This video documents the testing a prototype launch 'Dolly' for the 7 foot span Skywalker X8 flying wing (A Dolly is a type of detachable undercarriage for aircraft to take off from).
The aeroplane was designed to be hand launched, however this presents a credible risk of injury to the operator through propeller strike to the head or hand, especially when wearing head mounted FPV equipment. A number of X8 pilots are now using catapult systems to mitigate this risk. I decided to design and build a Dolly instead, as it's less bulky than a catapult.
It took three successive iterations to the design of the Dolly, and it's interface to the aeroplane to get it launching reliably and consistently.
These tests were conducted at the South Beds Model Flying Club between July and November 2013, and were expertly captured on film by Olivia Finucane.
