkedIn? Someone with the social skill to make career connections can get the same results using conventional networking.
WHY DO I NEED LINKEDIN?
You don’t need LinkedIn. In fact, LinkedIn needs you. Without its users, LinkedIn would be a ghost town. But just because people own some LinkedIn property, doesn’t make LinkedIn a bustling big city. It’s not. LinkedIn is a quiet, cookie-cutter suburban neighborhood: Nosy neighbors, people that want to be left alone, a keeping-up-with-the-Jones mentality, all wrapped up in a generic soulless package.
LinkedIn doesn’t provide anything new and revolutionary when it comes to improving your career.
