You’re quick on that backbar/plunge work. Honest question, do you experience more hinge pull on certain species if you just back cut and then chase it with a wedge? In other words, how do you decide when to bore cut? Thanks

It’s all in how much lien is in the tree if the tree is pretty much straight vertical then I will do a regular back cut but once it gets a lot of head lean I bore cut it

If you want it to roll left, you cut the right side of the hinge completely off. Getting it to roll right, cut the left side of the hinge completely off.

Great Vid's. But why cut high on the stump? To me looks like a lot of money left on the stump. I suppose walnut you want to get every inch but do other species change that idea?

I believe some of the stump look high on the one side because of the steep ground and if I remember correctly I left the one real high because of defect low in the butt, did it that way rather than chase the tree over the hill and butt it off after

I say "hard hat" because when I was real little my dad, both uncles, and several great uncles all cut timber together on the Oregon coast.......well being the little puss ant that I was always went clamoring through the crummy when they got back and always seemed to find a certain cassette tape I wanted to listen to unfit of women er children ears..........they'd always say "whoa there bubba, gimme that over here, that's hard hat music and needs to stay in the crummy.........." still 20 somethin years later don't know what the hell was on that tape haha

Pete can you explain why on the 1st tree you cut as a Humbolt, then on the 2nd you used the bore cut as they looked the same tree type?

barry hansen I used the same standard open face notch on both trees I just bore cut the second one because it had More head lean and had a greater chance of splitting open mid cut ( barber chair) I try to only bore cut when I have to as it takes a little more time
