Ronald D. Moore was the TNG writer who focused the most on the klingons. He saw their race as very Shakespearean and came up with all of the stuff about various noble families and houses and so on. In TOS, the Klingons were mostly intended to be a vast authoritarian empire, constantly in a state of Cold War. Mirroring a US/ Soviet Union scenario. When Star Trek got revitalized with movies and a new show, Suddenly the biggest nemesis, and later a major power/ ally, needed a whole lot more depth if you wanted to go their direction. Given the general TNG weak reception of the early version of a more war-like Ferengi, It was an obvious place to expand, espeially given Worf's popularity. Develop his backstory, you by nature develop his people's. I always wish TNG did more with the Romulans, To me the Warbird is the best ship in the show. (Always felt Sela was a missed opportunity for a role in Nemesis.)

It is cool how Worf is our example of a Klingon, but when we meet more Klingons we find (to our surprise) that many of them are less honorable. They are well aware of their traditions, but they subvert them for their own interests or pragmatic reasons, and actively suppress their dishonorable actions from the public. It makes you realize that Worf is perhaps the most honorable of the whole bunch, despite being raised by humans and bearing his dishonored family name, he follows the best parts of their tradition more than most Klingons. I do find the Klingon culture to be such a breath of fresh air compared to the Federation and some of the other alien races like the Vulcans and Romulans. The Klingons may seem very simple at first, but there's a lot of depth and layers to their society. For example, they would rather die in battle than survive, and even apply that to their comrades. The humans want to rescue their friends, but Klingons don't dare to ruin their moment of glory. There's an episode where a Federation officer (who shall not be named here) seems to die and Worf is the only one who is not mourning for them. Instead he says he is happy that they died in the line of duty, like a true warrior, and suggests that they throw a grand feast in their honor to celebrate them. That's a fascinating way to look at life.

And yes, they had a war with the Federation, lasting variously as 2347-54, or 2358-63, or even well into TNG, up to 2367, considering on when it can be said to have ended 'formally', with a treaty. The Setlik III massacre is tied to O'Brien's backstory and biography, and due to uncertainties in that, occurred either in 2347, or 2362, depending on which details you take to be consistent (he was said to have only entered Starfleet in 2351, in Deep Space Nine, later, where he is a main cast member) Anyway, just a few background notes.

Mr. O'Brien and Keiko, along with Mr. Worf, are cross-over characters on DS9 so you will get to know them better in that series. I view Mr. O'Brien as the Scotty of this era of Star Trek. The Cardassians play a huge role in DS9 for sure, and their culture is explored extensively through multiple recurring Cardassian characters. BTW, I think those Cardassian helmets were a one-time thing. I don't ever remember seeing them in DS9. Overall, DS9 does a great job introducing new alien species and their cultures. The station's crew itself is culturally very diverse, and by the conclusion of the series, all the major species from the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma quadrants are "mixing it up" with DS9 at ground zero.

First episode: Of course the Romulans are involved ! Remember the double episode with Sela... it is the direct sequel to Reunion, story wise. The cry Worf makes at the death of his mate is not just a super sayan thingy, it is the way of the Klingon to symboloze the soul of a fallen warrior going to Stovokorr, Klingon's equivalent to Walallah. Also Worf has a Right of Vengeance against the one who killed a beloved one. Duras family dishonor started two centuries prior in Enterprise series. Captain Archer had some shenanigans with the Duras of the time and Archer even was convicted in front of a Klingon court to be sent to Rura Penthe... (the Klingon gulag from ST VI) Funny you mention liking Klingon culture. I remember a ST fan magazine back about 20 years ago stating that the ultimate proof that Roddenberry didn't know how to make his characters interesting was the proemiance of Klingon culture in the show ! Notice that this is the second time we see a Klingon Chancelor be assassinated... Kempec was the Klingon ruler who lasted the longest is recent Klingon History... Second episode: Keep in mind the consequences of this episode; it's the future treaty with the Federation that will force Cadassia out of Bajoran space and basically allow the creation of DS9... The main Cardassian is played by an actor that will play another Cardassian (supposed to be same but thanks to intellectual property, they had to change the name) in DS9 that will be ine of the most influencial villains of the whole franchise. Think of Cardassians as Germans during WW2. A proud people with a ancient and vast culture desperately trying to gain more space for a mistakenly percieved need, pushed by propaganda after a big economic crisis.

The Klingon "Sword" is called a Bat'leth (Sword of Honour). It was designed by visual effects producer Dan Curry, who is a martial arts expert, basing it on ancient Chinese weapons. He later designed the Mek'leth (seen in DS9 and First Contact) and the larger Kur'leth. The Cardassians have a colour palette change before their next appearance. Their uniforms are redesigned to an angular grey armor-type uniform and their skin becomes grey as well.

Yeah the problem you are going to run into with just watching random episodes is that you are going to miss out on the backstory told in previous episodes that you skipped over. It happened with both episodes in this video. Worf's situation with the Klingons was it's own episode. O'Brien and Keeko's wedding happened (as the B plot) in another episode. I get you may not have time to watch every episode if you are trying to rush to the movies but IMHO the TV series is a better watch than the movie. Especially season 2 forward. Season 1 and 2 have some very skippable episodes but most of the latter season are solid most of the time. The movies have better FX but the stories are about on par with most episodes. If you make to the spin off shows skipping episodes becomes even more disjointed.
