Thanks for that man. I have just started mine and you know what I have learned so far? It's super challenging, but going to a soul-sucking job working for someone else who doesn't really appreciate it, own your life, little to no room for advancement, that's hard. That's way harder. It's time we take accountability of our results. Now what I earn and do is all on me, it always was, but now I have far more flexibility and freedom. The hardest part is always overcoming the self.

Kindness is key. I have lost 10 clients in the past 2 years to death. Relationships I built with people I saw faithfully every week, 2 weeks, or month. The one that impacted me most in my business was the one who had me in her obituary stating how important I was to her and how at the end, her weekly visits to me was what kept her going some weeks. You just never know. I have always been kind and caring to my clients, but that added a new angle to how I interact with my clients today.

The best statement of this video is the last 5 minutes “no one talks about ageism” sooooo true! There is so much unconscious bias against older people. It’s incredibly taboo and very real. Being told you’re yesterday’s news and can’t learn and adapt anymore because you could be the mum of a colleague you’re being compared to hurts a lot. I guess it’s one way to let you know, you’re not welcome here, so pack your bag and go! You had your chance when you were young, so step down and let the young one step up. This is infuriating, and I am not talking about being 80, am talking about being in your mid-forties! No amount of Botox can help combat that! And being a top performer doesn’t help either. I know, I am talking about first hand experience.

Man, hearing Gary talk about his parents making him give a 130% when 100% was enough makes me jealous of his parents because as a kid trying to make money in the absence of an allowance, I always got in trouble. Back in Bangladesh when I was 9yo I would ride my bike out to the edge of town to this tiny broken down rickshaw garage just to buy a sheet of 100 dragon ball z stickers of $10, it was the cheapest of anywhere in town. I'd spend half an hour cutting them up and sell $2 a piece to my classmates. This went on in secret for 6 months and I had made $49 in profit, spent the rest buying samosas for my friends during lunch 😂, call it a business dinner. But when I got caught I was in a whole lot of trouble. I tried several ventures after that but there was always this fear and I never had any support or encouragement at all from my parents even to this day. They really cared about grades so I spent all my time and finished high school with 93% avg for top 6 courses. I got a 98% in English and I remember all my classmates hating me for going up to discuss feedback with my teacher even when I got a 100% on my assignment. I ended up making $100/assignment from all those hating classmates when finals rolled around ;) . But I still seriously lacked any social skills and never really got a chance to explore my creativity or other talents out of high school and headed straight into a computer science degree at a reputed university with a generous scholarship. Ended up changing programs to business because that childhood Dragon Ball Z sticker business never left me and I was hungry for more; lots more. I really wish parents supported their children's dreams and talents more in the South Asian/brown community rather than holding people up to completely outdated sociatal expectations that actually stifle innovation and progress. Thanks for reading, all the best!

I was the same too. But eventually started my business and still have family telling me to get a job to get ahead. Truth is, as parents they acted and will still act out of love but based on their perception of what is right or best for you, it is up to you to keep following your gut and instincts. Find the inner voice and compass that directs you, even if you are 60 years old now.. better late than live the rest of your days in regrets and even if you failed at least, you failed FORWARD..
