"Basic biology" means "stuff I learned in high school." Now, I'm no scientist, but I've taken quite a few college-level science courses. And if there's one thing I learned, it's that nearly all of the science I learned in high school was incredible surface level and over-simplified because the actual theories are much more complicated. Too complicated for an introductory course. I can't imagine how complicated graduate level science must be. Maybe-just maybe-there's a level of understanding above "basic biology" that isn't as simple as penis=man, vagina=woman. There's a reason it's called "basic" and not "fundamental."

No, they fail to grasp that "science" is not a "source of eternal Truth" etched on stone tablets, but a tool for *accurately* modeling what is observed in the world. I see this all too often. And we can see it _right now_ by looking at how people have been reacting to the professional virologists, epidemiologist, and biochemists throughout the pandemic. Look at the attacks on them for, "changing their minds," the moment new data comes in that forces the current working model to be refined to incorporate it. Witness the attacks on science for, "not being consistent," because science adapts to new information and corrects itself. This predates 2020, however. I once heard that rightwingers were losing their sh1t because climate physicists were "cheating" because they changed the climate models to match the data. 🤦♂️ Which is the definition of science. Oh BTW: One of the ways we _test_ climate and weather computer models _for accuracy_ is by feeding them data from the past and running them forward to see if they correctly predict the present. Which makes sense: if you feed in last week's conditions, run the model forward 6 days, and get a forecast that doesn't match yesterday's weather, you know that the model isn't going to take today's conditions and give you the weather for one week from now. So, you use the weather conditions measured every hour for the past 7*24 hours to fine-tune the model. And you do that over and over, using all 52 weeks of the past year, then do all that again using each year from the past couple of decades. This is how we improve our weather forecasting models. And something similar is done to improve the climate models.

the "basic biology" thing is such a stupid argument because transphobes swear that biology is only as complex as what they learned in first grade 3-5 decades ago. when there's clearly much more thorough and nuanced biological concepts that just weren't accessible for their age group/discovered yet at that time. like, in my high school, we were first taught the dalton theory of atomic structures, then the bohr-rutherford diagram, and only after a few years did we then learn of probability clouds for electrons, which is probably STILL not the most up-to-date version of the most accurate theory! because the flawed, outdated theories are just the very first basic step that you then rebuild and improve from!

On the Basic Science thing, the problem with that take is that Basic science IS incorrect science, because it's science dumbed down so hard that a 10year old can understand it. Most adults have advanced beyond basic science, and understand ACCURATE science. It's just harder to get your head around. Brain chemistry, genital configuration, gender expression and chromosome configuration are all separate from each other and completely unrelated, but it's just easier to tell a literal child that as a baby develops in the womb it's genetic DNA switches determine how it develops, it's just that's oversimplified because in all of those 4 categories there are spectra - the genital configuration can get plumbed differently depending on how the DNA activates and interacts with other genes (for example a person born with a vulva is expected to have the urethra be a totally separate part of that area to the clitoris and vagina but due to clitoris being the same tissue/part of the foetus that makes the glans of a penis, the urethra can get plumbed straight through the clitoris (which is a not-uncommon intersex configuration) and there is no way many cis women would realise that that has happened because you can't see inside your own vulva - you'd have to have a doctor specifically looking for that kind of thing). Also the chromosome config can cross over as well and there is no way that many people would know without having their chromosomes specifically mapped, there are cis women with XY chromosomes and vice-versa. So while "Penis, Male brain chemistry, XY chromosomes and masculine expression" and "vulva, female brain chemistry, XX Chromosomes and feminine expression" are the most expected combinations there are a ton of other ways things can mix and match whether intersex or on one or another side of the expected binary.

@@rynahdaley778 I would say yes, teach the science as what we actually know about these things, but a) it's hard to teach science to people who deny science, and b) in many parts of the US, where many of these transphobes live, there is little to no sex ed, so when the schools don't even teach about things like the clitoris, it's hard to see them teaching how the clitoris is structurally analogous to the penis or what this means regarding intersex conditions, or teaching about how chromosomes (genotype), actual physical development of the genitals (phenotype), hormones, and brain structure interact in determining sex and gender, or even the fact that sex and gender are not the same thing.

And no I’ve tried explaining it to him in a way he would understand and he didn’t get it because “I’m a man, why would people assume I’m a woman”. This goes double for my mother. "that's not really the ownage you think it is...." because it's essentially going "but.... the simplified biology I had explained to me as a child!" It's "basic biology" for a reason, guys. It's simplified. It's a BASIS to start with. You learn more advanced stuff later in schooling, especially if you take certain educational paths. You might as well refuse to finish building your house because you have the frame built, so the house is "built." Do you also flip out if someone tries to teach you college level algebra and tell them about the "basic math" you learned as a child? I sure hope not! Or history.... oh wait.... people very much do flip out if you try to acknowledge more nuance or details or aspects of history than what they were taught as a 12 year old.....

That reminds me, in primary school we get told that 1-4=0 because (and thats something I got explicitly told when questioned) "there can't be less than zero". That was our basic math. Honestly, judging by the inteligence of some bigots I'm suprised no one tried to say negative numbers aren't real...

@@nukiradio Were you trying to respond to Nuki Radio's post about the "identify as vaccinated" thing? What they said made no sense to me. Yes, vaccination is a simple shot and a person can't "identify" as it if they haven't had it: they're just lying, straight up. I guess Nuki's point was to insinuate that trans people are just lying too? Which is baloney because it's not the same thing as someone who believes they are a dog, or the Eiffel Tower, though people who know and understand zero about the trans experience will often compare that, to those sorts of delusions, as did medicine back before they found out that there really is a basis for being trans and it's not imaginary after all. That misunderstanding, the ignorance around the science that supports trans gender people's validity, underpins all the "identify as an attack helicopter" jokes and all their ilk. I just saw the "identify as vaccinated" as yet another ignorant iteration of that same false argument.

