Hi John and Lisa! I am planning to have a 20 gallon tank with 1 Betta, 10 Neon Tetras, 3 Kuhli Loaches, and a couple blue mystery snails from your site. In addition to this is I will have Java Fern, Anubias Bartari, and Catapa Leaves. Multiple sources have said after a tank is cycled, neons wouldn’t be the best first fish due to their lack in hardiness. So if I am putting in the Betta and Kuhli loaches in my main tank, how will my neons survive a cycled quarantine tank? Should I put the Betta and Kuhli loaches in the quarantine tank first then move them to the main tank and add the Neon Tetras to the quarantine tank? How should I approach this situation?

When I was 7 I used to keep a 2 gallon aquarium and got a common pleco. Embarrassed about my early aquarium journey but I am so proud of how the hobby has evolved for me. Just so sad about all the fish I didn’t know how to care for properly as a child. My education on caring for my fish now is largely in thanks to you John and Lisa.

I used to work at PetSmart and the common plecos were definitely one of the most mistreated. I'd try to tell people how big they'd get and customers would either a) say they didn't care, b) the ones they had before never got that big and they can just keep it small by keeping it in a small tank, or c) say they'd put it in the local lake when it got too big. It was insane!

The only fish which has been actually recorded eating p*op is the Scatophagus - But it gets 40 cm.s long (and needs, thus 500 lt.s or more) and lives in brackish or marine water; also, it will obviously prefer other food sources, given the possibility. The best thing which can, in a way, "eat" the p*op is a good vegetation - Plants will use organic waste as fertilizer. Apart from that, my clean-up crew cunsists in a Bristlenose and lots of Malayan trumpet snails, but I still do my weekly water change. The clean-up crew gives an hand, but it actually is the keeper to be responsible for the main task.

John and Lisa, Awesome video I love it so funny especially the ending. There is no fish that eats poop correct. Although if you have plants and lots of them they can help as the bacteria breaks down the poop the plants absorb it in the substrate and release oxygen and kind of filter the water also. Great job 😂❤

THANK YOU for addressing the common pleco issue!!! I wish we didn't sell them! Box stores are for BEGINNERS! And unfortunately the associates are often not educated enough on them, the customer starts a riot if they can't get their 8yr old one for their 10g or the company pushes the sales for them. They make more of a mess than anything else. Or people don't believe they get that big. Drives me crazy!

Weve all seen fish take a mouthful of another fishes poop before, and always spit it back out. Why do they do this? Its because there are still trace amounts of nutrients in it. So they take what they can get from it and discard the rest.

Are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle? It sounds like you aren't cycled yet, are experiencing bacterial blooms and you are interrupting the cycle by doing water changes. You need to water change less because it interrupts the cycling process. You can do this by dosing Seachem Prime, it detoxifies ammonia and nitrite which are poison to fish but need to be present in order to get the beneficial bacteria to grow.

I added additional aeration, live plants, and a different light on a timer, that has an adjustable light level(the fish were not happy with the plain LED-scared). I do have plenty of natural light, so the tank light is only set for 6hrs. I do weekly water changes. But, I'm getting hair algea. All my standard parameters are good. It's only a 10gallon tank. What is my best course of action?
