I saw this live when I was a kid and was very devastated as well. Many of Martina's approaches were not deep enough. She gave Conchita too much time to hit winners. Martina also did not take advantage of her forehand. She had many opportunities to hit potential winners on the forehand side. Martina was not on top of her game in this match. She would have been destroyed by someone like Seles if she played her that day.

Some years later, Martina Navratilova was incredibly ungracious and rude about Conchita and this match, saying: "I won nine singles titles at Wimbledon but it should have been 10," "Conchita never did it again. She never played that well again because she just doesn't care. And that's what bugs me. I would rather have beaten her and lost to Zina Garrison in 1990, because Zina was working her ass off and would have given anything to win. The girl (Martinez) took the money and ran." Sadly, I think that's Martina Navratilova's massive, fragile ego talking. Conchita won because she had Martina's number (4-1 head to head). Conchita didn't have Steffi's Monica's, Jana's or Arantxa's number and Martina can't accept that Conchita beat her in a grand slam final but not the others. Sadly, Martina Navratilova has been unpleasant over the years about a number of tennis players, ranging from accusing Steffi Graf of faking injuries, calling Serena Williams a "drama queen", belittling Naomi Osaka when she was suffering from depression, criticising Nick Kyrgios when he was suffering from quite bad mental health issues and of course the embarrassing episode when she complained about Monica Seles grunting at Wimbledon. Martina's former partner Toni Layton alleged that Martina was still unhealthily obsessed with Chris Evert and was convinced that Evert's tournament win tally was false - thinking of ways that she could get the WTA to revise Evert's tally downwards. There's much to be admired about Martina Navratilova. But there's also a lot that's not.

Well said! It doesn’t matter MARTINA that you think you deserve another Wimbledon, Conchita beat you on that day and moment and that’s what it’s about… some people are just desperate for numbers and being greatest. It makes a real ugly personality.

That's really well said - I'm said about Martina having cancer again, I respect her opinions, she is learned about tennis history, but she's mercurial. She has also said that her racquet was strung at the wrong tension here; and the Seles grunting complaint, following on from Tauziat - now that's an ungracious person - seemed really snarky. I actually interviewed her twice, once by phone (she was in Colorado) in about 2008 after her diet and fitness book came out, and a second time in the flesh a few years later when she visited Jakarta. I've played tennis from when I was a kid and love the history of the game - I was gifted Clerici's "Ultimate Tennis Book" at age 10 and still have a copy - so I was asking her questions and more questions about her career and tennis during the phone interview. And after 15 minutes she blurted out, "Geez, don't you have enough already?" She's pretty blunt.

@@brucee6123 I definitely think Ted Tinling's famous line about her was true: "She goes from arrogance to panic with nothing in-between". There's a lot of the classic Narcissist about her - a lot of self entitled grandiosity, with a very fragile ego if you scratch the surface. She definitely was unpopular with the crowds in the 80s. Some of that clearly was homophobia, but it was more than that. A lot of it was because she could come across as a fairly unlikeable brat. Indeed, Rosie Casals used to nickname her "Navrat the brat".

I was friends with Martina for several years and knew her to be gracious, kind and witty. She is blunt and to the point. You know where you stand with her. The issue is she was never given media training and sometimes she isnt the most tactful in her comments, but they do not come from a place of unkindness; she shares her opinion if you ask her and she will say it like it is. Some comes from this lack of polish, the rest from the fact she wears her heart on her sleeve. Her humor also didn't always translate well in certain instances, but everyone knew it came from a genuine place. I never found her to be self centered or narcissistic in my presence.

playing on forehand and attack on backand. That was Cardon's coaching. With Graf and with Martinez. And it was wrong! Both knew where the ball was supposed to go. It's wrong! Navratilova had to play all court, even loosing a few points, but pushing pressure on the opponent. And trying to have a little of fun while playing. What a stupid strategy. Back sharp attacks on the forehand of the opponent: I think Navratilova did it in her best matches with Seles, most of all when the match came to the topic point and she played instinctivly. Because that was the game. Cardon Cardon...

Bud Collins talking bs about Steffi only 'outrunning' Martina in 1988 and 1989. She was the better player in those finals, period. Takes nothing away from Martina's awe inspiring record, but let's be real.

Martina saying “ Enough” was heart breaking. For someone who usually wanted her opponent to win in Martina’s Wimbledon finals I wanted this one Badly for her. Of all the players Martina deserved the distinction of winning 10 Wimbledon titles. Conchita Martinez is not 1/20 of the player Navratilova was. I believe Martina had it in her head that she was not going to win that third set. In a way she realized like all of us that it wouldn’t change anything because her r3cord of 9 wins had already been accomplished. I wanted this win to be for her. Thanking her for putting up with all of us who were slow to recognize her talents and recognition for the great loving fair person she is as a human being. No one has had more lucky days on that court. Winning those matches in the last ten minutes where she couldn’t do wrong where today Conchita hit winner after winner and never played half as good.Conchita channeled Martina’s previous win playing like she couldn’t make a mistake. Martina absolutely ran out of gas after the first game of the match.

Conchita played even better in the clay season of 95 where she had a 25 match win streak, and would have won the French that year if she didn't play her worst match of the whole clay season in the French semis with Graf. She destroyed people like Sanchez, Sabatini, Hingis, Pierce during that run.

@@rolandgreen7484 those names you mentioned at end of your comment are also tans not tennis greats . They reached moments of playing great but couldn’t sustain that Ike graf or Evert. When you beat graf, evert, Navratilova like Hana did at Open in 85 Then your an all time great. Hana just crossed that “ great” line when winning the 85 open. She was able to rely on winning when she had a great day as in 87 AO beaing Martina. She lost 3 slam titles to Chris and when she did beat Chris played superbly and deserved it in 85 open Sf and the Wimbledon 86 Sf . I feel sorry for Hana that she wasn’t able to win a few key points in her 86 Wimbledon final. She played equal to Martina but lost by a hair- almost a repeat of Martina’s 84 Wimbledon win. I believe Chris played her best final at Wimbledon in 84 and she lost in straight sets. That shows you how well Martina played in that final. Grass equals Wimbledon equals Martina in the way Clay equals Evert. Love Martina and Chris.

@@lenwelch2195 Fine but Martina was 37. It was not surprising someone like Conchita could beat her. She was way past her prime, it is not like this is beating a prime Martina. She even lost in straight sets to 15 year old Capriati 3 years before this, and to Monica Seles, who sucks on grass even at her peak, 2 years before this. Martina was not the dominant player on grass by now, and had not been for awhile. That was Graf since 88.
