Many years ago at the motor show i watched a demo of a set of drill bits that looked just like masonry bits and the guy was drilling holes through files with them! The usual masonry bits used to have brazed tips but these were welded and were running at dull red drilling files!! They were expensive! I didnt buy them, but your demo was well impressive! That drilled a very clean hole, would be interesting to try this on stainless steel because it can be problematic to drill. I have the same drill set! Phil

Hi Phil, with a bit more tweaking I think they would cut better and a lot cheaper than solid carbide drills, I'll try them on some really tough stuff...Del..

Another handy tip for those that aren't already aware, Del, well done. I love carbide "masonry" bits. Cheap as chips and far longer than the equivalent HSS bits; and once they're resharpened, they do a cracking job. I've never bothered with a secondary relief angle on them, though, the carbide plate is usually thin enough that a single grind is enough. If you want to do deep holes, though, you might have to reduce the diameter of the tip to be the same as the fluted part, otherwise they wander (or at least they do if they've been resharpened by hand).

Thanks Si, don't think I got the cutting face just right ! will have another go and take the 7 degree's a bit deeper. How's your indexer coming along ?... Del...

@@machinenutdel6764 I'm working on the principle of making things as simple as possible, but no simpler. Realistically, the only things I need to sharpen and which require accurate indexing have either 2, 3, or 4 cutting edges. Indexing can therefore be done using a simple hex collet block. What needs to be controller, though, is infeed. I can easily bugger about with something similar to my current jig, using an adjustable stop, and I may do that short term. As simple as possible :) At some point, though. it becomes useful to make a 2 axis chassis with motor axis height adjustment, and become a full on tool and cutter grinder.

@@machinenutdel6764 And meanwhile, I have a plan for a more solid universal indexing head coming along as well. I don't think it's actually going to be that hard to do.
