"I was near town or was walking out of town, or into town, or on the fringes of town, or PENNSYLVANIA." I love that you casually toss an entire state into that string. LOL.

Those one-and-done yeast infection pills are CLUTCH. Also, I’d definitely recommend having a designated “dry” underwear set for sleeping and brining rain pants. I like to bring an empty plastic water bottle covered in duct tape as my “gross trash” container. I’ve found having the lid helps with the whole…smell thing.

I just want to add that sometimes it can be inconvenient or hard to find places to change tampons or empty menstrual cups when you are thru hiking and trying to do a lot of miles, but toxic shock syndrome is still a thing so make sure you remember to find the time and privacy you need to deal with that before it could become a problem. Menstrual cups are definitely much better for this since you can safely go longer before emptying it. I just did the CDT last year and there are long sections with no privacy or cover whatsoever like in the basin in Wyoming which made it much harder than the AT which has a privy every 10-15mi and lots of trees and bushes. Sometimes you gotta just look both ways and hope for the best.

As always, you are fantastic! I haven't gone the long distance that you have, but thought I'd add the pstyle. I have one and love that I don't have to drop all my bottom layers to "go". If I have elastic topped pants, you only have to pull down the front enough to "you know". If I have pants with a fly, I use my father's boxers and don't lower anything - completely covered! As a bonus, the boxers allow me to breathe as my own body doesn't like it's own sweat. I don't share that much, but cotton pickin, it works! Oh, the harder pstyle works better for me than silicone as silicone is flexible. You don't want flexible helping to hold your pants down when you're "busy" and worrying whether someone is coming around the corner. Happy Trails to all of you wonderful women (and men)!!!

Being a male I thought this flog was interesting even though most did not apply to me. Love your flogs please keep posting. The new class of 2024 AT Thru Hikers are waiting to start their respective journeys and your pistols are helpful to us. ❤😊

Yes! To all you said. I'm a female w abnormal discharge. I did choose to carry 2 kula cloths and multiple underwear for the PCT. Dampness all day everyday. Thank you for addressing. Tracking period was super helpful for me too on trail.

Good tips. I use an app to track my cycles and I take my basal temperature every day so I know when I'm about to get my period. I found my periods were more manageable / lighter during a thru hike. I swear by Body Glide for anti-chafing! I found the salt from my sweat would cause chafing, so keeping clean with wipes or a damp cloth helps too.

I highly recommend buying a menstrual cup or two before the trail, and using them enough to get comfortable with them before you go out. I used the Intimina Lily Cup Compact, which collapsed down into about a quarter-wide diameter disk for storage. It took up virtually no pack space, and I didn't have to carry out any used products. It was the best solution I've found to menstruation on long distance hikes.

Great tips! I haven’t decided whether I want to use a tracking app + menstrual cup on trail (this is what I usually do) or see my gynecologist and get approved to use the patch without an “off” week. I think that might be nice, since it would take away the period entirely, but I also prefer being off birth control, so we’ll see!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience on the AT. Regarding women's safety, I hike alone a lot (in the UK, where we can't carry any kind of weapon). I generally feel pretty safe but I would add that it's important to be able to hear what's going on around you (so be careful if using headphones to have one ear free) and also maybe to learn a few self defence techniques (Nicole Snell has some great short videos on her channel).

I’ve tried them and I wasn’t the biggest fan but I do know that some people love them! If I added any extra gear to my setup for potty stuff it’d be a collapsible wide mouth Nalgene. I’ve seen people use those to pee in at night so you aren’t stuck leaving your warm tent if it’s freezing outside.

I use one- had to try it the hype-but actually, there are many circumstances where I love it. The back vestibule at night when I don’t wanna leave my tent, when there’s a lot of traffic around and I don’t want to bear my bottom to everybody you just stand up like a man nobody sees anything it’s great. I was worried about “spillage” there wasn’t any I’ve had no problems.

I didn’t myself but that’s not to say they weren’t being used. I’d suggest a mini soap like Dr Bronners for a better clean on products than hand sanitizer.
