Another great video, absolutely loving your content atm captain!

These have been really helpful, I would be fascinated to see a series on weapons and DPS next. A scientific approach in that area might help clear up some of the head-scratching numbers in the encyclopedia.

Great job on making a truly scientific analysis. This is your most rigorous experiment so far, great stuff 👌

One thing I would love to see you do is a overview of VRO, I love using it but can’t find a good tutorial for anything relating to it, might be a good idea

I unfortunately know nothing about VRO. If I ever install it, I'll probably do some research on it.

Cost/benefit only really matters to me early game when workload is low and funds limited. Once you have your economy rolling, workload is high and funds immense, so not trawling through the log of destroyed ships to set replacements is more important than spending a few more credits on quality ships.

I'd've said losses would have been 2-3% for travel engines, but it may be that I have a lot of travel (but no xenon: already killed off). So the losses being 1/3 to 3/4 of a percent is a surprise. At 2-3% it will be often enough to make it a drag. That is why I would have removed the 3s delay, because to balance the higher travel speed it is more expensive and it accelerates to max speed slower, and therefore reaches the same speed as All Round engines travel at later than they manage, but are able to go just a bit faster. Since Travel is for non-combat use, it is fair enough. You'd fit AR if it is tight for money or if you aren't as concerned about either travel or cruise speed but can't lose either as badly as the specialised versions.

Lines up with my expectations pretty much. I've used both Demeters and Boas for a while now and they've both worked great, and I don't reckon I'll be switching from travel engines for a sub-1% difference in survival rate per hour. Late into my game though and I'm surprised at your guys' ability to escape Kha'ak, even with Lasertowers. My M miners still get melted by them as they start to attack in swarms -- maybe a longer simulation would be required to manifest that outcome.

I got a couple of decent Kha’ak swarms, but mostly just groups of 2-4. The really big swarms would be a problem, since flak + towers can't drive them all back at once. Theoretically, by the time you've reached that point in the game, you have the option to use L miners or add some defenses for your M miners.

@@CptSnuggles07 Right, so the Kha'ak findings don't specifically challenge the community wisdom of switching to Ls eventually. Good to know; thanks.

I go with survivability vs profitability because my corporation rescues all its employees. It’s the least I can do since no one actually gets a regular salary.

haha, I do that too. I thought I was the only one. I do it to keep the experienced crew though, no altruistic motives here.

Thank you for these. I tend to be protective of the ships, due to the accumulated skill levels of pilots and crews. My game is modded, but my main medium trader in current save file is a Hermes with Arg Trv mk2 engine, in Terran and Pioneer space. I'm still experimenting with medium traders in the commonwealth areas. The Scale Plate have been exceptionally annoying. The Fallen Families were even in Sacred Relic. I'll probably just use large traders in those areas, or add escorts. Expensive.

Scale plate pact minotaurs are extremely annoying. You need destroyers to relyably killthem without losses, and dedicated corvettes for escort duty is already cost prohibitive by the midgame.

@@egoalter1276 If not for game performance, I'm tempted to just build a road of laser towers between all the stations. I can't even imagine hot much my PC would explode.

Were there differences between the miners and the traders?
@CptSnuggles07
17 күн бұрын
The miners never had to deal with pirates, just Kha'ak and the occasional Xenon, so overall they had higher survivability than the traders. They did tend to burn through laser towers faster when the Kha'ak were especially active, but they still never deployed more than 25% of their towers in any given run. Also, miners have a split focus between normal cruising speed and travel speed, which makes All-Round and Combat engines more competitive on them, although Travel is still technically the most profitable any time they're traveling multiple jumps to reach their mining locations.

I would like to see a test of the effects of service crew on a ship. like, should I use crew on my warship? Would just marines be better? If not, what percentage of crew vs marine would be optimal?
@CptSnuggles07

See the other two Propulsion Lab videos, along with my "Understanding the AI" guide. tl;dw you always want your capital ships to be completely filled with service crew unless you absolutely need to have marines on board. It's a good idea for M ships too. Marines and empty crew slots both count as zeroes for the purposes of determining average crew skill, and average crew skill is very important for larger ships.
