Johnny actually played this entire song on a 6 string. He used Nashiville Tuning (stringing a 6 string guitar with the bottom 4 strings from a 12 string to get that jangle). Well done, thank you for the video.

I think you've nailed it, sounds spot on! Many thanks for taking the time to do it. The guitar looks like a 12 string version of the Burns Gaz Coombes used during his Supergrass years.

Its not exact, I am certain others do it better, but to me its all about the vibe and getting it to sound close with just one guitar. Regarding the Burns, yes you're dead right - Gaz Combes played a Burns at one point

There are moments when I think I’m there, …a decent guitarist… but then there’s this … nothing quite like Marr is there? Complicated but somehow born out of simplicity and being so familiar with the instrument under his fingers. You’ve bloody nailed it here though, congratulations!

Every time I watch this lesson - and I have watched it almost every day since discovering it last week - it just makes me want to reach for my guitar. There is so much to like about this lesson: firstly, the MASSIVE guitar; secondly, how you demystify what is played; but most of all, it leaves me in awe as to how someone can come up with guitar parts like Johnny Marr does.

That's the magic of Smith's songs is that Johnny's guitar is practically a second voice to Morrissey's lead. I too wonder how Marr imagined these melodies while contemplating Morrissey's gloomy and ironic lyrics and finding the right composition for each song.

Did you buy this guitar from a guy in Wimbledon? I sold mine on eBay for 400. Would be nice to think it has a good home and has found fame. Johnny Marr used a 6 string with Nashville Tuning I think (citing Smiths On Guitar for this), with overdubbing. 12 string will sound like a Nashville tune plus a normal, so perfect really. This vid came up on my tube suggestions, I thought, I recognise that guitar...

This is the lesson I keep coming back to learn this song, as I believe it's the most accurate. But the frustration I have is the "it's that one" or "do this". Do what? I've paused the video frame by frame to count frets and which strings to play. Could you overlay a tab or something to help? Thanks, it really does sound great.

Yeah it an acquired taste to say the least. Finding an electric 12 string is not easy unless you want to spend a lot of cash. Also, the Rickenbacker 12 has such a small neck it's really hard to play unless you have smaller hands. I tried a few when on the hunt, the purchase was fuelled by QOTSA I Appear Missing - Troy Van Leuwan plays it with such skill and its an absolute bitch to play
