I find these are perfect for en plain air, all you need are your brushes, some water and your painting pad which all fit easily into a small bag, no fuss! So convenient and quite versatile. I use them for sketchbook work and add inks and pastel creating some very nice colour schemes. Just needs some imagination and they more or less do what you want. Happy Painting 🌹🎨🌞.

No way! These are lightfast? I saw these at Michael's a few months back and dismissed them as just another set of dye based markers. I use a set of Tombows the same way you demonstrated by scribbling on a piece of plastic, but it killed me inside that whatever I created with them would have to be confined to my sketchbook forever. Thanks for reviewing these, I definitely have to go grab a couple.

@Adam- Thanks for the input Adam. I agree I think the markers are primarily a good sketching tool. Or perhaps local spot color in an ink line and wash piece. That was my main interest frankly and probably the first thing I'll explore. That is, it seems, how so many people tend to use Copics. Good idea on the neutrals. To be honest, my best grays seem to happen by accident but still a good avenue to explore.

I have been waiting for a good review of these. I have some letraset aquamarkers, and tombow, which I never fool with anymore except for my son's school projects, they are so so but nothing special. I do love WN paints, and I am like you, if they put their name on it then I generally trust it. These would be great for sketching and such I think. If you ever need ideas in the future, I would love to see your take on mixing neutrals. I have a tendency to always fall back on pthalo green and aliz crimson, or like a blue and a brown, then I cant leave it alone and constantly fool with it. I would be interested in seeing how you do your greys, neutrals, warm, and cools. Thanks for another great video.

Thank you for the review, Steve. I've never been a marker person for anything other than marking boxes for moving! ;) I saw these come out and was impressed by W&N as a maker and, especially, that they are pigment based rather than dyes. I'm looking forward to seeing your projects using these. Most of the demos I've seen are scrapbooking and card creation. No offense meant to anyone who does that type of art, I would just like to find out why I'd want to pull these out instead of my standard watercolors. Thanks, again - always informative and helpful!

A problem with some illustration mediums unfortunately. Just keep them stored in the dark and especially away from UV light (windows fluorescents) and you can preserve then for the most part. If you want to frame and hang one, get a good digital scan and have a print made to frame.

Again thanks for all the videos about WN watercolor marker--I remember when I asked you about them and after the videos I bought 12 marker set. The one thing is the Alizarin Crimson came with the fine end of the marker popping off when I tried to take off the fine nib cap off. This color dried out quick and Blick (where I ordered them on line) promptly replaced it. Still I thought I would try to refill this marker even though WN did not mean for these to be refilled. I popped off the fine nib marker end and mixed up artist grade permanent Alzarin Crimson and put in 0.5 ml the large felt reservoir area in the marker barrel (it was slightly too much. Now the marker is quite juicy and like new (minus a small wear on the fine nib). Thought I would let you know about my experiment with the WN Marker. Della

d phil Interesting! Thanks for the input. I have one fine point nib that is almost dry so I will try refilling mine also. I did notice the cap grabbing problem with a few of mine too. In some cases the cap pulls the whole tip out. I stopped it by taking the cap off as though I'm breaking the marker (bending the cap down) rather than pulling it straight off.

Hello Steve and thanks for responding to my first comment so quickly. Here's another. Have you tried using these on Yupo yet? I have some and I just received a few of the WN H20 Markers today. I had no other paper on hand except some Stonehenge.......not a good surface for me. The Yupo takes a bit of time to dry but I really like the translucence. Since Yupo is a cellulose paper I was wondering what the difference is between the two.......Thanks
@mindofwatercolor
9 жыл бұрын
Judith A Rowland Thanks for the input Judith. I was wondering about how they perform on Yupo myself. I've only tested them on standard WC paper. I bet its a pretty neat combination. I don't think Yupo is made of cellulose though. Its a synthetic, polypropylene I believe. Cellulose is simply wood fiber and its what most paper is made of (cheaper WC papers in particular). Rag or cotton is what high quality WC paper is usually made of like Arches or Fabriano. If paper is made of 100% cotton it will usually say so because the manufacture will want you to know. Cellulose paper can have acid in it and is not archival unless the maker has removed it. It will say so if its acid free.

