The Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives, otherwise known as the 4000's, get a a lot of notoriety. Of the 25 originally built in 1941 and 1944, 8 still remain, with one, #4014, currently in operation. These machines are truly impressive, not only for their massiveness, but for having some of the best technology available at the time on any steam locomotives built during WWII.
During the summer of 2023, I traveled with my son Carson and our good friend Chris to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where we took a close look at #4012, which had recently undergone a cosmetic restoration of over $1 million. This is our account of that detailed examination.
If you would like to see more of our trip to Steamtown, check out this video, where I go into more detail on how a steam locomotive works, utilizing the cutaway locomotive by J. David Conrad.
