For the first time, all five surviving Maine two-foot gauge steam engines were brought together. A number of photo specials were operated on the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway of Alna, ME where, in partnership with the Maine Narrow Gauge Railway Museum and the help of Maine Locomotive & Machine Works, three different operating engines brought together to recreate what was once a sight of 24" gauge steam from the late 19th century to 1933.
Regular power on the WW&F is 0-4-4T #9. It was joined by Monson 0-4-4T #3 and Bridgton & Saco River 2-4-4T #7 for a series of runbys. All three engines have been restored in the last five years, and this was the first time all three were brought together for a variety of photo opportunities. Monson #4 and B&SR #8 were also brought in for photos around the turntable.
With authentic 24" gauge equipment being operated through snow covered terrain in below freezing temperatures, it was a fitting tribute to the two-foot gauge steam of Maine as it once was.
