When I was a kid I wasn't impressed with him, I thought "what was the fuss all about, he's just some old craggy faced guy ". Now I'm nearly his age when he sadly left us and I know what the fuss was all about. Everything he was in was elevated to a higher level because of his presence. Name any movie he was in and the memory of it stays with the viewer. He was every man and everything every man wanted to be. Charming, sophisticated, tough, funny and believable, always totally believable in every role. Rest in peace William Holden and thank you.

I was a star-struck teen new to California when I saw him in a Hollywood restaurant and asked him for his autograph which he kindly gave to me. I just recently rediscovered William Holden while watching TCM (Turner Classic Movie), which showed the movie "Rachel and the Stranger". I love the movie, recorded it and I watch it often. Holden was absolutely Gorgeous, it's a shame that he aged so terribly because of his alcoholism. But although his looks faded due to the alcohol abuse he kept his beautiful smile and wonderful disposition. He was a Great Actor.

William Holden was a kind and thoughtful man. Be cared so much about the wildlife in Africa and started a conservatory there. That was so close to his heart. My favorite film was The Earthling with Ricky Schroeder that came out in 1980. It's a tearjerker set in Australia. William and Ricky developed a close bond while making that picture. Even Ricky had a family, he named his son Holden after his dear friend. What a true gem he was!!!

William Holden loved the African wildlife and started a conservatory to help preserve their habitat. My favorite movie w/him is 'The Earthling' in 1980. Set in Australia w/Ricky Schroeder. It's about a young boy who loses his parents in a terrible accident and an old man who wants to go back home to die alone but they both cross paths and I won't say anymore in case you have never seen it. It's truly a wonderful movie. They developed a close bond together while filming. After Ricky had a family, he named his son Holden after his dear friend. William was a gentleman and a lovely man who should be remembered for all the good he stood for and was in him.

While many of the great actors are gone - the real men that represented American grit, fortunately some greats are still with us - - Clint Eastwood, Kirk Douglas, Duvall, Hackman, Loggia, etc. At the very least, we will have them forever in the gift of art they have given to all of us.

William Holden was a member of our family, and we couldn't be prouder. I wish he could have lived longer, and made more movies for us to enjoy. The manner he died has also been a lesson to us. Drinking is okay; getting intoxicated is not. Living alone, and dying alone, without having anyone to check on them for 4 days, is a tragedy no one should have to face. RIP, Cousin William. Yes. Thank you Jerry for some very informative , knowledgeable anecdotes on these great Actors & Actresses , As you will probably agree the overwhelming similarity of a lot of these cases is of Sadness , Loss of Hope , Despair and in most cases a tragic demise/Death. Having been an actress myself the one drug you miss after you stop performing is Audience Adulation , And in many cases some resort to Drink & Drugs to fill that Void . Many as we have witnessed dont survive long after they are out of the limelight !!

Jerry, I am an old school southern boy. (I am sure just saying that has offended multitudes.) I read all, I think, of the remarks. I wanted to see if there was anything I didn't already know, there wasn't. I did learn a lot of people overvalue their negative opinion. William Holden was my idol (I guess) he was on screen what I thought a real man should be. I think my perception of his strength of character inspired me in tough times. I loved the actor. I am not sure that I would have liked the man or his politics. But I am unshakable in my conviction that, had I known him, I would have respected him.
