welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
the exploding bowl.
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a log into a natural edge bowl, the outcome was a little more than i had planned.
woodturning can be very dangerous and as the title suggests the bowl i was making exploded while i was finishing the tenon.
As a production woodturner i have turned the tenon off the bottoms of more bowls than i care to remember. however in the case of this bowl i stupidly rushed a few vital safety steps.
i feel that experience can sometimes lead to complacency and because i have become confident in my ability to tun the same shape bowl day in day out i became complacent with my normal approach to safety
Filming while woodturning can be distracting as i have an extra thing to think about that is never normally there while i work.
its fair to say i was rushing this piece as i was planning to finish some of my pressing production work once i was done with shooting.
I was in two minds wether or not to post this video.
Im sure the comments section will be flooded with both positive and negative feedback, but i hope that both beginners and seasoned woodturners alike can take something from my mistakes. not necessarily in the approach to removing a tenon but more in the approach to safe practice over all.
what went wrong ?
firstly, when reverse mounting a bowl on the lathe i would normally use my chuck extension or i would mount a jam chuck in the chuck.
this keeps the bowl rim away form the headstock.
my first mistake in this set up was to skip this step leaving the rim of the bowl way to close to the headstock.
secondly, when turning away the tenon i turned the nib that is vital for stability way too small, at this point i should have removed the bowl from the lathe and sanded by hand. i didnt.
when i went in to sand the foot of the bowl the slightest pressure caused the nib to fail, as the nib dislodged from the tail stock the bowl tilted on its axis causing the rim to connect with the headstock of the lathe.
The result, a trip to the local A&E to stitch up the hefty laceration to my right ring finger, not to mention the loss of a beautiful bowl.
