Best thing that ever happened to me was being born in a lower middle class home. By that I mean we always had plenty to eat but since I was the youngest of 4 siblings I was used to wearing hand-me-downs with patches sewn in them by my mother. Cheap cat-head sneakers once a year. Beans & taters on the dinner table. Didn’t take but a second for us to get our asses out of bed & dressed cause the wood heater was in the living room and the bedrooms were cold enough to see your breath in the morning. Now, as a 51yr old man it don’t take much to make me content. I don’t need or want a 50K pickup truck. I still get my clothes from the second hand store. I don’t have to but I’m way past trying to impress anyone. Anyone who wants to be successful working for themselves better learn to be content and realize that the business has to come before their material desires. All it takes is one major health issue to wash it all away anyway. Enjoy the “now” because tomorrow isn’t promised to you.

Good trick with the grease on the lifters. I cut a piece of pvc pipe in half and stuck it in place of the cam then pounded short wood dowels with eye hooks into the lifter and tied string to it then pulled the lifter through the cam hole from the tappet cover lol all to avoid pulling the oil pan.

Just came across your site a few days ago enjoy it a lot I am 75 yrs old and still run a forwarder for a local logger here in Elgin OR Ran my own logging company for 23 yrs but could not find any work in 2003 so started running Timbco for Wood river timber out of Klamath Falls for a couple years then B & S logging out of Prineville until 2008 when i went to work for Gene Higley Logging here. Any way that is my background more or less. I am impressed with your attitude and work ethic. Yet you show your human side not afraid to admit mistakes and correct them. not many people would replace a part they broke but would just pass it off as no good. I especially like your Cat videos I have owned a Cat 20 a 30 and a 10k d6c. I still have the HD6 AC my brother and I started our company with in 1980. We used to run those FL70's and FL80's with B59's and C8.3's as expediters. They would go to about 500k before needing rebuilds, and the whole truck usually lasted 800k or so. Oil leaks were by fair the biggest issue with those engines, but they were simple and never failed to get the job done.

Man I remember that job. My 95 Dodge 2500 suffered the KDP and what a job it was. I read of a trick using hardwood dowels cut to length and peck them into the cam follower through the pushrod holes, then pull them up and use a rubber band around the two dowels in each cylinder to keep the followers up out of the way while pulling/replacing the cam. Think I ended up with like 900 in parts before I was done. The "updated" timing case had a two step bore where the dowel pins went to keep them in place. 300,000+ miles on it when I sold it. Saw your VW beetle outside your shop. I had 4 of them at one time recently. Sold 2 of them. You talk about problems. Sucks you had to put that much work into your new purchase but you will feel much more confident in the truck now because you have addressed all those issues. Good work.

The 5.9 Cummins has its devoted followers so aftermarket guys feed on that. Im a Mopar guy(Dodge/Plymouth) and the parts for them are 3 times that of a Chevy or Ford(Old Hemi cars go between $250,000-$1,000,000). We all have guilty pleasures, whether its hunting, fishing, motorcycles, ATV's, Side by Side's, dirt bikes, cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, etc. It keeps us occupied so we can remain sane. I'm a Heavy Equipment Tech. and I do none of that so it all went into the bank until it was time to rebuild my old workhorse-1996 Dodge 2500-Cummins, 5 speed When you work for yourself you have to devote 100% of all your resources into your company to survive in hoping to make it out on top.

The manufacturer goes to great means to design longevity and reliability into their engines and components when guys chip these trucks they are juicing them up so they go beyond what the engines were designed to do. Sure all the diesels will crank out HP but at what cost and if you want to play with diesels you better have deep pockets because the average guy ain’t wrenching on his own truck.

Then I remembered that you made a reference to being a former "bubble head" and I don't know if your work ethic was instilled by your father but it surely served you well in the service. Working and living below the waves is not the place to have someone doing half ass work. That kind of approach could have left you and the entire crew resting in some very deep water. And the really fun part of watching you work is the speed. Unless you run into a glitch, you repair stuff with very quickly. Thanks for the videos and the fussing and cussing that you do on occasion :-)

I made a shoe that fit over the cam gear so I could hold handle and slide in an out of maybe a hundred cams there was one that was either so hard that you cussed blue flames or maybe one that felt like the block was standing on the flywheel end and it went straight away. They are miserable. The way the pump works on case is there is no plug on the end of injection pump to time with and the only mark on the keyed gear goes in at about twenty degrees right of top. It is a little unnerving at first but there is a slot that lets pump rotate about a tooth worth. I time dead on and screw the getting extra degrees out of them cause I wrench and they engineer. One is solid lifters and the other is hydraulic, and clean is not good enough, spotless is. I use Rit Stuff when gluing and it works the best if things are clean but any contamination is well, just won't work at all!

