We've been building solid chimneys for 500 years here in the UK and its rare to see that sort of damage to a chimney.

Agreed, the lead work is a right dogs dinner and that is not a proper chimney cap.

Hey Chad thanks for the great information as always! Would you recommend a type N mortar instead or something softer for New England chimneys? Also where do you get your custom chimney caps from? Thanks!

Yes, I believe type N is the way to go unless we start a lime revival in this country. Quick-lime mortar has proven to be the best in my opinion.

I get my caps from National chimney supply. Unfortunately they don’t sell to the public.

Why there is no top cover/roof?

This has a lot to do with what you are building. The strength of a brick wall comes from the mortar alone (or, more specifically, the quality of the mortar AND most importantly the quality of the joint work) so, if a wall is structural, it may be beneficial to use a harder mortar. On a chimney, it may or may not (usu. not modern ones, but..) be structural (important or relating to the overall strength, rigidity, and durability of the structure). There are other solutions to getting the water out, such as weeping ropes every so often when the wall is laid.

It looked like he had at least four other chimneys on the house. Are they in the same state of disrepair ?

No, they were still built with the older brick and mortar. The chimney we removed was the newest one.
