Looking back now, I must have only been about 10 years old when my sister (already well into her teens) started playing this album on repeat..which makes me laugh as all the gut-wrenching themes of heart break and messed up relationships must have gone right over my head surely !?
But I very clearly remember it; it’s power, how it made me feel, and I think was fully aware of the visceral impact of the sheer energy and vocal brilliance of what I was hearing. Particularly on this back track 'You Oughta Know'.
The songs are as fresh as ever and you know you ve made a classic when generation after generation re-discover your music and feel like it's their own. There has even been a hit broadway musical in recent times with the same name using just the songs on this album!
As ever...how aware was Alanis Morissette of the fact she was mixing modes etc...probably not...no need to - this is pure instinctive talent with songs almost vomited up from the sou! But I still think it's interesting to analyse the chord progressions and try and work out why these songs can give us goosebumps and that all important 'frisson'!
I have been busy working on a new series called 'LEARN FROM THE MASTERS' which is OUT NOW on my Patreon site.
You can find a link to my patreon in my bio!
Thanks for watching! :)
