WWI was a bloody and brutal conflict. Soldiers from all countries suffered horrendously in the mud and blood of the trenches. A soldier's life was full of: mud, barbed wire, artillery, lice, rats, the dead and the dreaded experience of, 'Going over the top.'
These experiences would surely have turned these men into savages...mere animals trying to survive in this man-made hell of earth.
But their letters home, amidst such unparalleled carnage tell a different story. These simple men, became eloquent, moving and chivalric in their letters home.
Letters such as this one, show men apologising for for leaving their loved ones struggling if they were to die.
Such humble men really do prove that despite the horrors of war, humanity will always shine through.
Here at HISTORY WORKSHOPS, we love making videos on all things HISTORY. Especially on: Elizabeth I, the Spanish Armada, the English Civil Wars, the Monmouth Rebellion and the First World War.
