That's a pretty sweet setup :) Learning to hammock camp and finding what works for YOU is a big part of the process. Enjoy.

a good way to know if a baby deer has been abanded or not is the ears... that deer had nice straight strong ears... if the ears look saggy... kind of like a crumpled-up piece of paper... it means that the deer is massively dehydrated and mom hasn't been around for a few days... in that case please call DNR or the forest service...😉

I just want to add that sometimes it can be inconvenient or hard to find places to change tampons or empty menstrual cups when you are thru hiking and trying to do a lot of miles, but toxic shock syndrome is still a thing so make sure you remember to find the time and privacy you need to deal with that before it could become a problem. Menstrual cups are definitely much better for this since you can safely go longer before emptying it. I just did the CDT last year and there are long sections with no privacy or cover whatsoever like in the basin in Wyoming which made it much harder than the AT which has a privy every 10-15mi and lots of trees and bushes. Sometimes you gotta just look both ways and hope for the best.

Good call on the taxes. That had not yet crossed my mind. I've decided I'm going in 2026. I have done most of the maryland section and I know I need to do this. I am overweight but I am starting to prepare.

Looks like a nice setup. You should look into a DD hammock. Double layered to place a sleep Matt between layers, bug net, and a spreader bar on both ends. Just a thought

This is cool. I want to make an easy thermal sleeve inside my yeti backpack to easily toss in food for when i go to work. Buying a sun visor is something i did not think about. Im sure i could make a sleeve big enough to throw in food and slim ice packs.

I run my tarp in one set of snakeskins and my hammock in a second set. That avoids the wet tarp issue and allows me to set up just my tarp for a lunch break in the rain, or set up the tarp quickly in the rain and then set my hammock up under the tarp while staying dry. Other commenters added good tips re: pegs, location, drip lines, etc. Setting up hammocks is like golf - you get better every time but are always chasing perfection. Stay safe on the trails.

I thought the Post Office had a priority box that ships for same price, no matter how much it weighs. The boxes you have are not the official post office ones
