I’ve physically read it six times (I’m old AF) and I’ve gotten new things out of it each time because I’ve been at different stages of my life. Most recently (#7), I borrowed the audio book online from my local library for free, and it’s was wonderful! Really surprised at the amazing narration and storytelling for an audiobook. (Dune Messiah and Children of Dune were just as good.) The best part of listening to the audiobook for your first time read, is you won’t be tempted to look up things in the glossary which is a black hole distraction you don’t need to get lost in because the narrative will define everything for you. You’re welcome. 😊

I’ve read all 24 Dune books by Frank Herbert and his son three times in the last year and enjoyed all of them. It takes me about three weeks to read them all and I learn something new each time. My only complaint is the constant repetitiveness when reintroducing characters with their complete life history and physical description in every other chapter. I’m well aware of the similarities with Star Wars and have no problem with that since there are similarities with Isaac Asimov’s Robot-Empire-Foundation series as well and Isaac Asimov didn’t have a problem with either Frank Herbert or George Lucas borrowing from his stories as well since he based his series on another writer’s work called The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

For people who aren’t big fans of reading physical books… I listened to the audiobook in about a week after watching the movie the first time. It really expands on the movie in the first half of the book. The second half is I’m guessing what Dune Part 2 will cover. Most good movies based on books tend to be even better appreciated by reading the books. The best part is the audiobook is read with multiple voices and even background noise when it adds to the scene. It’s awesome. Not sure if it’s an extremely talented single voice reading the book or a handful but they are perfect. I just finished it tonight. Super stoked for the Part 2 movie

I've heard a lot of complaints about it, even a few about the film. They say there's no action but there is. There's so much going on even just in the background, it builds itself and the world around it in an amazing way. It's not shy about being in a grey zone morally as well. One of the biggest complaints I've heard was about Paul and I just shake my head. It's not a surface level book but it's approachable, I feel like people have just really overblown a lot of things and made it this sort of beast that you need to approach with a long stick. It's a bit like lord of the rings in the way, where its like this seemingly difficult mountain to conquer at first glance. Like lotr, the world feels alive and you have all these different factions that exist, you start to read it and then just get sort of sucked in.

If you start reading Dune and you don't quit in the first 50 pages. You are probably the right kind of nerd for Dune. I will admit some of the long philosophical passages put my patience to the test a bit but it was still worthwhile plowing through all of that the story arc alone of people latching on to a human messiah that ultimately makes everything a disaster is something everyone should wrestle with.

@@arjunk283 maybe get some good short stories under your belt first. Move up to a 200 page novel or two. Pick something from a genre you’re truly interested in. Don’t go for something everyone is reading right now because chances are you won’t get into it. That’s discouraging and if you’re just getting in to reading that could turn you away. I really encourage you to keep at it though. There will never be anything that can match the experience of reading a story you really love and the story that plays along in your mind while you read. The vivid detail can never be reproduced in film. You, along with the author create something that is unique since you are picturing how you would see the characters and settings. Plus it’s exercise for your brain. After awhile you should notice your vocabulary and spelling improve. Ignore any dumbasses that question you for reading. This movement of encouraging everyone to remain ignorant and mocking people for speaking as though they are educated is a cancer that needs to be stamped out. Good luck man.

It’s only the first fifty to 75 pages that drag. But they are important to the story. So just jump in and try to pay attention. By the time you have finished it you will be ready for the second. But you really need to commit to reading the second and third as if they were one volume. The info from messiah is needed for Children. When you’re done you’ll be glad you did. And you may find that you want to read those first 50 pages again and more carefully. Yours in spice, InscrutableJohn
