I love how Shida’s art is sharp yet expressive, and his use of shadows in his art is noticeable yet not excessive. I also love how he animates a lot of the action scenes with timing that almost feels like it goes beat by beat. Shida is an incredible artist and animator, and this is an incredible analysis of it.

Great video, I particularly liked how you mentioned Uchiyama’s mentorship of Shida. Uchiyama often gets a bad rap within the DB Sakuga community (and though most don’t know his name, many of his corrections have become memed for their silliness in the wider community too), but it’s clear that the guy was a nice person. Fostering young talent is always an important thing, and Uchiyama helped Shida immensely in getting him to where he is today. Shida also holds him with high regard, and I believe that means a lot as well.

I do think some of his work in Super and Super Broly goes a little too far with the “wormy” camera action as you put it. Other than that specific stylistic choice with the camera, his actual art is amazing. I can totally understand why he does the camera stuff though. It’s very impressive from a technical perspective to have a fully fleshed out, coherent, and consistent 3D image of a character, especially with how many frames he puts into these shots. It’s not like a slower pan around of the camera, the thing is zooming all around. To change angles that much is crazy hard, but I think it’s more of a technical showing of “hey, look what I can do better than anybody else” rather than purely adding positives to the scene. I think it’s similar to how a musician versus a music enthusiast would feel about an overly technical piece of music, especially say a guitar solo. The guitar player would marvel at the sheer difficulty of what is being played, but the music enjoyer doesn’t care how technical it is. All they care about is whether they think it sounds good. If they can’t understand what is happening aurally, they probably will not enjoy it despite the guitar player geeking out about how technical it is. I think I am the same way with animation. I am not an animator. I can’t draw at all, so I don’t personally understand the technicality of what is happening aside from knowing that it’s hard. I can appreciate it, but a true animator would probably be geeking out about how insane it is.