I'm surprised that you didn't list Handprint in the description, even if it is a bit outdated it's still the site with the most information about art supplies and lightfastness. The Markers seems like a viable way for sketching and doing detail work on perhabs larger works, but they seem to miss out on some of the more fun granular pigments like Cobalt blue or some of the earths and a few of the the colours judging from the names seem to be in the catergory of 'bad lightfastness' like alizarin crimson, really a shame :/ Can you do a painting using them to show more of their characteristics? And I can't wait to see a video on lightfastness since nobody on youtube ever really talks or goes into detail about it! Cheers Anne

The Mind of Watercolor Thanks! But still no pigments listed, and I'm geeky about it, hence I like handprint so much, haha. Not a big deal after all, I'm just saying. Most of them are very lightfast anyway, and markers are used in a different fashion.
@mindofwatercolor

SanderC That chart does have the lightfast rating which is good. Totally understand about pigment numbers. I'm a bit geeky about it also. Most of those pigment codes are listed in their standard watercolor charts. You have to look at both the Cotman (for hues) and regular artist's color charts to find them all.

Thanks for another informative video. Look forward to more. My guest ion is if you already have watercolor paints why use the marker on a pallet. Is it because the pigment is richerthen the paints?
@mindofwatercolor
9 жыл бұрын
Carolyn Rose No, its not any richer. You're absolutely right. You wouldn't need to use markers if all you did was palette them. Paletting is merely a supplementary way to augment their use. Markers are preferred by some for the ability to draw with them or perhaps color in an expressive stroke using rich, even color application. They are a lot less messy than tubes and pans too. Their unique application opens up possibilities but they aren't for everyone.

Finally received the two markers that I ordered to try them out, and I am glad I only got two. Very disappointed. I tried them on 2 brands of admittedly cheap watercolor paper and the color is very very hard to pull out. Not at all what I expected. I will try them again on other paper brands when I get a chance, but I find it sad that you need a special paper for them to work properly. Other experiences anyone?

+Mrs. Mom Next Door Copy paper will definitely stain. There is no sizing in it, which is what keeps the paint on the surface Quality paper is essential. The markers work well on my Arches paper but it will leave a little bit of a stroke stain. You should still be able to move a lot of the color around.

I guess I got a really bad batch! I am just confused as to what the problem is! I tried as many different thickness and types of paper. Mine is not moving like my watercolor paint, not even a little bit? SO strange! But thank you!
@mindofwatercolor
9 жыл бұрын
+Mrs. Mom Next Door Thickness of paper won't matter. Its how much sizing is in the paper and on the surface of the paper. You have to try Arches if you haven't already. It might keep you from abandoning the markers you've already invested in. The least expensive is to get pads of 9x12 Arches paper. I get them all the time at Hobby Lobby for 40% off. (About $12). I just tested it again and the marker color rewets and moves almost 100%. A cheaper paper like Strathmore 400 stains badly. Another alternative is the Winsor Newton Marker paper they sell just for these markers. Its just watercolor paper sized (coated) especially for these markers and its not real expensive either. Don't give up yet!

I am late to this but as this relates back to 14 Apr 2015 I was wondering if a re-review was due? Curious to know if anyone has tested how lightfast they are? Do you have to use exactly that paper for these markers or can you use regular watercolour paper?
@mindofwatercolor
7 жыл бұрын
No you can use regular watercolor paper but the markers tend to stain a bit more. The Winsor Newton paper has a little more size and stains less.

Once the marker "dries" on the paper can it still be worked? Sorry if this is a silly question ☺️
@mindofwatercolor

Yes, some. Depending on the paper it will stain some also. In other words leave marks that won't rework.

What other pads are good for working on, it seems it is very hard to get hold of the marker pen pad here in the UK

Test it with your existing wc paper. The markers do tend to stain a bit so be aware.

+Maria Kellner Ah, thanks! I often get French and Italian made supplies crossed up. I don't have any Maimeriblu but the reviews I've read are very good. Glad you like them.

Yes, although the marks tend to stain more and not completely dissolve.

Hi Adam! Iwoonder if markers are more easy to use as tools when you are traveling or if is better to use travels pallet? I going to travel soon and I want to do some watercolors painting on the way.

Travel palette. Markers actually take up a good bit of room if you have a few colors.

+Mirta Xiomelys Cabrera If you already have tube paint and just need a palette, something like this works well. amzn.to/1T69AvD If you need the paint too and can afford artist quality pigments something like this amzn.to/1T68K1L or amzn.to/1NIC1ex For less expensive grades travel paints these are good amzn.to/1T69bJC or amzn.to/1NIC9KU

Kanzee You shouldn't have any problem with light WC paper like 90 lb. The color comes out rich but not super wet.
