Love the content, hate the hoarding. Just getting out of hoarding season up here and can't wait to lay out in the fresh air.

Hello Chad! Excellent craftsmanship! Curious question, why do you stagger step the fire brick on the back rather that tilting them in a bit for a flush smooth finish? Truly appreciate your videos and thanks for sharing! 😁👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Chad wants a full width of brick on the back wall for strength, plus it's probably easier than laying them on edge. When they are on edge you can toss a log right through it!

@@robertgrist8496 Yes, flat with an angled mortar bed on the first course so the back wall is leaned into the side walls. That way the face of the wall is flush and smooth.

I started doing them like this when I started noticing cracking in the back corners of fireplaces I built the other way. I have been wondering lately if I could start building them with a slanted back wall again, considering the insulation may help with expansion, preventing cracking. It is considerably easier to build them with a flat, slanted back wall.

Like using the PLS spec-mix. I usually just add an extra trowel of lime to help the consistency when using it for brick. Great video!

I actually think it was the best premix I've used so far. I'll definitely be buying that over the other products in my area.

Arbortech with one blade on might be good for grinding those thin joints.

I hate my arbortech. I would rather leave it home in the bag.

Hey mate, love your work. Just wondering how much you Corbell each course of bricks on the back of the combustion chamber?
@chadvaillancourt
3 ай бұрын
It's usually around 3/16" but can change with the overall depth of the damper and the depth/height of the fireplace. A narrow-throat damper would need slightly more corbel to get the brick perfect in line with the inside edge of the damper.

@@chadvaillancourtthanks for your reply. Just wondering what size firebricks you use? The bricks I will be using are 3" thick. So In my case for a 23" rise over a 7" run, means I have to overhang about 1" per course. Maybe I'm missing something here...

These firebrick are two inches or slightly over. Don't forget you can hold your damper back from the front wall a bit to help lessen that number. You could also buy a wide-mouth damper or make the fireplace shallower. If you make it less than twenty iches deep, you'll have to set your damper twelve inches above the lintel.