@@nukiradio Glad you explained, though I didn't think you were being hateful or anything like that. I was coming at it from the angle of hoping to speak against transmedicalism, the belief that a person is only valid as trans, if they undergo some specified set of medical treatments or procedures. I'm sure from what you said, that you support all trans people as valid. The "identifying as vaccinated" as I'm sure you know, calls trans people's declaration of gender a delusion or a lie, by equating it with making false claims (like being vaccinated when one isn't). It does require a response, and you gave a good one. I just wish I knew of a succinct response that wouldn't have any aspect (potentially) of transmedicalism (the idea that being trans means you must necessarily undergo medical treatments) or gatekeeping. Not accusing you any anything, though, and I do appreciate that you talked with me about this and gave me a chance to explain and to ask questions. :)

After you posted some trans content, I started to question who I was, because some of the things that you were describing felt like you were just describing me. I ended up talking to my therapist about this, took some tests with her, and found out I have body dysphoria. I always thought how i felt about my body was normal, because I never really told anyone exactly how I felt. So, I recently cut my hair and got a binder and i’m feeling more like myself then I ever have. I just wanted to thank you for being the reason I could start to identify with who I was inside rather then how people saw me on the outside.

You'd have to specify what you need refuted. In terms of perspective regarding not understanding why people can't just be what they were born as, a favorite of mine to so say "why would I choose to be talked down to by you and others like you all the time?" and they usually just say "well, idk." Because they typically don't think that far ahead and don't really care to change their viewpoint anyway, so it won't matter what you say, but they will, probably, stop bothering you about that point for a while. Most of the time, they don't really seem to know how to ask the questions, either, or really know what it is they need clarified. Like I spent a lot of time reiterating why I know I'm not interested in men even though I've never been with one because the person kept asking "but how do you know??" I kept saying because I never felt the way about boys as I did about girls, and turning the question back around on them by asking how they knew they were straight if they'd never been in a same-sex encounter. It never clicked, and the person I was talking to wasn't even homophobic, just confused and wanting to sleep with me and in their forties. So, I have assumed they weren't sure how to word what they actually needed to ask because there's no way to simplify it. Because it doesn't need to be asked. Because it's so basic. But it goes over their head somehow. One for transgender-specific: I was asked why I can't just be cis and happy being tomboyish (they used a slur, but it's fine). I asked why they were content being [their expression on the gender spectrum]. They said they were born that way. I said I was born with eyes but I need to wear glasses, no way around it, it's a necessity or I can't drive or play video games or read or cook or anything. It's not that I don't vibe with my eyes or whatever -- I NEED to wear glasses to see. I was born with certain body parts but it doesn't mean they do what I NEED them to do, be what I NEED them to be. It's not about wanting these things, it's about NEEDING them. Would I survive without glasses? Probably, sure. Would I enjoy life? No, definitely not, I'd be basically disabled and need assistance for most things. Would I survive without transitioning? Probably, sure. Would I enjoy life? No, I'm miserable and miserable people do drastic things to end their misery. Real question, why do you want me to be miserable just to make yourself feel better about your upbringing and view of the world? How would you feel if you woke up and were suddenly [opposite end of their gender spectrum]? Because that's all it is when it comes down to it. They don't like things that challenge how they think, but they aren't willing to alter that mindset in order to feel more comfortable; they expect us to change our entire essence to make them feel comfortable again. There is very little perspective you can give. It's a battle you've already lost. I've never met a rehabbed phobe who changed their mind by talking to someone; it was usually exposure that softened them to changing the way they thought about other people. In terms of realizing they said something phobic, there's also little you can do besides point it out. I have this issue with racist family members. They'll say something like, say, "black people are lazy" and I'll say, "that's racist, black people do plenty of ambitious things you just don't hear about it on the white republican news channels you watch" and they'll say, "well, most of them are lazy, anyway-" It does nothing because it's like... when you want to find orange cars on the road, you're probably thinking, "wow I've never seen an orange car" and suddenly you see two or three. You're looking for orange cars and are, therefore, more likely to actually pay attention and see them. The frequency of them hasn't changed, you just noticed it. The cashier at Aldi's was lazy and happened to be dark-skinned, since they're thinking about how sucky her race is already, they perceive a perfectly typical customer service employee's utter apathy as laziness -- which they wouldn't be so affronted about should she have been white because when white people do it, it's just an aspect of the job or some other such excuse; but for black people it's because they're, idk, genetically inclined to be worse people, I guess. I called my aunt out for her racist attitude towards Native Americans and Mexicans, and she was extremely offended for, like, two weeks and got so mad at me she moved out. Then, a month later, she's talking to my mother and saying how, "yeah, I guess I am a little racist." She hasn't changed, she just accepts it, now. She's still racist and says racist things. Because she doesn't actually care or think she's hurting anyone. No amount of discussion alters this because it's in her mind, she's persuaded herself, that the things she thinks aren't harmful because she's not a "murder all the tan-people" type of racist, she's the "Mexicans are rapists and should be avoided" type of racist. Thus, "not harmful." If the people you want to rebuttal aren't interested or are dismissive when you talk about your or non-cishet issues, they will not change. You can attempt to put it into perspective, and they might just remember it in a few years should a catalyst trigger them to change their viewpoint, but they will not change right now. They might change the language they use around you, specifically, but they won't have any serious growth. I'm not saying don't discuss, I'm just advising you not to get your hopes up. Go into it with a cynical attitude because there's a high probability you'll be the one hurt at the end of it if you go in blazing with passion.
