The mountains have finally been blanketed with snow. More snowstorms and low temperatures were forecast for the weekend. Perfect conditions to go on a real winter camping trip. I packed my rucksack and, without thinking long, set off.
I found an unpaved trail. I was maybe the second person who decided to go hiking in this area that day. After nearly 40 minutes of walking, I reached a crossroads where I decided to go cross-country to find the ideal place to camp. I put on my snowshoes and continued my trek.
Pushing through snowdrifts and shoveling fallen snow off branches, I reached my destination.
The bivouac site was a small field on the edge of a spruce, pine and beech forest. The snow cover was not deep so I decided to set up camp traditionally with the help of a tarp. The wall of the nearby forest proved to be a good shelter from possible snowfall.
I tied the tarp to a tree and to a snowshoe buried in the snow.
A moment to relax and it was time to start gathering firewood. Despite the low temperatures, the wood turned out to be very wet. I decided to harvest considerable amounts of beech and hazel. I prepared thin branches of juniper and spruce as kindling.
Due to the wet wood, I had to work harder than usual to light the fire. For this purpose, I used a flint and resin wood. The emergency spruce shavings I had prepared earlier also helped.
Time for a well-deserved meal. For dinner, I had envisaged beef with Asian-style vegetables. I carefully selected the best ingredients - onions, spring onions, red peppers, broccoli, ginger, garlic, lime, spices, soy sauce and, of course, premium organic beef.
I lightly toasted the dish in a steel skillet, which gave it an exceptionally good flavour.
After dinner, I lit the paraffin lamp.
I spent the evening warming myself by the fire and sipping tea brewed with pine shoots.
The morning greeted me with a light but freezing fog. I decided to wait for the weather to improve and emerged from my sleeping bag around ten-thirty. A few sips of tea from the thermos and it was time to start a fire. I decided to use the wood I had obtained the day before.
I started a campfire. For breakfast, I served beans in tomato sauce on top of fried onions and garlic. I boiled water from the snow to make tea from spruce twigs. The whole thing tasted delicious.
There was a heavy snowfall. The tarpaulin roof was completely covered in white powder. It was a pleasure to watch these beautiful natural circumstances.
It was time to pack up the camp.
I unearthed the lashings buried in the snow with a shovel.
I folded the tarp and packed my rucksack. I dressed my snowshoes and set off.
It was a very successful winter camping trip!
Happy viewing!