@western truck and tractor repair Hey Warren, you would have to check the manual to verify it, but if this 5.9 is the same as the Dodge ones it would only one came bearing at the front of the block. The rest of the journals just ride in the bore in the block unless someone has a machine shop bore them out for bearings. Also don't forget the support brackets and such for the injection pump and compressor are all in and locktite, I believe that is the original cause for the cracked case if you found loose or missing bolts on them. The kdp normally pops out the case below the fan hub.
@morgansword
5 жыл бұрын
Just like taking a trip back in time for me. The lift pump on a case doesn't have the plug that you flip flop but it has a bolt that locks it from turning once it (the lift pump) is in time. I pull injectors when I put bearings in cause it turns over so much easier and the time while out is letting them soak in cleaner to get a little carbon off and light oil before installing. The lift pump off the dozer does have a keyed shaft and that is part of the timing but that is to get the degrees right. Those Chilton manuals are great till you need torque settings then they are not in order at all .. a long list of cuss words go here

huge hint when installing gear drives. mark the tip of the entire teeth. this allows the easy alignment when sliding them in. since the tips of the gears don't fully bottom out in the companion gears there is no chance of any issues with binding..

The 1995 powerstroke had a few problems, like cam timing sensor and valve cover electrical connectors, but all and all, if you keep dousing the fuel in the winter, it will last along time. The starters used to be weak and the bearings on the water pump too small, but I still own it.

I've owned diesel pickups since 1993 and never souped them up but I have changed parts with better ones to make it more reliable. Just as you have with the 6.0. These kids buy them with 300 thousand miles on them and start putting the bad bugger bugger stuff in them and just a little later their a pile of junk. Just run the ball sack off them. Mine don't get started unless there is a dollar figure attached to it. I'm looking right now for a 12 valve now for just a field truck, not so much for the road and won't even consider it if it has bigger injectors, timing bumped up, different than stock turbos. If it is you know it's had the piss run out of it and usually some kid that just got married or needs money for school. I've seen kids that have thousands of dollars in their trucks and live in mommy's house when they could have owned a hundred acre farm for what they got in that truck.

I'd consider cleaning that IP shaft and gear better. Keep your used rags in your pocket. Sucks to have your IP timing slip just because a little oil from your rag. Lots of harmonics going on between ignition events and injection events, both intersecting on that small contact area.

Am I missing info? I'm not on FB, so I'm scratching my head here- previous video, you just pulled the cam out, you were just going to get a new timing cover. Now- you're pressing the gear, NEW cam. What was wrong with the old cam? Holding lifters: Get a 1/2" wide, suitable length sheet steel, or even wood or plastic; Dollar Store rulers work fine. While there- get a pack enough Rare Earth magnets, crazy glue. Glue a magnet at each lifter location, onto your ruler/plate. Lay it over bores. Push all lifters up easy. Secure with your excellent Zip-tie idea. Don't waste expensive grease, and now you have a $10 tool you can reuse.

I spend quite enough money fixing broken stock shit. I gotta usually pay someone else to do the major work but I'm pretty handy with odd and end stuff. I don't have enough tools as I am not a mechanic

I'm wondering about that as well. You can see it in place in this video but I don't recall seeing the fix applied in one of Warren's earlier videos. I'm editing a video of mine where I'm doing a bunch of service to my friends 01.5 2500 with the 24V 5.9 which is not 100% sure to have the new timing case but turned out to have it. I was comparing the look of the new case in Warren's 12V with the case in this truck and casting looks the same. The KDP fix washer that I used isn't a washer. It's designed to go both as a flat oval washer set for the old case and the other way is designed to sit up on the end of the oval shape to clear the casting in the timing case where the dowel pin rests. If it sits high it should be the case which is necked down where the dowel pin goes and the pin should not be able to come out. I'm going to include side by side comparison photos of old and new case in the video I'm editing.

"Killer dowel pin". It's the one (and pretty much only) failing of the 12 valve Cummins. A dowel pin falls out, gets in the gears and breaks the front cover. The truck with 12 valve P pump Cummins and new welder was still a smoking buy.
